Our bodies need to

convert glucose

(sugar) from food

into energy . A

hormone called

insulin is essential

for this to happen .

People with

diabetes no longer

produce insulin , or

not enough insulin .

I f untreated ,

diabetes can lead to

damage to your

eyes , feet and in

extreme cases ,

coma or death .

When people with

diabetes eat

carbohydrates ,

which are foods

such as grains , fruit ,

dairy and starchy

vegetables , they

cannot convert the

glucose in these

foods into energy .

Instead , the glucose

stays in the blood

and results in high

blood glucose

levels .

Skip meals , especially i f you ’re on

medication as this could lead to a

hypoglycemic episode (very low

blood sugar levels) .  

Drink excessive amounts of alcohol .

Have foods and drinks high in sugar .  

Have foods high in fat .

Swap to low glycemic index

carbohydrates (foods that make you

feel fuller for longer and give you

more energy throughout the day) .  

Include at least 1 serve of

carbohydrate food with each meal .  

Eat a variety of whole grains , fruit and

vegetables .

Exercise at least 30 mins per day (this

can be spread out throughout the

day) .
