The playwright Thornton Wilder once imagined that life in God’s care is like a beautiful tapestry. When viewed from the pattern side, the “correct” side, the tapestry has an intricate and magnificent design. The problem is that in our everyday lives, we cannot see the pattern. We live our lives on the reverse side of the tapestry, so what we see is only broken threads and knots. Only here and there, in worship and in moments of insight, do we glimpse what we will ultimately see in the full light; the great design of God’s tapestry, the full plot of God’s story. Part of my responsibilities as an ordained servant of God is to discern the tapestry among us. It is an article of faith for me that God is up to beautiful work in this, His congregation. It is a work of such size, significance and scale that we must, of necessity, step back from it upon a watch tower to behold its full greatness. I invite you to consider this edition of Heart Matters as that watch tower – a printed place of perspective where you can once again see and appreciate the tapestry of grace in which you are invested. From this vantage point, you and I can be thrilled by a renewed vision of what God is doing through the time, talent, and treasure that you provide: You will see a church where we are at our best when we look to Jesus and look like Jesus. You will see a community of faith that God has been especially blessed with the spiritual gift of mercy. You will see a gathered people of God for whom God still has great plans.

And you will see the amazing things that happen whenever you give financially to this church. The stories and statistics in this edition of Heart Matters are more than data – each is evidence and inspiration of how your regular financial giving is making an eternal faith difference. Your weekly giv-ing is the raw material out of which God is creating something beautiful and breath-taking in our time. Author Stephen Dunn reported the reaction of two agnostic parents struggling with whether to send their little girl to the local Vacation Bible School. They said, “Soon it became clear to us: you can’t teach disbelief to a child, only wonderful stories, and we didn’t have a story nearly as good. Evolution is devoid of heroes. You can’t say to your child, ‘Evolution loves you.’ The story stinks of extinction and nothing excit-ing happens for centuries. I didn’t have a wonderful story for my child.” Friends, University United Methodist Church has a great story to tell and great opportunities to tell it. Working together, our investments create a narrative of great good and a tapestry of great grace. So take to the watch tower, and be blessed by what God says and how God will answer. Blessings, Charles Anderson

Like other developing countries, Senegal has a high infant and child mortality rate and many of the people suffer from diseases and illnesses that could easily be treated if there were clinics and medica-tions available to them. But our presence and our assistance is about more than physical healing, it’s about love and hope. To this end, we have partnered with the United Methodist Church’s Global Ministries’ Mission Initiative already at work in Senegal, specifically with Mbour United Methodist Church. Mbour, a major city, has one of 19 Methodist churches in Senegal. Our partnership strengthens the Church in its efforts to share the gospel and to support its many community outreach programs: such as feeding, micro-finance programs, sewing school and hygiene education, and especially to meet health care needs.

University UMC has sponsored two previous medical mission trips to Senegal with another scheduled for this winter. The first mission trip in April of 2011, had ten team members including myself and my husband, and held four clinics, one in the base city and three in differ-ent villages. Over 950 patients were seen and 500 pounds of medication were distributed. The second mission trip in April of 2012 had twelve team members. All came for the first time except for myself and my husband and including the wonderful addition of French speaking Pastor Leslie Tomlinson. We saw similar miraculous successes with over 1050 patients seen and 750 pounds of medication given for the relief of pain and diseases. Senegal bears witness to University’s long devo-tion to “holy tenderness.” God turns your financial sharing into healed hearts and touched lives.

God has especially blessed University with the spiritual gift of mercy.

Our mission took us to Muziti, a village in Zimbabwe. There were many needs, but the primary one was to have clean, reliable water. Then the water needed to be distributed into the mission compound-into teachers’ residences, the school, and the church. That way, teachers would make their homes at the mission instead of in a nearby town. While we were there Phase I, the water well and its generator, was dedicated by the Bishop of the Zimbabwe East Conference. We now have funds for Phase II, the 15,000-liter tank. Phase II construction begins soon and the people of Muziti are building their water system! The outcome is far more than a water system. The outcome is the infusion of Christian hope from an unexpected place on a foreign continent. Our presence in their midst, our modest service, our concern for their situation, and our shared friendship all give them renewed hope. They have been blessed, but our team has been too. We have seen God at work, in a village we never expected to visit, in a part of the world we didn’t know. We got to join God in his work. We’ve been ministered to by his people in Muziti, now our friends. Their selfless hospitality and their immense Christian faith has changed us. The mission trip to Zimbabwe is testimony of the profound impact University has in lives when we seek to show Jesus. Your weekly financial giving makes a daily faith difference. Working together, our investments create a narrative of great good and a tapestry of great grace.

Camp Ability Meet Hayden, he is part of our u|ability children’s program. Hayden has Fragile X Syndrome, which is the leading known genetic cause of Autism. Hayden attended University UMC’s Camp Ability this past March. For the first time in his life, Hayden was able to sing worship songs using hand motions and dance moves with his friends, his parents were so proud of him! We are honored that University UMC fosters an environment where everyone of every age and ability can freely worship Jesus and have their lives transformed in the process. Hayden’s parents, Mike and Tina Makris founded a Fragile X Support Group which they lead here at the church the second Saturday of each month. This illustrates God’s habit of turning dollars and cents into miracles and ministry. Your contributions help toward the next “amazing grace” God has in store for us.

Great things happen when you give to this church: From Easter to Pentecost we preached and encouraged a response for second mile giving in our 50 Days of Hope effort. The results have been a blessing. 414 of our families made gifts that totaled $488,738. 29% of those gifts were designated and those designations have been properly applied. The success of 50 Days enabled the Administrative Board to set a revised budget to support the ministry needs for 2012.

This June the Uprising Student Ministry took 44 students and parents to Costa Rica to serve. Over the course of several days a floor was laid in a local Methodist church, a Sunday school classroom was transformed and made more usable at a Pentecostal church, a home was built for a family in need, and children were shown Christ’s love and fed a meal that they would not have eaten otherwise. Our students looked to Jesus in order to look like Jesus to the people of Costa Rica.

Amazing things happen when you give to this church.
