WELLNESS AND HEALTH INDUSTRY -
ASIA PACIFICThe healthcare market in Asia-Pacific (APAC) is expected
to grow by 7.2% in 2019 due to the growth of smart
hospitals and developments in the home care segment
and medical tourism. This, in turn, has increased the
demand for technology, innovative healthcare
programmes, as well as drugs and medical devices based
on advanced technology. Conventional growth drivers
such as supportive government regulations and policies
are also a major boost for projected market growth in the
APAC healthcare industry.

5. The Asia-Pacific health club industry can be
categorized into three market tiers.
Considering the various economies and cultures across
the Asia-Pacific, the development of the health club

the industry can be categorized into three tiers.
Tier 1 is characterized by established, mature markets
like Australia and New Zealand, which have the highest
member penetration rates in the region. The health club
market landscape in Australia and New Zealand is
dynamic, consisting of various fitness offerings, including
24-hour clubs, studios, and full-service facilities.
Tier 2 belongs to rapidly-expanding markets such as
Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan, where fitness
facilities and instruction are increasing in demand and
professionalization, along with a growing concentration
of leading players.
Tier 3 is embodied by emerging markets with potential
for growth and includes Indonesia, India, and China. In
these markets, the industry is concentrated in densely
populated cities, while areas outside of these major

member penetration rates in the region.
WELLNESS AND HEALTH INDUSTRY -
INDIAIndia is known as the land of Ayurveda, yoga, and
alternative medicines, branches that have evolved
through the years.
The wellness industry in India has rapidly evolved from
being a highly unstructured ecosystem in the 90s to a
more active and growing sector today. Presently, India is
ranked 12 among the top 20 wellness tourism markets as
per the latest findings. The industry growing at a CAGR of
nearly 12% reach an estimated high of Rs. 1.5 trillion by
2020. Rise in disposable incomes and increasing
prevalence of non-communicable diseases are some
factors driving this growth.
India's wellness market is estimated at INR 490 Billion,
and wellness services alone comprise 40% of the market.
The sector has a potential to generate over 3 million job
opportunities. As per analysts, the Ayurvedic market is
estimated to be at Rs. 4,500 crore at present. The herbal
products forms 6-7 per cent of the overall personal care
products market currently while the estimates are that it
could grow to about 10 per cent of the segment by FY20
as the trend accelerates.
The products market is worth about INR 40 Billion with
over-the-counter products such as digestives, health
food and pain balms, constituting almost 75% the

segment. India has 9,000 units engaged in the
manufacture of AYUSH drugs.
The biggest markets for Indian herbal products are
Western Europe, Russia, USA, Kazakhstan, UAE, Nepal,
Ukraine, Japan, Philippines, Kenya etc. India has over
8000 medicinal plants found in the Himalayan region,
around its coastline, deserts and rainforest eco-system.
More than 32 Million people are practicing yoga in the
USA alone. The demand for yoga across the world is
growing exponentially.
The Government of India has set up a dedicated
Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani,
Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) with the aim of
providing impetus to these ancient healthcare systems
with a targeted thrust. The AYUSH sector has an annual
turnover of around INR 120 Billion. The sector is
dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises,
accounting for more than 80% of the enterprises, located
in identifiable geographical clusters.
According to industry experts, the market size of India's
beauty, cosmetics and grooming market will touch 20
billion dollars by 2025 from the current level of 6.5 billion
dollars.
With over 700 spas predicted to open doors in the next
two years, there's no doubt that the spa industry in India
is growing fast. With the extended global spa economy
now estimated to be worth $255 billion. With a CAGR of
40 percent per year, the spa industry is the sub sector
with the most significant growth prospects among all
personal care sub sectors in India.
The government is also making a push for programmes
promoting the wellness industry in India. The Make in
India initiative is expected to bring in more investments
and opportunities in this sector. The Ministry of AYUSH
with a separate department for Yoga, which has been
exempted from service tax, is another example.
Increasingly, many investors and incubators have begun
to offer their support and are mentoring startups in the
wellness space.
As part of Ayushman Bharat, 1.5 lakh health and wellness
centres were proposed to be set up in a phased manner
to provide comprehensive primary health care. The
funding will be shared by the state and the central
governments, with the Centre providing 60% of the
funds.
Choosing mental and physical health over everything
widens our horizon. This is one reason that wellness
tourism is experiencing a rise in India. Ayurveda, yoga,
meditation, rejuvenation are the main aspects that the
country takes pride in.

PRESENT AND FUTURE TRENDS OF
DIFFERENT SEGMENTS OF WELLNESS
INDUSTRYFUTURE OF AYURVEDA WITH WELLNESS INDUSTRY
Ayurveda, a 5000-year-old traditional medicine system,
derived its name from two Sanskrit words, Ayur (means
life) and Veda (means knowledge or science). Ayurveda
isn't merely about medicine; it focuses on treating and
eradicating the problem right from the root cause of it, by
taking account of diet, lifestyle, routine, exercise and
circumstances of a patient. Ayurveda in India keeps its
focus on Holistic Healing i.e. purifying the mind, body and
soul.
