Hannah is an Ozarks native and is currently attending Missouri State University earning her degree as a Technical and Professional Writing Major. She hopes to focus her career pursuits in grant writing for nonprofit organizations and freelance writing.

Growing up in the Ozarks, she has a “natural” affinity for hiking, floating and camping. She also enjoys reading essays with a cup of tea in her spare time. She has a friendly 7-year-old German Shepherd/Collie mix and a 4-year-old Cocker Spaniel; the former shares her love of camping while the latter would prefer to cuddle up next to her during essay and tea time.

Hannah says, “I found a home at RMH as a result of my passion for nonprofit organizations combined with a discovery that the workplace has the potential to be a source of enjoyment. A close friend loved her position at RMH and had recommended that I look into work opportunities here. The very home-like feeling of the House, working with some amazing volunteers, and meeting some exceedingly strong families have been my favorite parts of being at the Ronald McDonald House. I look forward to more time spent here”.

Ashton Canfield became involved with Ronald McDonald House “sort of as a chain reaction,” he says. Ashton’s mother and current Assistant Manager at the House near Cox South, Jacinda Canfield, was the first to volunteer, followed by Ashton’s older brother, Philip. “Then I started. Hopefully my dad will start volunteering soon too!”When asked why he continues to volunteer with RMHC, Ashton says, “The joy of seeing families’ happy faces. Also, it’s a good way to give back to the community.” Giving back is something Ashton is already very good at, as he organized a school-wide pop tab donation throughout Price Elementary School, which you may have seen in the September issue, and he is now organizing the drive at Republic Middle School. We’re happy to have Ashton’s smiling face and helping hands around the House every week!

Gracie Anderson’s BirthdayA “Happy 10th Birthday” to Gracie Anderson was a happy celebration for the Ronald McDonald House as well! This sweet little girl rang in double-digits by giving back. And who better to celebrate with than your friends? Instead of receiving birthday presents this year, Gracie asked her friends and family to give her money so it could be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. We graciously accepted her kind donation of $200.00. Happy Birthday, Gracie! Another year older, and another year wiser indeed!

Charlie Iglio, along with the Knights of Columbus, Ozark 10-200, provides meals at the House near Cox every 3rd Monday of the month and for special occasions at both Ronald McDonald Houses. They love sharing their talents in this special way and have many connections with RMHC! Learn more about Knights of Columbus and their involvement in our Family Dinner Program.

When did you start providing meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House? We started providing meals about 8 years ago.

How did you hear about/get involved with the Family Dinner Program?Anthony Saitta, a former volunteer; Bill & Nancy Duplisse, and Louis Morralas

What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program?Meeting and talking to different families; seeing the families enjoy a good meal and relaxing; and taking the pressure off of the families by trying to make them feel at home with a good home-cooked meal.

Do you have any favorite memories? The meal we provided at Christmas was very special.

We had a group of musicians and singers who sang Christmas songs and the families joined in with the group. It was a joyful moment for everyone.

We are also honored to be the first group to cook dinner for families and children at the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital on November 30, 2012!

Linda Shamel with Faith Baptist Church provides meals at the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital every 2nd Sunday of the month.

When did you start providing meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House? The group started providing meals in March 2013.

How did you hear about/get involved with the Family Dinner Program? The Coyne Family, who attend Faith Baptist Church, had a son born at 32 weeks. During Gabriel’s hospitalization, the family stayed at the House near Cox South and realized the importance of the Family Dinner Program. The Coyne family are now members of the group from

Faith Baptist Church that provide a monthly dinner at the House.

Do you have a favorite memory of volunteering with the Family Dinner Program? We really enjoyed getting to meet the families and know that even if just for a night, we could help.

What has been your favorite meal to prepare?Chinese! We try to keep a theme for every dinner.

Do you have any suggestions for other groups who want to volunteer with the Family Dinner Program? We suggest bringing home-cooked meals and trying not to bring the same thing every time. Also, we believe it would truly be a blessing for groups to commit to serving once or twice a month. It has created so many memories for us!

Tooth TalkHeart of the Truck Volunteering

on the Tooth TruckBy: Clayton SchwinkeThis month we would like to share what volunteering on the Tooth Truck has meant to one of our awesome volunteers, Clayton Schwinke. His experience educating our young patients is helping to prepare him for his future career in dentistry!

