Welcome In…

The following was brought to you by Dermatology & Skin Health of Dover, NH.

So you’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer. Scary. But, the good news is, it’s very curable. So, less scary. Skin cancer is common (unfortunately). More than two million Americans will be diagnosed with it this year, and about one in five will develop a skin cancer in their lifetime. One in five. That’s a lot.

There are five standard ways skin cancer is com-bated once it’s deemed you have it:

• Cryotherapy • Radiation • Excision with or without immediate frozen sec-

tion check of the edges• Physical destruction (curettage with electrodes-

sication)• Mohs micrographic surgery

Today, we want to place the focus on Mohs sur-gery. Why? Mohs surgery has been proven to be the most effective technique for removing Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (the two most common types of skin cancer).

What is Mohs surgery?

According to www.skincancer.org:It is the excision of a cancer from the skin, fol-

lowed by the detailed mapping and complete micro-scopic examination of the cancerous tissue and the margins surrounding it. If the margins are indeed cancer-free, the surgery is ended. If not, more tis-sue is removed, and this procedure is repeated until the margins of the final tissue examined are clear of cancer.

The beautiful thing about Mohs is it takes into con-sideration the healthy tissue that surrounds the af-fected area. Cure rates are high. Due to the complete systematic methods of Mohs microscopic search for the roots of the skin cancer in question, the surgery offers the best chances amongst the five standard ways of complete removal. We’re talking 98% higher with Mohs than the other standard methods.

Look, cancer is not a fun thing to talk about. Be-ing that skin cancer is so prevalent it’s important to research your options in the event you’re diagnosed. So, in support of that, the informational lines are open.

In summation of Mohs microscopic surgery and why it’s so highly regarded as a remediation tech-nique:

• It boasts the highest cure rate for skin cancer• It assures that the smallest amount of normal

skin is removed, maximizing the likelihood for pre-serving function and minimizing scar

• There exist fewer risks with local anesthesia com-pared with general anesthesia

HEALTH 3THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, HEALTHY LIVING GUIDE - Thursday, August 27, 2015

I’m sure by now we’ve all heard and/or have seen the great sinkhole of I-93 north, in Concord. I did not see the hole in per-son, but the pictures were absolutely stunning. To imagine that the road was normal in appearance and in a matter of minutes it underwent dramatic changes is startling. It was a stark reminder that an average day, can be changed rather dramati-cally and unexpectedly. Further, it can change and there may be nothing we can do about it. That is truly a concept, that I find frightening. The thing about sinkholes is that while they seem to occur suddenly, they of-ten have long underlying histories. The NH DOT said that this sinkhole was probably caused by a culvert letting go that dates back to the 1950s.

My question is this: are we aware that our health can function in a very sim-ilar way. Normal one min-ute and less than ideal the next. Or do we live as if we are invincible? Like we will never be sick and we will never slow down? The truth is that our health, if not looked after prop-erly, can be much like a sinkhole. Meaning: many illnesses, diseases, and health issues appear to crop up instantly or sur-prisingly, but most have a long running underly-ing cause. The difference between your health and a sinkhole, is that you are not helpless in your health concerns.

Most diseases that kill us, do take awhile to form, but most are also lifestyle related. This means, you are in the driver seat. You don’t have to be a victim.

Your Health is in Your Hands

by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC.Contributing Writer

You don’t have to sit back and wait for a disaster, a bad diagnosis, or ter-rible health reports. You don’t have to have your own personal sinkhole. You can take control of your health and greatly improve your long term health picture.

Some of the most com-mon preventable diseases are diabetes, some can-cers, stroke, heart dis-ease, and lung disease. That’s not to say, that in some cases, these dis-eases can occur and were unpreventable. That can happen. It does mean, however, all your risk of these issues can be im-proved with certain life-style choices. Here are some easy ways to poten-tially decrease your risks of the common prevent-able diseases:

1 ) S t o p s m o k i n g : shouldn’t this be obvious now? Save money and save your health.

2) Lose weight: this can help with your risk of heart disease, diabetes, cer-tain cancers, and stroke. Simply put, we all need to move daily and focus on eating more fruits/veggies and less processed food.

3) Decrease stress: exer-cise, daily journaling, and daily prayer/mediation have all been thought to help with stress, which

is a factor in depression, hypertension, and even heart disease.

4) Visit you chiroprac-tor: Chiropractic is not a treatment of those pre-ventable diseases. How-ever, a common complaint I hear in our offices when first meeting someone is that back pain prevents them from daily exercise. Movement helps control weight, decrease stress, and decreases depres-sion.

5) Drink more water: I think most people are dehydrated. Your body doesn’t run well like this. Try drinking at least 64 ounces daily and, depend-ing on your activity level or your size, you may need more.

Don’t wait for your health to fail. I’d love to be invincible, but we are not. There is no free lunch, and when it comes to our health, each choice we make today is helping inform what our future looks like. My advice to all of us, is to do your best, take your best shot and stack the odds in your favor by making good choices today that create life long good health.

