This Mother’s Daygive her the gift of support for a Heart-Healthy life
Celebrate Mother’s Day and help her prevent heart disease! Heart disease continues to be the number one killer of American women.1 This year, as you think of the perfect gift for your mom, consider how you can contribute to her heart’s health. A mother’s love and care make a diff erence in the life and health of a family, but the business of everyday life can make it diffi cult to practice self-care. Consider things you can do to help reduce mom’s risk of heart disease. Certain risk factors like age, family history and menopause cannot be controlled, but practicing healthier habits can prevent or improve certain health problems. 1
Habits to change Health Problems to improveQuit smoking High blood pressureLimit alcohol High cholesterolBe more active Overweight or obesityEat healthier DiabetesReduce stress All
“Mother’s Day” activities that can be practiced all year:Cook her a delicious meal• One that is made with fresh ingredients and colorful fruits and vegetables. Help her with grocery shopping• Plan a trip to the Farmer’s Market or local market on days when fresh produce is on sale.
Prepare a shopping list together. And before you go, treat her to a healthy snack! While shopping, practice reading food labels• It will make the information more familiar and easy to use when she shops on her own. Spot foods that contain added sugar• Sugar has many names and can be found in many foods. A healthy meal should be low in
sodium, fat and sugar! 1 As you review food labels with her, see how many names on the ingredients list are for sugar. Here are a few: corn syrup, corn sweetener, high-fructose syrup, sucrose, dextrose, maltose, honey, molasses, raw sugar, invert sugar, syrup, caramel, and fruit juice concentrates.1
• A high consumption of added sugar has been associated with an increased risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.2
Because everyone, especially “mom,” deserves a chance at a long healthy life, with your help she will make healthy lifestyle changes.May 8 is Rethink Your Drink Day, a campaign that raises awareness about the health eff ects of sugary drinks and promotes the benefi ts of drinking water. For more ideas on how limit added sugar in your diet go to: www.RethinkYourDrinkDay.com.For more information about heart-healthy eating, please visit: www.womenshealth.gov. mayo 2019 Health Note

Community & School Garden Support: Off ers support and education to residents, families, students and educators growing their own vegetables and fruits at their local community and school gardens.
The Harvest of the Month fruit is strawberries. Spring is the best season for strawberries. You can buy them all year-long but they are the tastiest in May!
Consider giving your mom some fresh strawberries for Mother’s Day this year. In season fruits or vegetables are easier to grow and more accessible.
Strawberries are excellent sources of vitamin C, fi ber and folate. These nutritients help prevent heart and cancer problems. Just 6 strawberries make an excellent snack. Wow, isn’t that amazing!Enjoy and eat a tasty one with mom!
