These non-native species are encountered daily and form a familiar part of our urban landscapes, growing successfully in parks, gardens, along roadsides, and in other open spaces. This guide features nearly 600 of the most common and familiar of these and, using the same model of identi� cation as Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa, facilitates ID based on leaf and stem attributes. The book provides the country of origin for each species and o� ers key information on cultivation and

In dié drama val die fokus op die gebroke verhouding tussen ’n pa en sy rebelse tienerseun. Die tema van ‘n gebroke verhouding met dié van die Grensoorlog word hiermee gekombineer. Droomtonele is geskep en oorbrug die gaping, selfs al het die oorlog feitlik dertig jaar gelede plaasgevind. Die rolprent speel in 2003 af en die 19-jarige Dap Smit en sy pa, Dawid, ’n veteraan van die Grensoorlog, stamp voortdurend koppe. Die mans stem oor niks saam nie en daar is klaarblyklik geen hoop op versoening tussen hulle nie. Soos dikwels in sulke huise word die vrou en ma, Carina in die middel van hul epiese worsteling vasgevang en worstel sy om die vrede te probeer bewaar en nie kant te kies nie. Dan kry Dap ’n reeks drome waarin hy ’n gevegsoldaat tydens die Grensoorlog in die 1980’s is. Daar ontmoet hy sy pa op sy ouderdom, en hierdie drome verander Dap se persepsie – en lewe – heeltemal. Daar is nie omdraaikans nie. Maar hoe lyk die pad vorentoe? Die fliek sal aanklank vind by ‘n wye gehoor, maar ook by elkeen wat deur die oorlog geraak is; die soldate, hul vroue en meisies, mans, kinders en ouers. Dit roep herinneringe op, help om spoke te verdryf en hopelik om kykers met meer begrip vir die gevolge van oorlog te gee – selfs diegene wat niks met die oorlog te doen gehad het nie. Die rolverdeling sluit weereens groot name in – Stian Bam, Erica Wessels en Edwin van der Walt vertolk die drie hoofrolle. Last year Helouise was a semi-� nalist in the Mrs South Africa pageant, and as a student she also competed in and won a few titles. “I was very shy when I was younger and winning a title at varsity was good for my self-esteem. Just because you train and work in � tness doesn’t mean you need to look like a slob. It is important to look after yourself, be well groomed and yes, you may wear lipstick in the gym!” she says laughing.

She admits that she was very disappointed when she didn’t make it to the � nals of the Mrs SA pageant, but looking back, she has gained other insights. “A competition like Mrs SA forces you to do a lot of soul searching. You need to dig deep into your inner self and realise that appearance is but a drop in the ocean. I have grown a lot over the past year and know now that sometimes the destination is not where we think it should be, and sometimes it is for the best.”

Helouise doubts whether she would enter another pageant in future. “I think it is a phase of my life that is over. It is very time consuming and where I am now in my life and career, time is precious. I would rather spend that time with my two boys.”

She has quite a few plans still to unpack from her gym bag. “I have just opened a new CrossFit branch on the other side of the dam and an obstacle course is being built there where we

Is daar nog iets wat hy wil bereik? Hy dink ‘n ruk. “Ek wil nie in ‘n kabelkarretjie ry nie, ook nie op ‘n vleigtuig of boot nie. Ek is gelukkig hier op die plaas saam met my vrou, kinders, kleinkinders en my span werkers wat soos ‘n uitgebreide familie is.”

Sy oë blink as hy van sy vier kleinkinders praat. En hy staan dadelik op om die driejarige Nathan uit sy middagslapie te gaan haal vir ‘n foto. Nathan se spesiale gholfstokke word uitgehaal en die klein knapie wys hoe hy ‘n barshou kan slaan. “Hy is ‘n natural. Ons gaan nog lekker saam speel.”

Kallie is deesdae ook ’n kranige gholfspeler met ’n vier-voorgee.

“Ek was al ‘n een-voorgee. Ek speel net so goed soos Tiger Woods, net nie so gereeld nie. Ek kom net vier keer ’n week op die gholfbaan uit!”

Is gholf nie te rustig vir ‘n voormalige bokser nie? “Nee! Gholf is ‘n vreeslike uitdaging. Boks is baie makliker. Gholf is ‘n sport waar jy nie sommer die geveg wen nie. Ek wil hom ook nie wen nie. Al wedstryd wat ek moet wen is met myself, om te besef wanneer ek nie meer kan nie en vrede daarmee maak.”

Al die kinders en kleinkinders speel saam gholf. “Dit is baie lekker. Enigiets solank hulle net nie boks nie. My hart sal dit nie hou nie,” sê hy.

Kallie was by een boksgeveg van Nichol. “Ek was amper dood. My hart wou gaan staan. Gelukkig het hy boks opgegee.”

Hy sê dit is aan Elize te danke dat hy gholf speel. “Sy het geweet ek sou iets moes doen toe ek ophou boks, en toe koop sy vir my gholfstokke. Ek sê mos sy weet beter as ek wat is goed vir my. Ek luister nou na haar. My vrou, my Here en

Margaret Rose and Angus Manson, with their baby girl Tara and toddler Kai, live an extraordinary life in harmony

with nature on their farm and retreat, called The Garden, in Magaliesburg. The name says it all. It is a place of beauty and tranquillity where one forgets about the outside world and lives as one with nature.

