• Indian Healthcare Sector is expected to reach US$ 100 billion by 2015 and $280 billion by 2022.
• Currently growing at around 20 percent a year• Government of India has increased health expenditure to 2.5
percent of the GDP by the end of the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-17)
• India will need 1.75 million additional beds by the end of 2025• US$ 86 billion of investment is required to achieve 1 doctor, 2
beds and 2.3 nurses per 1000 population by 2025• India’s share in the global medical tourism industry will reach
around 3 percent by the end of 2013 • Medical tourism is expected to generate revenue around US$ 3
billion by 2013, growing at a CAGR of around 26 percent • The National Rural Health Mission (NHRM) had allocated US$ 10.15
billion for the upgradation and capacity enhancement of healthcare facilities.
Challenges Facing Indian Healthcare
• Missing Five A's: Availability, Accessibility, Affordability, Acceptability and Accountability
• Capacity: Physical infrastructure, Human Resources, and Financing Medical Care
• Low public sector spending 25-30% as compared to private sector
• Very low per capita healthcare spent (US$ 50 as compared to US$ 250 in China and US$ 850 in Brazil)
• Low healthcare insurance penetration – 7-8% only
Investments Required…
• By 2013 a total of 349, 321 beds required and an investment of approximately INR 880 billion
• This will go up to 808, 620 beds and an investment of INR 2, 113 billion
• The investment of this scale will increase the bed ratio from 0.9 beds per 1000 to 1.85 beds per 1000.