(BPT) - Three years ago biking down the block would not have been possi-ble for motivational speak-er Roy Roden, one of the 1.5 million Americans who suffer from Parkinson’s disease. But recently he embarked on a journey he calls the PD Challenge -- a bike ride from British Colombia to San Fran-cisco to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease. His message to others with Parkinson’s is powerfully simple - stay active, be your own advocate, keep a positive attitude, and don’t give up hope.

As a former personal trainer, Roden says staying active is critical and credits exercise with making him stronger both mentally and physically. The benefits of physical activity are well established in Parkinson’s disease, and it’s no coin-cidence that Roden chose a cycling trek for the PD Challenge.

“There was a time when I couldn’t care for myself, let alone engage in the activities I love, and I’m determined to do some-thing bigger than myself,” Roden said.

Roden was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009. His symptoms wors-ened over time until he couldn’t brush his teeth or feed himself, let alone live his once active life filled with exercise, travel and the outdoors. He was tak-ing 10 medications daily with waning effectiveness and debilitating side effects that even made it difficult for him to concentrate on a game of Monopoly with his children. But today, life is an inspiring ride for 57-year-old Roy.

To manage his Par-kinson’s disease, Roden decided to pursue Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

therapy, a treatment op-tion that when used with medications may improve quality of life and motor function more than medi-cations alone, and may allow medication reduc-tion. The therapy uses a surgically implanted medi-cal device, similar to a car-diac pacemaker, to deliver electrical stimulation to precisely targeted areas of the brain to reduce some of the most disabling mo-tor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, including shaking, stiff-ness and movement dif-ficulties.

“I wouldn’t be able to do this without DBS, as it gave me my life back. Along the ride people ask about my connection to Parkinson’s and are surprised when I tell them I have it.”

After receiving DBS Ther-apy, Roden said that his quality of life and symp-toms, such as shaking hands and difficulty walk-ing, have noticeably im-proved. As a result, Roden was inspired to accom-plish something extraor-dinary and offer hope to other Parkinson’s patients. Thus, the PD Challenge was born.

“In the absence of a cure, my goal is to educate peo-ple with Parkinson’s about the opportunities they have to live an active life with this debilitating disease,”

said Roy.“DBS therapy is an im-

portant treatment option for Parkinson’s disease that has stood the test of time as an FDA approved therapy. It consistently al-lows those suffering to ex-perience lasting improve-ments that make their quality of life meaningfully better,” said Jonathan Jag-id, M.D., Associate Profes-sor of Clinical Neurological Surgery, Neurology, Ortho-paedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Miami Health System, and also Roy’s neurosurgeon. “Roy has had great results and his efforts to give back are an inspiring example to the Parkinson’s community nationwide.”

Results with the therapy vary, and not every indi-vidual will receive the same benefits or experience the same complications. Pa-tients should discuss po-tential risks and benefits of DBS with their physician. Medtronic DBS Therapy is the only FDA-approved DBS therapy in the Unit-ed States for Parkinson’s disease, as well as essen-tial tremor and dystonia (through a Humanitarian Device Exemption).

More information about Medtronic DBS Thera-py can be found at www.medtronicdbs.com.

and liver metabolism. Resistant carbohydrates, such as beans are nec-essary to stabilize blood sugar.

The next important food is protein. You need to choose some good lean meats, chicken, fish, eggs to name a few. You can also get protein in your diet from plant choices. An old rule of thumb to form a perfect meat free protein is a mix of 3 from this list; legume/bean, rice/grain/ corn, nut, seed. You could have granola for breakfast with oatmeal, nuts & sunflower seeds and get a healthy mix including protein. Or you could make a rice, beans, corn dish for dinner with some tasty spices added for another healthy protein option.

Lakes Region Commu-nity Services’ 5th An-nual Miles for Smiles 5K Run/Walk will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Downtown Plymouth. The starting line is at the Plymouth Regional Senior Center, 8 Depot St. The race begins at 6 p.m.

Proceeds from Miles for Smiles help to fund den-tal care for adults with developmental disabili-ties. Except for extrac-tions, dental services for adults are not covered by Medicaid, leaving many unable to access the care they need for good oral health. If you’ve partici-pated before, you know Miles for Smiles is a fun community event. Every-one is welcome!

“The wonderful thing about Miles for Smiles is that it spotlights just how caring and support-ive our community is,” said LRCS StaffWorks Director Laurie Vachon. “The way that dental pro-fessionals, businesses, students, local families and many others have supported us in helping individuals meet a very basic human need, is truly heart-warming.”

Miles for Smiles ma-jor sponsors are: Gold Crown: Dr. R. Thomas Finn - Beautiful Smiles, Si lver Fi l l ing: Winn-isquam Dental; Hiller Orthodontics; Northeast Delta Dental, NH Healthy Families, and Mid-State Health. Other sponsors include: Everett Johnson, DMD; NH Dental Society Foundation, Circle Den-tal, Community Guaranty Savings Bank, Dr. Joan Eversole, Tilton Family Dental and Dr. Jeffrey R. Crowell.

There is a discount-ed entry fee of $20 for anyone who registers by Sept. 14. Registration on the day of the race is $25.

The first 75 registrants are guaranteed a mug. The route weaves through the downtown Plymouth area and is substantially flat. The race is profes-sionally timed.
