vibrant as we are today. This failure of imagination drives us to shirk our responsibilities to our bodies; to maintain a decent weight, to eat fruits and vegetables, and to exercise regularly. In this issue of The Good Neighbor Magazine we tackle these issues head on. The articles in this issue explore ways you can change and start building healthy habits today!

Our first article, by Dr. Ernest F. Patti of St. Barnabas Hospital, discusses the importance of health screenings as a pre-ventative tool. Time and time, again we hear of someone whose illness was not caught in time. Screenings help you avoid that. See our Calendar of Events for Good Neighbor Health Fairs offering free health screenings. Our second ar-ticle looks into what exercise and diet can do for you if you incorporate it into your life. Our last article, by personal trainer Catherine Andrews, explores health in general. You don’t need to be an elite athlete to stay healthy. Simply adopting a holistic, healthy lifestyle of diet, exercise, the article advises, can keep you on the right track.

We hope you enjoy our Health and Wellness issue, and that you think about adopting at least some of the ideas discussed in our articles n

Health is important! We sometimes forget that. And so we skip our daily exercises; forget to track our caloric intake; forego that visit to the doctor and eat that extra slice of pizza. But we make these oversights at our own peril. They catch up with us.

It’s not difficult to understand the vital role health plays in our lives. Without good health we can’t work, can’t feel good, can’t provide for our families. Our health depends on our moods, our desire to work and our ability to carry out activities important to us. Health is, in short, an in-dispensable part of living. With it everything is possible, without it very little is. Again, we all understand this. But the problem is we can’t imagine it. While we realize good health is important, we fail to imagine our lives without it. We simply refuse to see ourselves with heart disease, type two diabetes, cancers or any other debilitating disease. After all, if we’ve never experienced a major illness, why would we imagine ourselves with one. We imagine that we will always be as active and as

RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY AND NEIGHBORHOOD

Preventative health screenings are designed to find dis-

eases before any symptoms become obvious. The goal is

to find diseases early when they are easier to control, treat

and cure. Some screening tests can be done in your doc-

tor’s office, while others may require specialized diagnostic

equipment found in hospitals or other specialty clinics.

The tests that you need to receive are determined by a

number of factors, which usually include your

personal risk factors, family history, age, and whether

you are male or female. Upon completion of any

screening exams, you should be informed when you

can expect to receive results, and from whom you can

expect answers to your questions and concerns.

For adult men and women most doctors will recom-

mend the following as essential screening tests:

l Cholesterol (Lipid Panel)

lColorectal Cancer

lDiabetes

l Hypertension

lObesity Screen-BMI (Body Mass Index)

lAdult Immunization Schedule (Flu,

Pneumococcal Vaccine, HPV, Varicella, DPT

RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY AND NEIGHBORHOOD

For women most doctors will recommend the following as essential screening tests: l Breast Cancer Screening l Cervical Cancer Screening-PAP Screen, HPV Testing (Human Papilloma Virus) l Osteoporosis l Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)

Most doctors will recommend a prostate cancer screening for men as an essential screening test. Another important screening for everyone is a skin cancer screening, when lumps, bumps or lesions are present.

There are other recommendations for children and adolescents as well. Please discuss this with your doctor for further information.

Today, many people feel that sometimes it is better to not know something is wrong, in the hope that ignor-ing it will make it go away. However, we know that it is ALWAYS better to catch things early in order to nip them in the bud. This is particularly true when it comes to the early detection of chronic diseases. Many are very difficult to reverse or treat properly if caught in their late stages. While if caught in early stages many can be cured successfully. Knowing your family medical his-tory and what risk factors you have will allow you to take charge of your health and help you stay healthy! Always remember how lucky we are to have these preventive health screening tests. Taking advantage of them may just one day save your life n

Incorporating various forms of exercise into your routine will keep workouts fresh, prevent injury and maximize your results. Regardless of the person or goal, everyone can benefit from cross training. When I develop training programs for clients they all include the four basic exercise categories: endurance, strength, balance and flexibility.

