Our bodies need to
convert glucose
(sugar) from food
into energy . A
hormone called
insulin is essential
for this to happen .
People with
diabetes no longer
produce insulin , or
not enough insulin .
I f untreated ,
diabetes can lead to
damage to your
eyes , feet and in
extreme cases ,
coma or death .
When people with
diabetes eat
carbohydrates ,
which are foods
such as grains , fruit ,
dairy and starchy
vegetables , they
cannot convert the
glucose in these
foods into energy .
Instead , the glucose
stays in the blood
and results in high
blood glucose
levels .
Did you know? Diabetes is the
leading cause ofblindness inworking-age
adults. Diabetesalso increases therisk of heart attackand stroke up to 4
