THIS DAY IN HISTORY

The first documentary about electronic music was released in Beijing.

DJ wengwet talking about indie club scene

Shen Lihui- The founder of modern sky

In the Spring of 2012. The first documentary about electronic music in China, “Walking By Dreams: Electronic Music in China”, was released in Beijing.

The director Zhang Yixing, a famed documentary director who made films like “20 Years of China’s Rock and Roll”, is keen on the music culture of the current youth. Electronic music has been a niche genre in China. The film describes the persistence of electronic music artists who dedicate their lives to their work . The documentary features interviews with music industry professionals such as Shen Lihui- the founder of modern sky music label, and scholar Zhang Youdai. Artists like DJ DIO, Weng Weng, Mikey_Zhang, ELVIS_T, Sun Dawei, and pet conspiracy make an appearance in the film. As the first documentary that focuses on the electronic music genre in China, “Walking by Dreams” recounted the development of electronic music from the reform and opening-up of China in the 1980s till now.

The future of electronic music in China is ambiguous. With the development of the cultural scene and the ever-advancing acceptance for diversity in the Chinese society, niche music markets are currently gaining more and more attention and momentum. Showing the perseverance of electronic artists in China, The film posited a hopeful perspective on the future.

天空创始人沈黎晖;音乐学者张有待;

Something surprising was happening on “Sing My Songs” this year. In general, people always feel that all grass-root talent shows in this country magnify talents’ personal traumas to gain attention. But this time around, for “Sing My Song”, CCTV seemed to be really trying to give the Chinese original music scene for a change.

The band Hang Gai won the show. Native to Inner Mongolia, the band was among the firsts from China to ever perform music that combined Chinese music and Western Rock on a global level. The guest performers included folk musician Zhao Muyang, who used to be the drummer of the famous Chinese bands, “Overload” and “No.43 Baojia Street”. Xu Jun, one of the talents being showcased on the show, was the winner of the Converse “New Noise” Music competition in 2013.

Switching the focus from tear-jerking stories to the actual music-making process of quality underground musicians, the show successfully presented the audience with more original music from grass-root efforts. It also opened doors for many independent musicians, giving them the opportunity to perform to a wider audience. Ultimately, good music should be heard by more people.

Famouse “Little Apple”

WHAT’S NOT今非昔比

The consistent popularity of “Little Apple” made some people think that as long as a brainwashing rhythm and some exaggerated dance moves are present, just any song could become a chart-topper.

Following the moduled, artist Wang Rong presented her latest hit ”Chick Chick”. The lyrics to the song are completely devoid of any real meaning. The whole song contained only continuous vocal imitations of noises chickens make, accompanied by an exaggerated and vulgar music video.

Nothing much sensible could be said about the track. A fan comment online reads “ Even the dancing aunts on the square won’t like a song like ‘Chick Chick’.”

Hailing from Queens, New York, Miss Ko (Ge Zhong Shan) gave up pursuing her MBA from NYU to become a professional Hip-hop artist.

This second album of hers showcases more personality of Miss Ko than the her first. Although the songs were mostly performed in Chinese, it made fruitful attempts in achieving a spirit of and an attitude towards the original Hip-hop genre. Her strong vocal performance and outstanding lyrics are the highlights of XXXIII

In an interviews, Miss Ko said: “Though my Mandarin isn’t that good, I insist on writing lyrics with Mandarin”. Writing in Chinese gave Miss Ko a broad audience reach in this market, making her the most famous female rapper in the Greater China area.

Idols》

Fifi

Rong,17

Fifi Rong -What is the “PHD of Dubstep” doing?

The Chinese audience first got to know Fifi Rong when she collaborated with the well-respected trip-hop artist Tricky on his album “False Idols” in 2013.

The singer and music producer is a Beijing native. She travelled to England for her studies at age 17, and went on to receive a bachelor degree of Economic and Social Music followed by a master’s degree in Media Management. Later on, she famously went on further studies and gained a PHD in Dubstep at the King’s College in London.

Most Chinese audience recognizes her as the girl with a PHD in Dubstep. However, nobody really knows what that means.

“My music has no boundaries. With the process of globalization and the ubiquity of the Internet, we can no longer find a purely unified criterion on anything. My music is the true fusion of everything. Classical, Folk, Electronic, Pop, Dub, Rock, Hip-hop, Blues and many other local genres from England, I’m interested in all of them. My music is just like the diverse metropolis we all live in now.”

Boundless in its imagination and refuses to be defined by any category, her music only answers to her own inspiration. Perhaps, we are witnessing the future of music through Fifi Rong, or at least in her attitude towards genre-less music making and beliefs.