This retreat has been the couple’s dream for the past six years and now they can finally share the gift with others.

Margaret, formerly a management consultant in London and Africa, and Angus, a landscaper by profession, were travelling in India in 2010 when the idea of a retreat got hold of them. “We were disillusioned with development politics and bureaucracy and the idea of a spa cum retreat surfaced. Our first business plan was developed in a small café in Varanasi,” laughs Margaret.

“On our return we resigned from our jobs, bought a Kombi and started searching for land in Magaliesburg that was beautiful and with a tranquil feel that will help our guests unwind and forget the stresses of the city - for a few hours at least. Estate agents told us our expectations were crazy for our

budget, but we found the perfect spot immediately,” she says.

“We started with a completely undeveloped plot. We had to set up basic infrastructure like fencing, pathways/roads, solar energy and running water, as well as a place for us to live while we were getting things up and running.”

The couple initially lived in their Kombi and then moved into an old shipping container … “which we have modified as we have gone along, almost entirely with second-hand materials. As the months went by, the development of our ‘eco-house’ became a living experiment in understanding how much we really need to be happy,

what comforts we require, and which we can equally happily live without,” she says.

“From the start, developing The Garden has been an act of service. We developed the retreat lovingly and slowly – it has taken five years – in line with one of our core principles to build it without debt – in order to maintain the freedom to make choices rather than having to pay back the bank. We have simplified our own life, and it is an ongoing process.”

And now finally the couple can share their retreat and haven with others. The Garden offers a breakaway from all things stressful. Nestled in the lovely Magaliesburg valley, The Garden has everything - a river that runs through it, peaceful meditation gardens, a labyrinth, an open air yoga area and a Tea House where one finds food for the body as well.

The simple menu consists of tasty, healthy, vegan dishes, with produce from their own garden and local farms. Creamy chickpea and spinach curry;

Mung bean and coconut casserole; sweet potato and red lentil dahl; roasted vegetables with millet and homemade coriander pesto… are only a few of the deliciously good for you dishes.

“We are also very proud of our special teas, including those grown on our own property – fresh mint, fresh lavender, fresh lemongrass, Egyptian chamomile, ginger and honey, cinnamon and clove, tulsi, green teas and many more. No coffee,” she laughs.

People are surprised to find there are no prices on the menu. “We have elected instead to serve lunch to our guests and make our retreat facilities available based on the time-honoured practice of ‘dana’. Dana is a Pali word meaning

generosity and an ancient practice in Indian, and especially Buddhist traditions. In return our guests can make donations. Giving breeds giving, we believe.”

“A long-held dream of ours has been to build a permanent community

here at The Garden, where we can live sustainably, in harmony with nature, sharing spiritual practice, food, hard work and special moments – while still maintaining everybody’s private, personal space. Our vision is a small community of families, long-stay and short-stay guests and volunteers, with off-grid eco-houses, growing our own food, contributing to the development of The Garden and engaging in community outreach projects. We are beginning to move forward with plans,” she says.

“It now finally feels like the safe space we have envisioned. A place where people are able to share with each other, and to connect with other like-minded individuals. We haven’t always managed to do all this joyfully! But we are now in a position to offer The Garden as our gift, with donations covering costs and going back into further developing The Garden and The Garden Community.”

Sunny days and gathering around the braai is as proudly South African as the Royal family is to Great Britain. There is, however, a certain skill behind perfecting the art of cooking over an open � ame. With these easy steps, you too can braai like a boss.

1 Buy only the best meat If you want to braai like a boss you have to be equally fussy about what

you allow on your grill. Quality in this instance more is important than quantity – especially when it comes to grilling the perfect juicy steak. Thicker cut sirloin, rib-eye or rump is top choice. These cuts have a good fat content, which keeps it moist during cooking and guarantees superior � avour. Let your meat sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before you put it on the grill.

2 Tools are key to success A good set of tongs and a braai with a stainless steel, height

Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface.5. Add the filling onto half of the pastry, leaving the edges open.6. Ross Barret has recently been appointed as Principal of Pecanwood College: High School. He regards this job as a challenge that came along his path when he least expected it, but is extremely excited about this

next chapter of his journey.

Ross Barrett, is a passionate educator. Asked if he would choose the same career again, were he to have the choice, his

answer is unequivocal: “Definitely!”In this way, Ross is impeccably

suited for his job. His parents and grandparents, the perfect role-models, groomed him from an early age to carry on in the business of people.

Ross says that he realised, around the age of 15 that his true passion lay in wanting to learn more. He knew that there was no other field better suited than education.

Ross has been in education for the past 24 years. Within that time he served as a Boarder Housemaster for 7 years and a further 12 years within senior management at St Alban’s College in Pretoria.

