Psalm 67:1-2God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause

his face to shine upon us; Selah. That thy way may

be known upon earth, thy saving health among all

nations.

The work of redemption is to restore man into the image of his Maker. It is to bring him back to the perfection in which he was created and to promote the development of body, mind and soul, that the divine purpose in his creation is to be realized. In order for this to be accomplished, every power of mind, soul and body must be understood and used aright.

Page 8: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

But the plan of redemption had a yet broader and deeper purpose than the salvation of man. It was not for this alone that Christ came to

the earth; it was not merely that the inhabitants of this little world might regard the law of God as it should be regarded; but it was{PP 68.2} 2 of 3

to vindicate the character of God before the universe.”

The Saviour came to glorify the Father by the demonstration of His love; so the Spirit was to glorify Christ by revealing His grace to the world. The very image of God is to be reproduced in humanity. The honor of God, the honor of Christ, is involved in the perfection of the character of His people. Desire of ages page 671

the human soul of the image of God. From the first intimation of hope in

the sentence pronounced in Eden to that last glorious promise of the

Revelation, 'They shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads' (Revelation 22:4),

When Adam came from the Creator's hand, he bore, in his physical, mental, and spiritual nature, a likeness to his Maker. "God created man in His own image" (Genesis 1:27), and it was His purpose that the longer man lived the more fully he should reveal this {Ed 15.1}

Page 18: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

All his faculties were capable of development; their capacity and vigor were continually to increase. Vast was the scope offered for their exercise, glorious the field opened to their research. The mysteries of the visible universe--the "wondrous works of Him which is perfect in knowledge" (Job 37:16)--invited man's study.{Ed 15.1}

Page 19: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Face-to-face, heart-to-heart communion with his Maker was his high privilege. Had he remained loyal to God, all this would have been his forever. {Ed 15.1}

Page 20: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Throughout eternal ages he would have continued to gain new treasures of knowledge, to discover fresh springs of happiness, and to obtain clearer and yet clearer conceptions of the wisdom, the power, and the love of God. {Ed 15.1}

Page 21: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

More and more fully would he have fulfilled the object of his creation, more and more fully have reflected the Creator's glory. {Ed 15.1}

But by disobedience this was forfeited. Through sin the divine likeness was marred, and well-nigh obliterated. Man's physical powers were weakened, his mental capacity was lessened, his spiritual vision dimmed. He had become subject to death. Yet the race was not left without hope. {Ed 15.2}

Page 24: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

By infinite love and mercy the plan of salvation had been devised, and a life of probation was granted. To restore in man the image of his Maker, to bring him back to the perfection in which he was created, to promote the development of body, mind, and soul, that the divine purpose in his creation might be realized--this was to be the work of redemption. This is the object of education, the great object of life. {Ed 15.2}

In the Garden of Eden, sin had broken the face-to-face relationship between God and humanity. Sin forfeited our first parents’ unhindered communion with God. However, the Creator still desired to draw us to Himself and to enjoy a deep covenant relationship with fallen humanity, and He began this process right there in Eden. Lessons From the Sanctuary, page 30

Page 27: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Centuries later, in saving Israel out of Egypt and establishing the

sanctuary and the sacrificial system, God again took the initiative in bringing humanity back into His presence.Lessons From the Sanctuary, page 30

Page 28: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

The sanctuary thus testifies of God’s unceasing desire to dwell among His people. This is God’s idea (Ps. 132:13-14). His ultimate goal is relationship, and the sanctuary was His chosen means to do it. The sanctuary is the tangible evidence of God’s presence with His people on earth.Lessons From the Sanctuary, page 30

"The temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in His temple the ark of his testament" (Revelation 11:19). The ark of God's testament is in the Holy of Holies, the second apartment of the sanctuary.

Page 31: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

In the ministration of the earthly tabernacle, which served "unto the example and shadow of heavenly things," this apartment was opened only upon the great Day of Atonement for the cleansing of the sanctuary.