Many recent studies and report clearly explain that the
revival of Ayurveda is not restricted to India and China but
from Asia to Africa and North America to Europe. Ranging
from diabetes to cancer and depression to cardiovascular
diseases, today, people are relying on Ayurveda to treat a
variety of physical, mental, and genetic issues.
The ayurveda industry market size in India is $ 4.4 billion,
or roughly Rs 30,000 crore (2018) and is projected to
record a CAGR of 16 per cent (13 billion ) by 2025.With its
wealth of 6,000-7,000 medicinal plants, India is the
second-largest exporter of ayurvedic and herbal
products in the world.
AYURVEDA PRODUCTS
The Ayurveda product segment (valued at approximately
USD 2.27 billion in 2016) has been flourishing in India for
many decades. Ethical products, classical Ayurveda
products, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and
personal care products (including cosmetics) are the
major categories being retailed. Some of the prominent
blockbuster products inc lude Chyawanprash,
TriphalaChurna, Ashwagandha, and Aloe Vera products.
Retail franchising has provided a big push towards the
launch of Ayurveda companies. In addition, e-commerce
is already playing a larger role in taking Ayurveda
products to the masses. Market places such as Amazon,
Flipkart, and other online pharmacies have collaborated
with large corporates to retail their products to the
masses.
AYURVEDA SERVICES
The Ayurveda services segment (valued at approximately
USD 0.75 billion in 2016) includes two broader categories.
Medical Services: This segment constitutes clinics,
hospitals, and traditional family-run vaidyasalas offering
curative services.
Wellbeing Services: From trying to achieve mere
physical wellness to adapting a "wellbeing" approach that
considers physical, mental/psychological, and spiritual
health.
Undoubtedly, the future of Ayurveda is full of
tremendously lucrative opportunities, but will India
maintain its supremacy in this domain or not is a pressing
question in the light of ongoing challenges and
shortcomings. First of all, quality Ayurveda is impossible
without quality herbs because, for the organic cultivation
![Page 8: HEALTH WELLNESS MEDICAL VALUE TRAVEL › wp-content › uploads › 2019 › 08 › ... · and opportunities in this sector. The Ministry of AYUSH with a separate department for Yoga,](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070715/5ed81c55d9463e16115a25ad/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
of these herbs, there required farms and land masses
that were never exposed to artificial fertilizers'. Secondly,
though India is known as the cradle of Ayurveda, there
are not enough Ayurveda colleges and institutions where
the young generation can study this traditional science
and make a career in this field. So, if concrete steps are
not taken, there would be an acute shortage of Ayurveda
professionals. Hence, both Government and private
players should come forward to exploit future
opportunities through PPP model as Ayurveda has a
great potential to push Indian economy to newer heights.
YOGA AND MEDITATIONYoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice
that originated in India. The word 'yoga' derives from
Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the
union of body and consciousness.
According to a study conducted in 2018, over half of the
200 million Yoga practitioners are of Indian origin.
According to global statistics, the number of Yoga
practitioners is predicted to rise to a staggering 55 million
people, by 2020 in the USA alone.
Its capacity to support and enhance the remedy of a
varied spectrum of illnesses along with preventive
capabilities makes it the poster of the Wellness Industry.
The many health benefits that Yoga offers are said to be
effective for treating a majority of ailments, like
hypertension, insomnia, diabetes, gastrointestinal
afflictions, depression, anxiety, PTSD, sleep disorders,
psychosis etc. Yoga also holds a very important position
when it comes to prevention of diseases, regulation of
blood pressure, blood sugar; hormonal changes and
balancing bodily fluids. Practitioners have a holistic
image of a fitness experience when they get associated
with a reputed yoga studio.
On a general note, it is widely agreed that regular yoga
practice increases the quality of l i fe. Besides
strengthening the practitioner, it provides them with
better mental clarity, encouraging them to adapt to a
healthier way of life and making them balanced
physically, mentally and emotionally.
It has also found its way into the travel & tourism industry,
popularly known as 'Yoga Tourism'. A sudden entry of
concepts like Yoga retreats and cruises in many Indian
cities like Rishikesh, Goa, Kerala, Pondicherry, Kerala,
Gokarna are home to a vast number of Yoga schools and
retreats, that cater to the various styles of Yoga and can
be chosen to suit one's budget needs.
HOW WILL THE INDUSTRY CHANGE?
• Yoga is predicted to be among the top fitness
trends in 2019.
• The revenue of the USA yoga industry in 2020 is
projected at $11.6 billion. The massive jump symbolizes
rapid growth and development of the fitness category.
• Yoga will positively influence therapies related to
children and of individuals coping with learning
disabilities and other mental and physical ailments.
• Incorporation of modified forms of yoga in
educational institutes and corporate establishments will
be witnessed.
• The years 2019 - 2020 are bound by the Yoga
revolution that will change education, healthcare, and
wellness segments. Yoga will be reiterated as a boon to
the modern-day world, physically, mentally and
economically.