He is known for his experience and depth of character that ensures excellence of holistic education for his

students. He firmly believes that schools need to be extensions of their communities, and that an environment needs to be created where all role players combine to create a school that has a holistic approach in education. It is said that staff, parents and the community will benefit from his authentic, honest and candid view on professional relationships. He has a genuine interest in his students, and is always wanting the best for them at all times, in order for them to reach their potential.

As a Mathematics teacher, Ross excels in the classroom. His continuous drive for academic excellence will most certainly benefit the already strong academic programme at Pecanwood College: High School. He says that he is looking forward

to incorporating new technologies in the classroom, but ultimately he is most excited about getting to know his new students, parents and staff.

Ross graduated from the University of Pretoria and completed the Leadership Development Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand. He combines expertise with passion, and looks forward to developing and growing the school by adding value to the dynamic environment.

He moved into the community, and will be living at the West Lake Estate, with his beautiful wife Tracy. Although his children are grown up, the family of four are very excited to be part of the Hartbeespoort community. His charming daughter, Simone (25 years old) is currently working as a physiotherapist in Ballito, while his son Kian (23 years old) is in his fifth year of medicine at the University of Pretoria and busy with his practical blocks.

Ross’s interests also stretches further than just education. He has a passion for both the cultural and sporting fields as well. He enjoys playing squash, swimming, cycling and hockey, as well as the outdoors with an occasional hike and camping expedition. Ross was fortunate enough to climb some of the world’s most picturesque mountains, including Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya and Base camp of Everest, which he says he hopes to do again in the not too distant future.

Ross also has a musical ability. He has played many instruments, including the piano, French horn, but his favourite is the saxophone. He believes that music is universal as he believes that it speaks to everyone and there is no expiration date. Communities come together when there is a bit of harmony.

When asked what advice he would like to give the Pecanwood College Community, he said that it would be the words of Corinthians 13. This chapter does not only speak about love, but how we as human beings should treat each other with kindness, dignity and respect. Qualities he strives to live by, day to day.

Ross says: “I am immensely proud to be at the helm of such a great school and I am certainly looking forward to working with the staff in the next chapter of the school’s history. colourful, the unusual flowers make for an interesting show. Carrots have delightful

lace umbels for months.

The radish plant has masses of small edible flowers in white, cream, pink and purple.

Red basil has a dark wine colour and a delicious scent and taste.

Chamomile and Daisy attract a range of beneficial insects. Hoverflies and wasps love them.

Bees love Chomfrey and it also provides the perfect source of nutrient-rich mulch for your crops.

Garlic chives’ pretty lacy flowers last for ten or more

days. Chinese broccoli (Kai-lan) is the fastest growing

broccoli with white flowers and lots of side shoots.

Leeks have very useful, long-lasting flowers.

Flower powerDill runs to seed and

flowers all too easily.

Poached Egg Plant, one of my favourite flowers for growing

along the edges of raised beds. Not only is it great

at attracting hoverflies and bees, but it also produces lush green

stems that can easily be dug into the soil when

flowering is over.

Calendula, also known as ‘pot marigolds’ is easy to grow and

keeps flowering through the summer if you regularly pick off

the seed heads.Marigold’s bright yellow

blooms attract hoverflies, bees and butterflies and the strong scent of the

French Marigold types is said to deter nematodes.

Like Calendula they will grow in almost any kind of

soil, are easy to save seed from and often confuse pests if inter-

planted with vegetables.

Flowers play an important role in any organic garden, but the criteria for selecting them are different to ornamental gardens – it is their attractiveness to the right kind of insects that is important. Hoverflies, lacewings,

ladybirds and others are the best protection a garden can have against the invasive pests that feed on crops such as aphids, mites, thrips, mealybugs and scale insects. Bees are the primary pollinators. However, many other insects can help pollinate crops including wasps, moths, butterflies and certain species of beetle. The key is to pick flowers that are rich in high-protein pollen and that provide sources of nectar throughout the year. Nasturtium not only attracts ‘bad’ insects away from your crop, but is probably the most colourful and easy to grow ornamental herb.

Days spent at Samara are long and lazy and luxurious. Game drives start a little later than the norm, and often – after some bone-jarringly exciting 4x4-ing – end up at the top of the mountain, were you’re served breakfast under the gazebo, with the Camdeboo Plains spreading out forever way below. The high-plateau grasslands are rich with zebra and giraffe, antelope and buffalo. The Tompkins opened a cheetah sanctuary on the reserve and, on a good day, you can walk alongside one of these elegant predators. There are biome walks (the reserve is unique in that it has four biomes on one piece of land - Nama-Karoo, plateau grassland, savannah and thicket), and excellent birdwatching (more than 220 species of birds have been recorded – including the endangered blue crane). There are also aardvark safaris ... one of the most elusive animals in Africa, Samara has unusually high sightings, particularly in the winter months. For those who like to sit and relax and take advantage of the lodge (absolutely nothing wrong with that!), there are regular visits from the baboons who run across the rolling lawns, and it’s not unusual to return from an evening game drive and find a buffalo grazing near the rooms. Just three quarters of an hour from Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape, it’s quite a destination – by air or road – but it’s heart-stoppingly beautiful (as it’s invariably described), so well worth the effort.