Page 32: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Therefore the announcement that the temple of God was opened in heaven and the ark of His testament was seen points to the opening of the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary in 1844 as Christ entered there to perform the closing work of the atonement. {LHU 136.2}

"Christ is cleansing the temple in heaven from the sins of the people, and we must work in harmony with him upon the earth, cleansing the soul temple from its moral defilement" (Review and Herald., February 11, 1890).

“Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own diligent effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the investigative judgment is going forward in heaven, while the sins of penitent believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of putting away of sin, among God's people upon earth. This work is more clearly presented in the messages of Revelation 14.”-GC, pg.425

"The finishing of this work... for the sanctuary was likewise the finishing of the work for the people... The cleansing of the sanctuary extended to the people, and included the people, as truly as it did the sanctuary itself... .The finishing of the mystery of God is the ending of the work of the gospel..

the taking away of all vestige of sin and the bringing in of everlasting righteousness--Christ fully formed--within each believer, God alone manifest in the flesh of each believer in Jesus... In the sanctuary itself, transgression could not be finished, an end of sins and reconciliation for iniquity could not be made... until all this had been accomplished in each person who had a part in the service of the sanctuary....

Page 41: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Ellet J. Waggoner(1855 – 1916)

The Consecrated Way, pp. 113-19

The sanctuary itself could not be cleansed so long as, by the confessions of the people and the intercessions of the priests, there was pouring into the sanctuary a stream of iniquities, transgressions, and sins... This stream must be stopped at its fountain in the hearts and lives of the worshipers, before the sanctuary itself could possibly be cleansed.

Page 42: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Ellet J. Waggoner(1855 – 1916)

The Consecrated Way, pp. 113-19

Therefore the very first work in the cleansing of the sanctuary was the cleansing of the people. The sacrifice, the priesthood, and the ministry of Christ in the true sanctuary does take away sins forever, does make the comers thereunto perfect, does perfect "forever them that are sanctified."

The health reform, I was shown, is a part of the third angel's message, and is just as closely connected with it as are the arm and hand with the human body. I

saw that we as a people must make an advance move in this great work.

Ministers and people must act in concert. God's people are not prepared for the loud cry of the third angel. They have a

In order to be fitted for translation, the people of God must know themselves. They must understand in regard to their own physical frames, that they may be able with the psalmist to exclaim, "I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." They should ever have the appetite in subjection to the moral and intellectual organs. The body should be servant to the mind, and not the mind to the body. {CD 33.1}

“All who would perfect holiness in the fear of God must learn the lessons of temperance and self–control. The appetites and passions must be held in subjection to the higher powers of the mind. This self–discipline is essential to that mental strength and spiritual insight which will enable us to understand and to practice the sacred truths of God’s word. Preparation for the Refreshing

Preparation for the Refreshing

God requires His people to cleanse themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of the Lord. All those who are indifferent and excuse themselves from this work, waiting for the Lord to do for them that which He requires them to do for themselves, will be found wanting when the meek of the earth, who have wrought His judgments, are hid in the day of the Lord's anger. {CD 33.2}

Page 75: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

I was shown that if God's people make no efforts on their part, but wait for the refreshing to come

upon them and remove their wrongs and correct their errors; if they depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness of the flesh

and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry of the third angel, they

will be found wanting. {CD 33.3}

Page 76: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

The refreshing or power of God comes only on those who have prepared themselves for it by

doing the work which God bids them, namely, cleansing

themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting

holiness in the fear of God. {CD 33.3}

The health reform is a branch of the special work of God for the benefit of His people. . . . {CD 25.4} I saw that the reason why God did not hear the prayers of His servants for the sick among us more fully was, that He could not be glorified in so doing while they were violating the laws of health. And I also saw that He designed the health reform and Health Institute to prepare the way for the prayer of faith to be fully answered. Faith and good works should go hand in hand in relieving the afflicted among us, and in fitting them to glorify God here, and to be saved at the coming of Christ. {CD 25.5}