Endurance or aerobic activities increase your breathing and heart rate. They keep your heart, lungs and circulatory system healthy and improve your overall fitness. Brisk walking, jogging, dancing and sports that elevate your heart rate are considered endurance activities.

Strength exercises, resistance training or strength

training can be found in many forms. Lifting weights, using a resistance bands or a TRX system (total body resistance training) are some of my favorite strength training methods. Strength training makes your muscles stronger and the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn, even when you’re not working out.

Bike riding is a great exercise, wether you are young or in your golden years.

The Power ofExercise

Balance exercises increase core stability and strength

which can alleviate back pain, improve posture,

increase athletic performance and make everyday

activities safer. Pilates classes are a great, safe way to

increase core strength and stability.

Flexibility is one of the most important and often

overlooked exercises. Stretching your muscles not

only helps you stay limber, but also facilitates better

mobility for other forms of exercising. Being flexible

decreases the risk of injury and provides more range

of motion for everyday activities. Yoga is considered

a popular form of flexibility training and offers many

classes, ranging from vigorous vinyasa practices to

more restorative yin practices.

Regular exercise in any form can reduce stress. It

also boosts circulation, helping to detoxify the body

by removing toxins and increasing blood flow. The

fact is that the better shape you’re in, the better your

body will function.

According to the Center for Disease Control, in the

United States the percentage of obese children ages

6–11 has increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in

2012. Similarly, the percentage of obese adolescents

ages 12–19 has ballooned from 5% to nearly 21% over

the same period (www.cdc.com; child obesity facts).

These numbers show us that nutritional education

classes in schools need to be more prevalent to

help the young recognize the links between diet and

health.

Eating is required to fuel the body and get it the

nutrients it needs, not merely a matter of eating

because the clock says it’s time. What we eat is just

as important as what we don’t eat. Our diet needs to

be high in healthful carbs like fruits, vegetables and

whole grains. A good rule of thumb is to consume

foods in their natural state. The more processed the

food is, the fewer nutrients the body receives from

them. A well-balanced diet that offers consistent

nutrition is often rightly credited with extending life

and lowering the chances of disease. On the other

hand, a poor diet can drastically cut life span and

subject a person to a wide range of chronic diseases.

As caregivers and guardians, it is our job to

monitor the types of foods children have access to.

Small steps such as eating together can foster an

environment where a healthy relationship with food develops through time n

Under a cloudy sky and a mixture of neighborhood fans, parents, organizers and corporate sponsors, the Good Neighbor Little League Kickoff got under way this past May 26th at Macombs Dam Park’s Heritage Field. The field, located on 161 Street and River Avenue, is just steps away from Yankee Stadium.

White Rose president, Joseph Fantozzi, threw the opening pitch. And under a partly cloudy Saturday morning, beginning to give way to sunshine, the little leaguers began playing their first inning. At street level, stationed under corporate tents, sponsoring vendors doled out free samples of their products to the public. Kelloggs, General Mills, Skim Plus, Bustelo, Post, Unilever and Nestlé were all present.

Meanwhile at field level, Little League organizers Rolando Paulino and Peggy Guzman prepare and coach their players. New York Yankees representative and former player, Jennifer Hanson and Roy White, address and welcome the leagues to the field. Then the masters of ceremony thank participating corporate sponsors and officials from distributor White Rose, the major sponsor of the event.

The 2014 Little League Kickoff marks the first year the event takes place under White Rose sponsorship for the two leagues. Both the Rolando Paulino and Raiders organizations

are based in the Bronx. White Rose sponsorship of this type of community activity is exemplary of the distributor’s commitment to partnering with community-based organizations.

Little LeagueKickoff!

After the Little League Kickoff, many of the participants continued the day’s activities by attending the New York Yankee’s game that afternoon. The Bombers faced the Tampa Bay Rays. Before the game the Yankees presented their customary Home Plate Ceremony, where the organization honors individuals who have positively impacted their community. Honorees at this ceremony were Good Neighbor participating sponsors, Ken Scher from Unilever, Michael Brockway from Kellogg’s, Jay Bern from Farmland and Ernie Matias from General Mills n

The Good Neighbor program is now a corporate sponsors

of the New York Yankee’s Healthy Home Plate Program. The

program, opened to community youth, ages 12-15, provides

instruction on the preparation of affordable and healthy

meals. The lessons are hands-on and interactive, instructed

by nutritionists from Nourishing NYC, an organization that

helps bring nutritional education to New York inner city com-

munities.