Infact, Yoga has been ranked at number 7 in ACSM's
(American College of Sports Medicine) list of "Top 10
fitness predictions for 2019." Thus, it is safe to conclude
that Yoga as a trend is only bound to grow at a faster pace
and not stagnate anytime soon.

HOMEOPATHY WITH WELLNESS AND ITS
FUTUREAccording to the World Health Organization (WHO),
Homeopathy is currently the second largest system of
medicine in the world. Founded by German physician Dr
Samuel Hahnemann just over 200 years ago,
homeopathy's evolution is certainly worth exploring.
Homeopathy came to India in 1810 when Dr. John Martin
Honigberger, a French traveler who learnt homeopathy
from Dr Hahnemann, visited India and treated patients.
He treated Maharaja Ranjit Singh - the then ruler of
Punjab - with a homeopathic remedy Dulcamara while he
suffered from paralysis of the vocal cords.
In early twentieth century a large number of homeopaths
from Bengal proved several local herbs and trees for
homeopathic medicine. Dr.Sarat Chandra Ghose was a
leading homeopath of his time who proved several local
herbs into homeopathic medicine.
Standing Tall Even Today & Growing Exponentially
Today, homeopathy has an estimated market size of over
Rs 26,000 crore and is trusted by over 50 crore people
across more than 80 countries in the world. In the last few
years, homeopathy has grown three times faster than
allopathy @ 25-30% annually.
* In England, 42% British physicians refer patients to
homeopaths.
* More than a third of the French people use
homeopathy. A survey of French pharmacists found that
an astounding 94.5% reported advising pregnant women
to use homeopathy.
* It has been estimated that over 6 million people in the
US use homeopathy for self-care.
* Homeopathy is followed by over 10 crore people in
India. The country has aRs 3,600 crore organized
homeopathy market. There are over 2.25 lakh registered
homeopathy practitioners with 20,000 new homeopaths
being added every year
From 200 drugs in Hahnemann's time, today there are
more than 2,000 clinically-proved homeopathic
medicines in practice.
Government patronage
* The Government of India's Department of AYUSH
promotes Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani,
Siddha and Homeopathy since 2003. It paved the way to
form the Ministry of AYUSH in 2014 ensuring optimal
development and propagation of systems of health care.
* The Union budget 2017 allocated Rs 1,428.65 crore for
AYUSH ministry amid the government's increased focus
on promoting alternative medicines.
* Homeopathic treatments are now being offered by
insurance companies under their comprehensive health
insurance policy.
* The Government of India is promoting an integrated
system of medicine wherein All India Institute of Medical
Sciences (AIIMS) faci l it ies across India have a
homeopathic division.
From being an alternative system of medicine,
homeopathy today is a complementary system of
medicine and can be used alongside allopathy. Some
hospitals in India and Dubai already have homeopathy
department as part of their OPDs.
India has thousands of herbs, vegetables, insects which
are different from the Western world. These medicines
are waiting to be proved for homeopathic usage. We
need many young homeopaths to come ahead and prove
these medicines.
SPA, BEAUTY AND FITNESS- PRESENT
AND FUTURE TRENDSThe overall Beauty Business in India is growing rapidly
with the cosmetics market growing at 15-20% annually.
The retail beauty and cosmetics market in India currently
estimated at USD 950 million is pegged at USD 2.68 billion
by the year 2020.Personal care market to touch $ 20
billion in India by 2025. Specialized categories like
cosmetics, fragrance, men's grooming and skin care are
![Page 10: HEALTH WELLNESS MEDICAL VALUE TRAVEL › wp-content › uploads › 2019 › 08 › ... · and opportunities in this sector. The Ministry of AYUSH with a separate department for Yoga,](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070715/5ed81c55d9463e16115a25ad/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
set to outpace the growth of generic categories and will
hold ~40-45% of the overall market by 2022.
The Spa Association of India estimates that the spa
industry is currently valued at around Rs. 11,000 crores
and will continue to grow at a fast pace. It is estimated
that the salon and spa business together account for 31
per cent of the total size of the beauty and wellness
market. The compounded annual growth rate of the
beauty & wellness business in India has been around 18
per cent.
An important feature is the tremendous growth of e-
commerce, with online stores also becoming popular
shopping destinations, especially for cosmetic products.
The internet has changed the way we do business. It is
estimated that India will be the fastest growing e-
commerce market.
Scientific techniques and modern beauty concepts are
influencing the business, giving rise to vast varieties of
beauty products. Men's personal care and anti-ageing
products are slated for growth.
An important challenge for the beauty industry in 2018
will be the need for professionally qualified personnel.
Beauty care as a service sector offers great scope for
employment and entrepreneurship for women. This is
one area where government direction, assistance and
encouragement are needed. It is necessary to learn
about the market and make use of changing conditions,
like the internet, commercial advertising methods, e-
commerce, different business models, etc.
Products and services are needed for the global market
and this requires efforts at various levels. Markets need
to be explored. Presenting the products in a globally
attractive manner is also essential, along with knowledge
of the demands of the global market.