I started my experience with the program in the beginning of 2013 and I absolutely love volunteering for the Tooth Truck. I have found that it is not like most volunteering experiences because I can see an immediate impact the Tooth Truck is having on local elementary school children here in Springfield. I am currently a junior at Missouri State University and interested in a career in dentistry. Being a volunteer with the Tooth Truck, I am able to see a side of dentistry that most students do not have the opportunity to see; providing children access to free and complete dental care. From start to finish, the children’s treatment is totally free to families who really need it.

I have the chance to talk and interact with most of the kids that come onto the Tooth Truck and I can see how much of a difference a nice, healthy smile can have on a kid’s life. Another thing that makes the Tooth Truck such an awesome place to volunteer is the entire staff. Dr. Sarah (our full-time dentist) has always done an amazing job with all the kids that come on board. She does a great job answering any questions

I have about dentistry. Kim, Kristi, and Megan (our Dental Assistants) have always made being on the Truck fun. Abby and Mindy help run everything that goes on daily and behind the scenes of the Tooth Truck and I am so grateful to be a part of the Tooth Truck family.

Clayton prepares to walk a Tooth Truck patient back to class after completing a successful dental appointment.

Small changes you make to your everyday routine can make a big difference. Change things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, packing a lunch instead of buying, adding 10 minutes of cardio to your day, walking during your lunch, or doing abdominal exercises while watching TV. Small changes are easy to do and soon they’ll become something you won’t even have to think about.

Klaytin was a star patient on the Tooth Truck! He visited the Tooth Truck multiple times in order to complete all of his dental treatment needs! Dental Assistants Megan Lambert, Kim Otradovec, and Dr. Sarah gather to celebrate his final appointment.”

Our Tooth Truck patient Chris was extremely excited about getting his teeth cleaned! At one point, he placed his patient napkin on top of his head and gave us a thumbs-up! He is a fun and silly kindergartener that had the staff laughing throughout his appointment!”

Welcome New Volunteer, Gina! The Tooth Truck welcomed Gina Wyland to its volunteer program in September. She is passionate about dentistry and working hard in her final year at MSU as she prepares for dental school. As the oldest of five kids in her family, Gina has a natural ability for connecting with children and putting them at ease. Her smile will light up the Tooth Truck every Tuesday afternoon. Presley’s Country Jubilee Onstage in Fantastic CavernsBranson’s First Family of Entertainment, the Presley’s, will return to a venue where they performed half a century ago when they present “Presley’s Country Jubilee Onstage in Fantastic Caverns.” The show will be held on November 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Fantastic Caverns’ Auditorium Room, a natural underground theater that over the years has hosted events ranging from country music shows to live opera and symphony performances. One-hundred percent of the ticket price will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children age 2-12 and can be purchased at www.presleys.com or by calling 800-335-4874. The event will be televised on the national cable/satellite networks RFD-TV and Family Net.

The show will be a signature Presleys’ evening of family fun with a blend of country, gospel and bluegrass music and comedy with a talented cast of 18 entertainers, seven of whom are members of the Presley family. “It also will be a kind of homecoming,” said Gary Presley, better known to Presley’s audiences as the comedian Herkimer. He performed with his family at Fantastic Caverns in the 1960s. He also worked as a cave guide when he was 16. “Fantastic Caverns holds a lot of memories,” he said.

Presley’s Country Jubilee has been a mainstay on Branson’s 76 Country Music Boulevard since before the road was even called that. The Presleys opened their theater – billed as the first show on the Branson Strip – in

1967. Before that, the Presleys played for audiences at Fantastic Caverns. With family patriarch Lloyd Presley, they performed regularly at the cave from 1962 to 1966 on a radio program called “Farmarama.”

This will not be the first fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House at Fantastic Caverns. In fact, the cave hosted an event called “Ronald McDonald’s Enchanted Caverns,” a fundraiser with a Halloween theme in 1987 before

our first House opened in 1988. We are thrilled Fantastic Caverns and Presley’s Country Jubilee are partnering for this fun family event!

We hope you’ll consider volunteering as an usher or helping with hospitality and concessions. Contact Laura Haney at 417-875-3501 or [email protected] for more information.
