Suitability of location

• does the site meet the film’s aesthetic requirements?

• can you control the site sufficiently?

• can you use several areas for different scenes?


Suitability of location

• easily accessible for crew and cast?

• safe parking for vehicles?

• safe storage for valuable equipment?

• good working lighting for all areas?


Permission to film

• you must have permission to film from the owner or person/company responsible

• you need to explain exactly what you intend to do and when

• have they signed a release form?


Risk assessmentits a legal requirement

The 5 steps:

1. Identify the hazards

2. Decide who might be harmed and how

3. Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions

4. Record your findings and implement precautions

5. Review your assessment and update if necessary


Risk assessmentthe basic terms

• a hazard = anything that might cause harm

• a risk = the chance (high or low) of someone getting harmed

• seek advise if you’re unsure

• consider long term hazards to health as well

If you know the hazard and the people at risk of harm you must manage the risk

• who’s at most risk?

• identify how they might be harmed

precautions

(avoid/control/minimise risk)

• do something less hazardous

• contain and reduce the hazard

• limit exposure to hazard

• use protective equipment

• provide welfare facilities

Show:

• a proper check has been made

• you have asked who might be affected

• you have dealt with all significant hazards

• the precautions are reasonable and risks low

• you have made others aware

things change quickly on location so:

• respond to changes to the planned activity

• update your risk assessment