Government can provide support in identifying markets,
trade and promotions. Skill development and vocational
training in beauty and wellness need to be geared, not
only for the international market, but also to compete
with international brands in the Indian market. Our
traditional knowledge of herbal healing is a real boon, but
it needs to be related to modern demands and
techniques.
The Indian fitness market: Size and Scope
At the end of FY2018, revenues in the Indianfitness
market amounted to USD 908million. Further growth in
the segment, expected at a CAGR of 9.3% between 2018
and 2022, is expected to take the total market value to a
whopping USD 1,296 million in 2022.Revenue is expected
to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2018-2022) of 9.3 %
resulting in a market volume of US$1,296m in
2022.However, a fact worth noting is that a major portion
of these revenues will be driven by the consumption of
fitness wearables.
Simultaneously, the number of upscale fitness centres is
growing at a pace similar to the rapid rise in disposable
income among consumers between the ages of 20 to 45
years old.
" The Indian fitness industry is also helping bring
about a much-needed revolution in the country that's
triggered by the increasing number of cases of obesity,
diabetes, and heart disease.
" Spending money on gym memberships, which
was earlier perceived to be a luxury, is now becoming a
way of life for several people.
" Furthermore, there is an increasing number of
people in tier 2 and tier 3 cities looking for wellness and
fitness solutions, with most men opting for muscle-
building training and women for cardio-vascular and

" A new corporate culture wherein companies
provide fully-equipped gyms and health clubs to
employees in the office is enabling many people to look at
fitness in a new light- as a fun way to destress after a long

day at work rather than a task that must be completed.
" The hospitality industry is also following the
trend, with hotels in smaller cities providing gym facilities
to guests. Prompted by this trend of greater demand for
fitness amenities, gyms, health clubs have become
almost standard features at new residential complexes
that are being built, not only in metros and tier 1 cities,
but in tier 2 cities as well.
" At the same time, there is also a greater demand
among consumers for home gym equipment and
services being sold through online portals and mobile
apps, along with the ability to access gym trainers, fitness
experts, and nutritionists etc.
" Moreover, people are also increasingly
becoming aware of the many merits of working out
regularly, such as reducing stress, anxiety, and
depression, and keeping other diseases at bay.
All of these points towards a brighter future for India's
fitness industry, while enabling consumers to lead
healthier lives.
ACUPUNCTURE, NATUROPATHY, REIKI
AND OTHER TRADITIONAL THERAPIES
Many different areas make up the practice of
complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
Alternative therapies refer to a broad group of natural
and spiritual healing methods that are different than the
conventional western medicine (or pharmaceutical
medicine). Many of these healing methods have been
used for centuries in many different cultures. A few
examples are Ayurveda, Acupuncture, Aromatherapy,
Herbal therapy, Meditation, Naturopathy, Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM), etc.
Although traditional medicine, including Antibiotics and
Allopathy, are still preferred by the majority of
individuals, alternative therapies like Acupressure and
Reiki are rapidly gaining momentum, and are even
recommended by several reputed doctors to their
patients. The reason for this slow but sure shift is that
while traditional medicine is effective in an emergency, it
is usually quite expensive, and often, has severe side
effects.
In India, at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science)
now it is compulsory to follow these traditional
alternative therapies along with their western
treatments.
Alternative therapies like Meditation, Chi Organiser,
Aromatherapy and Reiki, are designed to work on the
mind- the control centre of the entire body. They help one
achieve inner stability and perspective by centering one's
thoughts, removing negativity and volatility and inducing
a change in the person's very being. On the other hand,
therapies such as Acupressure, Power Yoga, Chiropractic
treatment, work on the physical body, helping trigger
specific senses, nodes, through pressure points that
awaken the human body's self-healing capabilities.
Thanks to their incredible health benefits which not only
affect the body but also, the mind and soul, these
therapies have found immense popularity.
According to WHO forecast, the global herbal market
would be worth $5 trillion by the year 2050. As of today,
Europe and the United States are two major herbal
product markets in the world, with a market share of 41%
and 20%, respectively.
Today, several start-ups have also begun delving into the
world of alternate therapy, by providing preventive and
holistic treatments, connecting healers with seekers,
creating well researched exclusive content to shed light
on these lesser known methods of treatment
As per WHO's recent document " WHO Traditional
Medicine Strategy 2014-2023, 103 countries have
recognized "Acupuncture" as an independent System of
Medicine.(Only India is deprived of the system which was
originated in India ) . As per recent stat ist ics
"Acupuncture" is the largest growing Medical System in
the world, next to Allopathy. WHO has also published
definite training guide lines for "Acupuncture ".There are
around one lakh or more passionate acupuncturists are
practicing in India. The Global Market for Acupuncture is
expected to reach USD 24551.6 million by the end of
2023, as per a latest report by Market Research Future
(MRFR). The Acupuncture Industry is projected to expand
at 14.50 % CAGR during the forecast period (2018-2023).