Page 80: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Many have expected that God would keep them from sickness merely because they have asked Him to do so. But God did not regard their prayers, because their faith was not made perfect by works. God will not work a miracle to keep those from sickness who have no care for themselves, but are continually violating the laws of health, and make no efforts to prevent disease. {CD 26.1}

Page 81: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

When we do all we can on our part to have health, then may we expect that the blessed results will follow, and we can ask God in faith to bless our efforts for the preservation of health. He will then answer our prayer, if His name can be glorified thereby. But let all understand that they have a work to do. God will not work in a miraculous manner to preserve the health of persons who are taking a sure course to make themselves sick, by their careless inattention to the laws of health. {CD 26.1}

Page 82: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Those who will gratify their appetite, and then suffer because of their intemperance, and take drugs to relieve them, may be assured that God will not interpose to save health and life which is so recklessly periled. The cause has produced the effect.

Page 83: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Many, as their last resort, follow the directions in the word of God, and request the prayers of the elders of the church for their restoration to health. God does not see fit to answer prayers offered in behalf of such, for He knows that if they should be restored to health, they would again sacrifice it upon the altar of unhealthy appetite.

R. & H., Feb. 10, 1910 38. It is of great importance that individually we act well our part, and have an intelligent understanding of what we should eat and drink, and how we should live to preserve health. All are being proved to see whether they will accept the principles of health reform or follow a course of self-indulgence. {CD 34.3}

Page 85: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Let no one think that he can do as he pleases in the matter of diet. But before all who sit at the table with you, let it appear that you follow principle in the matter of eating, as in all other matters, that the glory of God may be revealed. You cannot afford to do otherwise; for you have a character to form for the future immortal life. Great responsibilities rest upon every human soul. Let us comprehend these responsibilities, and bear them nobly in the name of the Lord. {CD 34.4}

Page 86: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

To every one who is tempted to indulge appetite I would say, Yield not to temptation, but confine yourself to the use of wholesome foods. You can train yourself to enjoy a healthful diet. The Lord helps those who seek to help themselves; but when men will not take special pains to follow out the mind and will of God, how can He work with them? Let us act our part, working out our salvation with fear and trembling,--with fear and trembling lest we make mistakes in the treatment of our bodies, which, before God, we are under obligation to keep in the most healthy condition possible. {CD 35.1}

Page 87: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

God is raising up a class to give the loud cry of the third angel's message. . . . It is Satan's object now to get up new theories to divert the mind from the true work and genuine message for this time. He stirs up minds to give false interpretation of Scripture, a spurious loud cry, that the real message may not have its effect when it does come. This is one of the greatest evidences that the loud cry will soon be heard and the earth will be lightened with the glory of God.--Letter 20, 1884. {3SM 410.1}

(1867) 1T 546 45. Said the angel, "Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul." You have stumbled at the health reform. It appears to you to be a needless appendix to the truth. It is not so; it is a part of the truth. Here is a work before you which will come closer and be more trying than anything which has yet been brought to bear upon you. While you hesitate and stand back, failing to lay hold upon the blessing which it is your privilege to receive, you suffer loss. You are stumbling over the very blessing which heaven has placed in your path to make progress less difficult. Satan presents this before you in the most objectionable light, that you may combat that which would prove the greatest benefit to you, which would be for your physical and spiritual health.

1st Duty – Self Development

• Our first duty toward God and our fellow beings is that of self-development. Every faculty with which the Creator has endowed us should be cultivated to the highest degree of perfection, that we may be able to do the greatest amount of good of which we are capable.

• A large proportion of all the infirmities that afflict the human family, are the results of their own wrong habits, because of their willing ignorance, or of their disregard of the light which God has given in relation to the laws of their being. It is not possible for us to glorify God while living in violation of the laws of life.

