THE QUESTIONHow do poor nutritional
choices affect the health and academic performance of
IA students?
WHY?As IA students we always want
to find way to improve our grades and we want to improve
our grades.
THE RESEARCH Being well hydrated, eating breakfast and eating
healthy snacks = success Scientists’ survey: students who ate fast food did about 15 points, or
worst, on a given exam. Avon Longitudinal study of Parents and Children did an experiment. They took a few 3 year olds and gave half of them
junk food daily for about 3 to 4 years and gave the other group healthy food for the same period of time.
Conclusion: After 34 years those who had the junk food did worse in school and had trouble learning.
OUR SURVEY We want to test this out for ourselves so we came up with our own
survey. In this survey we asked 20 students, 10 girls and 10 boys, 5 from
each grade (9th 10th 11th and 12th graders) the following questions: Do you ever feel tired in class, have lack of concentration, or fall asleep? if yes, before or after lunch? What is your current GPA?
3.74.0 3.33.69 3.33.0 3.0 or below
Do you usually eat breakfast? What would you rather have for lunch, given the following options?
Pizza, fries, and a pop. Salad, grapes, and juice. PB sandwich, Sun chips, and chocolate milk.
How much water did you drink today? 0 oz 12 8 oz glasses 36 8 oz glasses
OUR RESULTS All the students who said they were dehydrated,
meaning over about 14 hours, had less than one 8 ounces glasses of water and were not doing very well.
All the students who did not eat breakfast were tired through out the school day.
We also found out the most students say they eat and would want pizza, fries, and pop compared to other opinions.
WHAT IS IN IT?We decided to show what was really in
that meal
PIZZA1 slice:
sugar – 23.1g salt – 450mg