means of touch, in order to activate the natural healing
processes of the patient's body and restore physical and
emotional well-being.For those who are already affected
by heart problems, Reiki is a boon and not only reduces
their BP, but also helps them become a calmer and
happier person.
DIET, NUTRITION BALANCE FOOD AND
HEALTHY LIVING -FUTURE TRENDS
According to the Global Nutrition Report 2018, India is
facing a major malnutrition crisis as it holds almost a third
of world's burden for stunting.Nearly 47 million or 4 out
of 10 children in India are not meeting their full human
potential because of chronic undernutrition or stunting.
With 46.6 million children who are stunted, India tops the
list of countries followed by Nigeria (13.9 million) and
Pakistan (10.7 million),as per the Global Nutrition Report
2018
Stunting, or low height for age, is caused by long-term
insufficient nutrient-intake and frequent infections.India
also figures among the set of countries that has more
than a million overweight children. The other nations are
China, Indonesia, India, Egypt, US, Brazil and Pakistan.Of
the 38.3 million children globally overweight, 5.4 million
are in South Asia and 4.8 million are in East Asia.
Overweight and obesity are on the rise in almost every
country, with two billion of the world's seven billion
people now overweight or obese and a less than one per
cent chance of meeting the global target of halting the
rise in obesity and diabetes by 2025.In India, 16 per cent
of adult men and 22 per cent of adult women are
overweight.
Global organic food market stood at $ 110.25 billion in
2016 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 16.15per cent,
in value terms, during 2017 - 2022, to reach $ 262.85
billion by 2022.According to the Agricultural and
Processed Food Products Export Development Authority
(APEDA), the demand for Indian organic food products is
on the constant increase worldwide as India exported
organic products worth $515 million in the financial year
2017-18, from $370 million in 2016-17.
With the World Health Organisation calling for a complete
removal of trans fat from the food supply by 2023, the
edible oil industry, bakeries and halwais in India,
including HalwaiAssociation and Hotel and Restaurant
Association of Northern India, too, have pledged to do
their bit, committing to phase it out by 2022 with the
pledge 'India@75 - freedom from trans-fat by 2022.As far
as trans-fat is concerned, we are coming up with
regulations where edible oil cannot have more than two
percent of trans fat and final food or bakery product will
have not more than 0.5 percent. As soon as these
standards are put in place, businesses will have to adhere
to it and if they don't, it will be a violation of the Food
Safety Act and they will be liable for prosecution
Fifteen companies from the packaged food industry -
NestleNSE 1.27 %, Mapro, MTR, BritanniaNSE 0.33 %,
Bikanervala, Patanjali, Bagrry's, Hindustan Unilever,
Weikfield, Kraft Heinz, Del Monte, Haldiram's, Kellogs, ITC
and Marico - have signed up with voluntary commitments
to begin reducing salt and sugar in their products by
2020.
In India we eat much more salt in our food. While the
recommended amount is not more than one teaspoon of
salt per day an adult on an average, studies says twice the
amount is actually used. We have a whole lot of salty
snacks and evening snacking is a persistent habit… most
snacks are high in fat and salt," says Sheela Krishna
swamy, noted dietician and national president, Indian
Dietetic Association.
Right nutritional behavior and dietary choices are needed
to achieve dietary goals. The following 15 dietary
guidelines provide a broad framework for appropriate
action as given by National Institute of Nutrition, India:
1. Eat variety of foods to ensure a balanced diet.
2. Ensure provision of extra food and healthcare to
pregnant and lactating women.
3. Promote exclusive breastfeeding for six months and
encouragebreastfeeding till two years or as long as one
can.
4. Feed home based semi solid foods to the infant after
six months.
5. Ensure adequate and appropriate diets for children
and adolescents, both in health and sickness.
6. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits.
7. Ensure moderate use of edible oils and animal foods
and very less use of ghee/ butter/ vanaspati.
8. Avoid overeating to prevent overweight and obesity.
9. Exercise regularly and be physically active to maintain

MUSIC THERAPY FOR HOLISTIC HEALINGMusic is medicine. According to Cancer Research UK
(2018), benefits of music therapy include:
• Increased expression of emotions
• Increased coping with symptoms of a disease and its
treatment
• Increased relaxation and feelings of comfort
• Improved emotional and physical well being
• Increased self-confidence and self esteem
• Increased or rekindled sense of creativity
C o m m o n g o a l s i n m u s i c t h e ra py, a re t h e
development of:
• Communication skills (using vocal/verbal sounds and
gestures)
• Social skills (making eye contact, turn-taking, initiating
interaction, and self-esteem)
• Sensory skills (through touch, listening, and levels of
awareness)
• Physical skills (fine and gross motor control and
movement)
• Cognitive skills (concentration and attention, imitation,
and sequencing)
• Emotional skills (expression of feelings non-verbally)
While most of us would agree that music can be relaxing,
how is relaxation promoted with music therapy?