PERFECTION OF CHARACTER

• The apostle understood the importance of the healthful conditions of the body for the successful perfection of Christian character. He says, "I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." He mentions the fruit of the Spirit, among which is temperance. "They that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." Health Reformer, March, 1878

Between the mind and the body there is a mysterious and wonderful relation. They react upon each other. To keep the body in a healthy condition to develop its strength, that every part of the living machinery may act harmoniously, should be the first study of our life. To neglect the body is to neglect the mind. {3T 485.3}

The more perfect the circulation, the better will this work be accomplished.

Disease Definition

Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from the violation of the laws of health. (PATH p. 37)

Page 126: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

What are the Laws of Health

Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power

these are the true remedies. (MH p. 44)

Page 127: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

The first thing to be done is to ascertain the true character of the sickness and then go to work intelligently to remove the cause. (PATH p. 74 / MH p. 94)

If the harmonious working of the system has become unbalanced by overwork, overeating, or other irregularities, do not endeavor to adjust the difficulties by adding a burden of poisonous medicines. (PATH p. 74 / MH p. 94)

Page 128: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

In the case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained,

unhealthful conditions should be changed,

wrong habits corrected,then nature is to be assisted in her effort

to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in the system. (MH p. 44)

What should one do if they get sick?

Page 129: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

The use of natural remedies requires an

amount of care and effort that many are not

willing to give. Nature's process of healing

and upbuilding is gradual, and to the

impatient it seems slow. The surrender of

hurtful indulgences requires sacrifice. (MH p. 44)

Do Drugs Cure Disease?

If the harmonious working of the system has

become unbalanced by overwork,

overeating or other irregularities do not

endeavor to adjust the difficulties by adding

a burden of poisonous medicines. (PATH p. 74 / MH p. 94)

Page 132: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Too little attention is generally given to the

preservation of health.

It is far better to prevent disease than to know how

to treat it when contracted. (MH p. 128)

By the use of poisonous drugs, many bring upon

themselves lifelong illness, and many lives are lost

that might be saved by the use of natural methods

of healing. (MH p. 128)

Page 133: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

Drugs never cure disease;

they only change its form and

location. . . . When drugs are introduced

into the system, for a time they seem to

have a beneficial effect. A change may

take place, but the disease is not cured. It

will manifest itself in some other form. . . .

Page 134: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

The disease which the drug was given to cure

may disappear, but only to reappear in a new

form, such as skin diseases, ulcers, painful,

diseased joints, and sometimes in a more

dangerous and deadly form. . . . Nature keeps

struggling, and the patient suffers with different

ailments, until there is a sudden breaking down

in her efforts, and death follows.– (HL 243.3)

Noah, Daniel, and JobThe "time of trouble, such as never was," is soon to open upon us; and we shall need an experience which we do not now possess and which many are too indolent to obtain. It is often the case that trouble is greater in anticipation than in reality; but this is not true of the crisis before us. The most vivid presentation cannot reach the magnitude of the ordeal. In that time of trial, every soul must stand for himself before God. As men multiplied upon the face of the earth after the flood, they forgot God, and corrupted their ways before Him. Intemperance in every form increased to a great extent. “Our habits of eating and drinking show whether we are of the world or among the number whom the Lord by His mighty cleaver of truth has separated from the world. These are His peculiar people, zealous of good works. . . . God has spoken in the history of the children of Israel, from whom for their good He sought to withhold a flesh diet” (CD 379; 6T 372).

God has called His church in this day, as He called ancient Israel, to stand as a light in the earth. By the mighty cleaver of truth, the messages of the first, second, and third angels, He has separated them from the churches and from the world to bring them into a sacred nearness to Himself. He has made them the depositaries of His law and has committed to them the great truths of prophecy for this time. Like the holy oracles committed to ancient Israel, these are a sacred trust to be communicated to the world. The three angels of Revelation 14 5T 455.2

He purposed in his heart that he would not drink of the king’s wine or eat of his dainties. Job- Third Angels MessageJob 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. Job 1:2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. Job 1:4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. Job 1:5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

