Heart Burn in Pregnancy What Causes it? Change in angle of gastro-esophageal sphincter (flap in throat) and increase in intra-gastric pressure due to uterus (pressure on abdominal organs) Uterus displaces stomach upward, rotates stomach. Delayed gastric emptying-or the food stays in the tummy longer High levels of progesterone, relaxin, estrogen (pregnancy hormones) – decreases resting pressure of the flap/valve in your throat that keeps food down and acid out Intensifies with advancing gestation, ends after delivery What Can I do? 4 almonds chewed very thoroughly in mouth Dried papaya chips Yogurt or soy milk Wear loose fitting clothing Peppermint tea/Ginger ale or boiled cube of ginger in water for ½ hour Try to avoid foods that trigger your heartburn-may be different for every women Elevate head of bed 5 inches Stop or try to decrease smoking Sleeping in left lateral Avoid reclining 2-3 hours post-eating try to sit or stand Do not eat right before bed Don’t drink and eat together Eat smaller more frequently and eat slowly Try to have a stress free mealtime Antacids – may provide relief but long-term use can impair iron absorption. Avoid antacids that contain aluminum Tums, calcium carbonates may cause rebound heartburn If all else fails consider H2 Blockers-or Zantac