• Music can lead to relaxation of tense muscles .When
you allow your muscles to relax and loosen your body,
your mind relaxes too
• Listening to music can also enhance other stress-
relieving activities
• Music can also help the brain reach a meditative state
• Music triggers activity in the same part of the brain that
releases dopamine (the 'pleasure chemical')
• Music triggers networks of neurons into an organized
movement
• Learning a musical instrument can improve fine motor
and reasoning skills
• Your heartbeat changes to mimic the music that you
listen to
17.3 Million American adults had at least one episode of
major depression every year, making it one of the most
common conditions in the United States. Music therapy
has been suggested as the best complementary therapy
for depression even than meditation.
Maybe all you need to feel better is some time to relax
and listen to some of your favorite songs. Music can be a
powerful solution to solving small and large problems,
reaching goals more easily and quickly, and living an
overall happier life.

INDUSTRYTechnology is the biggest factor supporting the scope for
the wellness apps industry. With the consumers coming
back for health related information, fitness graphs, diet
schedules, tips and tricks etc, the market is booming as it
is estimated to be worth USD 90.49 Billion by 2022,
registering a CAGR of 33.7%, according to a report by
Markets And Markets.
In the upcoming year, there will be a huge impact on
healthcare sector with two of the most talked about
technologies - Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain.
In addition, within the AI framework, machine learning
will further strengthen human and machine interaction.
![Page 14: HEALTH WELLNESS MEDICAL VALUE TRAVEL › wp-content › uploads › 2019 › 08 › ... · and opportunities in this sector. The Ministry of AYUSH with a separate department for Yoga,](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070715/5ed81c55d9463e16115a25ad/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
This would create an impact on diagnostics, risk analytics
and drug discovery verticals. According to the estimates
of a Frost & Sullivan Survey in 2018, AI for healthcare
(IT application) market is expected to cross USD 1.7 billion
by the end of 2019 and projected to achieve CAGR of 68.5
percent by 2022.
Big Data to result in preventive care
Healthcare industry is getting comfortable with data
management. Thus, it is expected to see analytics
solutions which will strive to investigate treatment
viability, drug utilisation, and self-care programmes
specific to chronic conditions. It is expected that almost
50 percent of healthcare companies would have
resources to access, share and analyse real world data for
individual conditions. In addition, several researchers
have found that the adoption of big data is projected to
touch USD 34.27 billion by 2022.
Blockchain to bring healthcare efficiencies
Blockchain Technology is expected to help in solving
security problems related to data exchange. Blockchain
has the tendency to provide faster access to big amount
of data that provides improved patient experience on real
time basis.
The other ways in which the technology is going to make
an impact on healthcare providers are by streamlining
and providing transparency in processes, eliminating
intermediaries wherever possible, providing a guard
against counterfeit drugs and reducing unnecessary
healthcare costs.
Cloud technology to change the healthcare scenario
Cloud Computing has already become necessary in
healthcare sector. Last few years marked the beginning
of Cloud Computing in healthcare industry. Many
hospitals are changing their everyday processes by
including electronic health records and digital paper
filling work.
Cloud Computing is set to evolve the way healthcare
industry works. It is going to provide the quickest and
easiest access to business applications and customer
relationship management. Moreover, it offers large
storage facility for clinical and non- clinical records with
an enhanced security environment.
Innovative Insurance models for preventive
healthcare
Insurance models play a crucial role in healthcare payer
industry. Undoubtedly, the healthcare insurance policies
that are available today do not meet the personalised
needs of an individual. To ensure better growth prospects
of the industry, companies are focusing on providing
personalised healthcare policies that are driven by data
and IoT to reduce potential claims.
S O C I A L M E D I A A N D W E L L N E S S
INDUSTRY
As per WHO there are more than 4 billion mobile phone
subscribers globally, two-thirds of them in developing
countries, with the fastest in Africa. This means that
people in developing parts of the world often have similar
levels of access to social media as those in industrialized
nations
Three billion people, around 40% of the world's
population, use online social media - and we're spending
an average of two hours every day sharing, liking,
tweeting and updating on these platforms, according to
some reports. That breaks down to around half a million
tweets and Snapchat photos shared every minute.
How does social media affect your mental health?
• Social media is more dangerous to young people's
mental health than alcohol or drugs.
• The negative effects of social media have been well
documented, with even Facebook executives admitting
that the platform may pose a risk to users' emotional
well-being.
THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS
• A number of studies have
found an association between
s o c i a l m e d i a u s e a n d
depression, anxiety, s leep
problems, eating issues, mental
health issues, eye problem, and
increased suicide risk, warn
researchers from the University
of Melbourne's National Centre
of Excellence in Youth Mental
Health, in an article on The
Conversation.
![Page 15: HEALTH WELLNESS MEDICAL VALUE TRAVEL › wp-content › uploads › 2019 › 08 › ... · and opportunities in this sector. The Ministry of AYUSH with a separate department for Yoga,](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070715/5ed81c55d9463e16115a25ad/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
• Another link has been made between sleep disruption
caused by excessive mobile phone use at night and
depression and unhappiness.
