Positive COVID Cases in SchoolsHow should the school expect to find out that a student or staff member has tested positive for COVID-19?

Schools will trigger a priority response from DPH and will contact the school nurse within 24 hours of receiving notification of a positive result.

DPH will identify the COVID-positive staff member or student and work with the school nurse and the positive individual to identify any close contacts that need to be quarantined.

The school nurse may only disclose the name of the positive individual for the purposes of assisting with contact tracing.

For instance, if a young student tests positive, he or she may need a teacher’s assistance in identifying close contacts.

We ask that parents and staff contact the school if they learn they are positive since this can expedite the implementation of appropriate infectious control actions.

If the school learns of the case before hearing from DPH, the School Nurse will contact DPH epidemiology

ALL positive cases require DPH clearance before returning to school and work

COVID Positive Case NotificationHow will staff and the community be informed? After the initial investigation process by the School Nurse , in collaboration with

DPH:

The Nurse in coordination with COVID coordinator and administration (HR)will notify those needing immediate quarantine.

Administration(Principal) will notify the families and staff of a positive case in the building.

The School Nurse will keep the district Co-Leads in the loop for communication and consistency.

Clearance dates and note from DPH is required for those in quarantine due to direct contact and positive cases for both staff and students.

Privacy will be maintained following HIPAA regulations.

The district has a DPH COVID liaison assigned that the nurses have direct contact with for questions and guidance. There is also an epidemiologist on call( 24 hours) for our consultation.

Staff and Families are encouraged to call the School Nurse immediately with notification of a positive COVID test.