The students are taught about nutrition and the affordability

and preparation of healthy meals. At the end of the program

the participant’s efforts are showcased during a pre-game

ceremony at Yankee Stadium, in recognition of their partici-

pation and completion of the program.

The aim of Healthy Home Plate is to provide participants with

the knowledge as well as ability to prepare affordable and

healthy meals. Additionally, it strives to engage their fami-

lies, friends as well as members of the surrounding communi-

ties, in an effort to promote healthy lifestyles for all involved.

Obesity affects approximately 17% (12.5 million) of all chil-

dren and adolescents, ages 2 - 19, in the United States

(Carroll, Margaret, M.S.P.H. and Ogden, Cynthia, Ph.D.).

According to the New York City Department of Health, Bronx

youth are leading the nation in childhood obesity and related

ailments, such as Type 2 Diabetes and asthma. The Healthy

Home Plate Program was established in 2011 to address the

conditions within this local community. The Program was

with a focus on four goals:

1. Promote healthy lifestyle initiatives

2. Provide nutritional information to underserved youth in

the community

3. Educate local youth on the benefits of eating healthy

4. Demonstrate how to prepare easy, affordable and

healthy meals

On May 18, 2012, the Healthy Home Plate Program com-

bined efforts with celebrity chef and activist, Jamie Oliver,

to

celebrate Food Revolution Day, which aims to get thousands

of kids across America eating healthy. The New York Yan-

kees, five Chefs from Legends Hospitality, and Nourishing

USA worked in conjunction with Chef Jamie to hosted a

Healthy Home Plate Program for students from The Bronx

School for Law, Government and Justice.

Chef Jamie participated in the cooking demonstration with

Yankees Sous Chefs, preparing the EggO-Mega Starter

Sandwich - a healthy alternative to fast food breakfast,

and talked about the importance of a healthy breakfast for

growing adolescents. “When an organization like the Yan-

kees reaches out to the community in an effort to educate

kids about eating healthy foods, it’s a big step in the right

direction,” said Oliver.

The Good Neighbor program is proud to be part of this

effort and plans to continue involvement with it going

forward. Proper nutrition and the ability to prepare meals

using fresh ingredients are key to maintaining a healthy life-

style. An effort like this is something the Good Neighbor

program is all about. Good luck to all the young participants!

RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY AND NEIGHBORHOOD

NEW! NEW!

Take a moment and ask yourself, “What is the most important thing in my life?” Is it Money? Success? If the first thing that came to your mind was something other than your health, you are not alone. Most of us don’t consider health a priority and are more likely to think of a prized possession as being more important than health. But ask yourself, “Will any of these possessions give you a longer, healthier life?” Looked at from this perspective, your answer may tend to change a bit.

Unlike most people, as a personal trainer, pilates and yoga instructor, my life revolves around health issues. Personally, if I am not healthy, I lose the ability to function normally. I can’t work as much or earn as much money as I otherwise would. Most importantly, I cannot enjoy living my life!

When I am critiqued about the foods I eat or, for that matter, those I chose not to eat, I take

refuge in remembering how the activities of taking care of my health make me feel. Prioritizing my health makes me more alert and allows me to help others. It makes me a better person.

I, like millions of other Americans, have a bad history of family health issues which include heart disease, cancer, stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes. Because I chose to make healthy decisions and place a priority on my health, I take no medications, my heart rate is excellent and I maintain a healthy weight. Making healthy decisions isn’t always convenient but it’s more important to me than a temporary indulgence.

To me, there is nothing worse than losing the ability to physically function. The first thing I think about when I wake up is what I can do that day, not what my limitations are. So, ask yourself again, “What is the most important thing in my life?” The right answer is your health. With good health you can do anything! n

simple as taking a walk in the park or as involved as lifting weights.