• A study published in The Lancet Psychiatry found people
who spend the night checking social media are more
likely to suffer from mood problems such as neuroticism
and bipolar disorder, and rate themselves as less happy
and more lonely.
• To counter this, Professor Daniel Smith, from the
University of Glasgow, who led the research, suggested a
10pm cut-off point for mobile use would give the average
adult time to wind down before switching off the lights.
THE POSITIVE EFFECTS
The same University of Missouri study that found a link
between Facebook use and depression also found that
people who use the platform primarily to connect with
others do not experience the negative effects. "In fact,
when not triggering feelings of envy, the study shows,
Facebook could be a good resource and have positive
effects on well-being.
There is also compelling evidence that social media can
benefit people already dealing with mental health issues
by helping them build online communities that provide a
source of emotional support.
Research suggests that the manner in which social media
is used is key to determining if it likely to have a positive or
negative impact on well-being. For example, active, as
opposed to passive, social media use can be beneficial,
say the Melbourne researchers. "Although browsing
Instagram has been associated with increased
depression, talking to others online increases life
satisfaction," they say.
Are children more affected than adults?
For young people, who spend on average far more time
than over-25s on social media, the problem appears even
more serious. The proportion of 12 to 15-year-olds who
reported having been bullied on social media has nearly
doubled from 6% to 11% since 2016.
Separate research published in the American Journal of
Preventive Medicine in 2017 examined whether young
people's use of 11 social media sites - Twitter, Google+,
YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Vine,
Snapchat, Facebook and Reddit - correlated with their
"perceived social isolation".
"Unsurprisingly, it turned out that the more time people
spent on these sites, the more socially isolated they
perceived themselves to be. And perceived social
isolation is one of the worst things for us, mentally and
physically," says Forbes.
In short, Internet and Social Media presents potential
benefits as well as new risks to individual users. The
effects of Internet on well-being largely depend on
individual personal characteristics, and in particular age,
capabilities, culture and beliefs. Hence, it is the
combination of individuals' online activities and their
own personal characteristics that explains why the use of
Internet has stronger positive effects for some
individuals and social groups than others
EIGHT DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS- FOR
STUDENTS, OFFICE AND WORK PLACE,
AND FAMILY LIFE
"Happiness," "wellness," "well-being", the terms get used
interchangeably but distinctions are emerging: wellness
connotes a state of overall health, while happiness is a
more perceptual concept - how people feel about and
experience their daily lives. There are eight dimensions of
wel lness : occupat ional , emot ional , sp i r i tua l ,
environmental, financial, physical, social, and intellectual.
Each dimension of wellness is interrelated with another.
Each dimension is equally vital in the pursuit of optimum
health. One can reach an optimal level of wellness by
understanding how to maintain and optimize each of the
dimensions of wellness.
• Emotional Wellness relates to understanding your
feelings and coping effectively with stress.
• Environmental Wellness inspires us to live a lifestyle
that is respectful of our surroundings..
• Financial Wellness involves the process of learning how
to successfully manage financial expenses.
• Intellectual Wellness involves having an open mind
when you encounter new ideas and continuing to expand
your knowledge.
• Occupational Wellness is about enjoying your
occupational endeavors and appreciating your
contributions. This dimension of wellness encourages
personal satisfaction and enrichment in one's life
through work.
• Physical Wellness relates to maintaining a healthy body
and seeking care when needed.
![Page 16: HEALTH WELLNESS MEDICAL VALUE TRAVEL › wp-content › uploads › 2019 › 08 › ... · and opportunities in this sector. The Ministry of AYUSH with a separate department for Yoga,](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070715/5ed81c55d9463e16115a25ad/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
• Social Wellness helps you perform social roles
effectively and comfortably, and create a support
network.
• Spiritual Wellness allows you to develop a set of values
that help you seek meaning and purpose.
KEY WELLNESS TREND ACROSS GLOBE
2019
As an increasing number of both business and leisure
traveler's value healthy food, fitness, and a mind-body
balance, the wellness tourism industry is only going to
develop further. Here's what to expect in 2019 and
beyond.
1. Hospitality hybrids
Five, ten-plus years ago, when wellness started ramping
up, first, every hotel needed a nice gym; then it was
having a spa that became standard; and now, we've
gotten very far beyond that. It's not just an amenity, but
wellness is integrated throughout the hotels.
One of the most recent and aggressive in this trend is
Hyatt, which acquired boutique fitness and wellness
brand, Exhale; as well as wellness resort and spa
operator, Miraval
Other hospitality brands have partnered with companies
in the fitness space, such as Westin Hotels with Peloton;
Fairmont Hotels and Technogym; Shangri-La and
Lululemon; and Mandarin Oriental Hotels and the Mayo
Clinic. Equinox, which runs 82 fitness clubs, will be
entering the luxury hotel sector with plans to open 50
locations worldwide.
2. Emerging destinations
Wellness travel can draw travelers to under-visited
regions, giving new destinations the opportunity to tap
into the growing business.