James 5:11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

Page 177: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

THE IMPOSSIBLE

• It is impossible for those who give the reins to appetite to attain to Christian perfection. The moral sensibilities of your children cannot be easily aroused, unless you are careful in the selection of their food. Many a mother sets a table that is a snare to her family. Flesh meats, butter, cheese, rich pastry, spiced foods, and condiments are freely partaken of by both old and young. These things do their work in deranging the stomach, exciting the nerves, and enfeebling the intellect. The blood-making organs cannot convert such things into good blood. The grease cooked in the food renders it difficult of digestion. The effect of cheese is deleterious. Fine-flour bread does not impart to the system the nourishment that is to be found in unbolted-wheat bread. Its common use will not keep the system in the best condition. Spices at first irritate the tender coating of the stomach, but finally destroy the natural sensitiveness of this delicate membrane. The blood becomes fevered, the animal propensities are aroused, while the moral and intellectual powers are weakened, and become servants to the baser passions. The mother should study to set a simple yet nutritious diet before her family. {CD 236.2}

• (1890) C.T.B.H. 53 • It is as truly a sin to violate the laws of our being as it is to

break the ten commandments. To do either is to break God's laws. Those who transgress the law of God in their physical organism, will be inclined to violate the law of God spoken from Sinai.

Page 179: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

MORAL FITNESS• You need clear, energetic minds, in order to appreciate the exalted

character of the truth, to value the atonement, and to place the right estimate upon eternal things. If you pursue a wrong course, and indulge in wrong habits of eating, and thereby weaken the intellectual powers, you will not place that high estimate upon salvation and eternal life which will inspire you to conform your life to the life of Christ; you will not make those earnest, self-sacrificing efforts for entire conformity to the will of God, which His word requires and which are necessary to give you a moral fitness for the finishing touch of immortality. {CD 47.1}

Erroneous Eating Leads to Erroneous Thinking

• The health of the body is to be regarded as essential for growth in grace and the acquirement of an even temper. If the stomach is not properly cared for, the formation of an upright, moral character will be hindered. The brain and nerves are in sympathy with the stomach. Erroneous eating and drinking result in erroneous thinking and acting.--9T 160 (1909). {2MCP 392.2}

IMPROPER DIET LEADS TO ADULTERY

• If all who profess to obey the law of God were free from iniquity, my soul would be relieved; but they are not. Even some who profess to keep all the commandments of God are guilty of the sin of adultery. What can I say to arouse their benumbed sensibilities? Moral principle, strictly carried out, becomes the only safeguard of the soul. If ever there was a time when the diet should be of the most simple kind, it is now. Meat should not be placed before our children. Its influence is to excite and strengthen the lower passions, and has a tendency to deaden the moral powers. Grains and fruits prepared free from grease, and in as natural a condition as possible, should be the food for the tables of all who claim to be preparing for translation to heaven. The less feverish the diet, the more easily can the passions be controlled. Gratification of taste should not be consulted irrespective of physical, intellectual, or moral health. {CD 63.3}

Page 185: Health Reform and Preparing For The Final Crisis

TRANSLATION

• Among those who are waiting for the coming of the Lord, meat eating will eventually be done away; flesh will cease to form a part of their diet. We should ever keep this end in view, and endeavor to work steadily toward it. I cannot think that in the practice of flesh eating we are in harmony with the light which God has been pleased to give us. All who are connected with our health institutions especially should be educating themselves to subsist on fruits, grains, and vegetables. If we move from principle in these things, if we as Christian reformers educate our own taste, and bring our diet to God's plan, then we may exert an influence upon others in this matter, which will be pleasing to God. {CD 380.4}

FAR AHEAD

• There is a much greater work upon us than we as yet have any idea of, if we would insure health by placing ourselves in the right relation to life. . . . The peculiar people whom God is purifying unto himself, to be translated to heaven without seeing death, should not be behind others in good works. In their efforts to cleanse themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God, they should be as far ahead of any other class of people on the earth as their profession is more exalted than that of others.--T., V. I, p. 487. {HL 69.5}