Wellness tourism growth is very much a tale of
developing markets, with Asia-Pacific, Latin America-
Caribbean, Middle East-North Africa, and sub-Saharan
Africa all clocking robust gains, and accounting for 57
percent of the increase in wellness trips since 2015. Over
the past five years, Asia is the number one growth sector
in both wellness tourism trips and revenues, where trips
grew 33 percent in two years, to 258 million annually.
3. Evolving the transportation sector
The shift over the last five years with airlines has been just
as big as the hospitality sector. Airports have been
rethinking infrastructure to include green spaces and
natural light. Additional airport wellness offerings on the
rise include: "silent airports," yoga rooms, in-transit
fitness clubs, therapy dogs, napping pods and suites,
treadmill desks, and designated terminal walking circuits.
In lounges, business and first-class travelers have access
to spa and mediation sessions and space for yoga.
Meanwhile, on the plane, menus are changing to include
healthier options. Some airlines are also experimenting
with circadian lighting to prevent jet lag.
In the future, there will be a lot more attention on the air
system, because recycled air is the main culprit causing
many travelers to return home with a cold.

4. Localizing treatments and experiences
For a more holistic wellness journey, travelers are
increasingly looking to connect with destinations through
nature and local traditions.
Many travelers are interested in what a specific place has
to offer.
![Page 17: HEALTH WELLNESS MEDICAL VALUE TRAVEL › wp-content › uploads › 2019 › 08 › ... · and opportunities in this sector. The Ministry of AYUSH with a separate department for Yoga,](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022070715/5ed81c55d9463e16115a25ad/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Parts of Asia offer ancient healing practices, such as
Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine. In Europe,
"some look to their bathing traditions; for example,
Finnish saunas, Austrian sauna aufguss, and Russia
banya .There is also surging interest in Nordic lifestyle
concepts such as hygge ("cozy" for the Danish and
Norwegians) and lagom ("balanced" or "just right" for the
Swedish), which can be incorporated into facility design,
g u e s t ex p e r i e n c e s , w e l l n e s s o ff e r i n g s , a n d
marketing/promotion.
There is also more demand to combine activities in
nature with wellness modalities, such as hiking to a scenic
location for meditation, or doing yoga or tai chi in an
outdoor setting.
5. Medical and Wellness Tourism Merges
Medical tourism has been big for quite some time, with
travellers crossing international borders either for better
or cheaper medical treatment. Some hospitals with a
focus on medical tourism now have patient rooms that
don't look that much different from a regular hotel room.
At the same time, wellness resorts, which previously
focused mostly on traditional wellness practices such as
spa treatments, thermal bathing, yoga and traditional
Chinese medicine, are getting more high-tech. At many
modern wellness resorts, expect to undergo a battery of
medical tests - from blood analysis to ultrasound scans
and even DNA testing. Following comprehensive
assessment, specialists will develop a completely
personalised treatment programme for guests.
6. From digital detox to high-tech wellness
A rapidly advancing space, tech companies are actively
entering the wellness sector, seeking ways to marry the
two industries which until now have mostly been argued
to be best kept mutually exclusive. Apple reports that
mental wellness/mindfulness was the No. 1 app trend of
2018, and Peloton has revolutionized the at-home gym
with workouts streamed live and completely on-demand,
while advanced skincare treatments such as micro
current facials can now be enjoyed without leaving your
couch.
7. Greater Variety in Wellness Retreats
Wellness retreats have been a key aspect of wellness
travel. The traditional focus has been on yoga and
meditation. However, as the wellness travel market has
grown, wellness retreats are now offering much greater
variety getting highly specific in their focus. There are
career-focused wellness retreats ,business-focused
wellness retreats, women's only wellness retreats,
wellness retreats catering to issues faced by men, and
wellness retreats that also combine cultural activities
such as writing, pottery, music, performance and
cooking.
As the wellness travel market grows, variety and greater
sophistication will become a constant trend. Those in the
travel industry need to keep a close eye on major
developments if they hope to stay ahead of the
competition and meet the needs of wellness travellers.
8. Ketogenic Diet
Despite the issues regarding consumption of fatty food,
people are taking up the ketogenic diet in order to fight
diseases like epilepsy. The diet is based on low
carbohydrate yet high-fat content. Its benefits are:
1. Killing your appetite via a healthy way
2. Aids in weight loss programs
3. Reducing harmful fat and adding essential fats such as
visceral fat and subcutaneous fat
4. Levels down triglycerides in the blood
5. Increasing the concentration of HDL or good
cholesterol that aids in fighting cardiovascular diseases.
6. Blood sugar level reduced thus helping in Diabetes
Type II cases
7. Aids in the treatment of metabolic syndrome
9. Athleisure
This is a typical trend where people are taking up clothes
that are comfortable to wear. The clothes can be worn
when one is going to the gym and or while going to the
office. The word is the hybridized result of two words
Leisure and Athletics.
10. Acroyoga
Like the above fusion, Acroyoga is the result of
hybridization between Yoga and Acrobatics. Performing
such art is really catching up with the crowd, but it is
tougher than conventional acrobatics and asanas
involved in Yoga.
