March 1 - 7, 2013 Webster-Kirkwood Times 17-A Since 1894, Eye Care Associates of St. Louis has provided patients with comprehensive, hands-on, personalized eye care. Sean Breit, M.D. specializes in cataract surgery; Todd LaPoint, O.D. and Janae Kadlec, O.D. perform routine eye exams and are experts in specialty contact lens fitting; Stephen Wexler, M.D. is one of the most respected LASIK specialists in the country. Cindy Francis has joined the Frontenac Square office of HearUSA as a Hearing Instrument Specialist.

“Working in the hearing health care field is very rewarding, not only for the ability to help improve quality of life with better hearing, but also for developing friendships with those I help,” said Cindy, who joined HearUSA in January.

Cindy follows in the footsteps of her mother, who has been a hearing aid dispenser for over 20 years. She apprenticed in her mother’s practice for two years before receiving her professional license in 2006. Before joining HearUSA, Cindy worked for six years at Viers Hearing Center in Kirkwood. She is currently a member of the Missouri Hearing Society.

A native of southeast Missouri, Cindy relocated to the St. Louis area in 2007. She is firmly settled in Kirkwood with her husband and their two daughters.

“I’m excited to join the HearUSA team and share my years of experience with our patients,” Cindy said.

HearUSA has been in the hearing health care business for over 25 years, has 185 centers and is still growing. The company has a longstanding commitment to enhance the quality of life for the people it serves, and Cindy Francis shares that commitment.

HearUSA is accredited by URAC, an independent not-for-profit organization that sets quality standards for health care agencies.

Patients can meet Cindy during office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Tom and Lynn Schmittgens, owners of The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy® in Affton, have over 40 years of hands-on patient care experience between them. Both are pharmacists who are certified in diabetes, asthma and allergy care, and they perform professional immunizations against flu and shingles.

“We enjoy a small community practice and getting to know our patients,” Tom Schmittgens said. “We believe that a good pharmacist is an invaluable asset for good health, and that personal service and frequent contact are crucial to good health care. We’re here to help.”

This combination of quality professional and personal service is what draws many people to the Affton Medicine Shoppe. The store has an experienced and caring staff, and real people answer the phones during business hours.

Because this is a small pharmacy, patients can avoid long lines and get their prescriptions quickly. A drive-through window is available as an added convenience.

“Our focus is quality patient care, not prescription volume, and we look forward to serving you,” Schmittgens said.

The store also offers free next-day delivery for the same co-pay. Dave Downhour delivers patient prescriptions, along with over-the-counter and personal care items to multiple Zip codes, including 63118, 63119, 63122, 63123, 63125, 63128 and 63129.

“Our free delivery helps seniors to live independently longer. And even if you can get out, it’s still nice to know we deliver in case of illness or extreme weather,” said Lynn Schmittgens.

The store accepts Express Scripts, Blue Cross, MO HealthNet, Caremark, Medicaid, Medicare, MO Rx and most insurance plans.

West County Vision Center recently started its third year of providing comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages.

Practice owner Dr. L. Michelle McReynolds provides eye examinations from pediatrics to geriatrics, fittings for glasses and contacts, and management and treatment of eye injuries. She opened her practice in February 2011 to provide stability for herself and her patients. She can control the length of exams and staff quality and can offer the latest advancements in vision correction.

“I’m trying to educate people that everyone needs an annual eye examination, even if you have perfect vision,” said Dr. McReynolds. “Your eyes can reveal a lot about your systemic health. Optometry has really shifted its focus from just vision to medical. I can treat eye injuries and manage eye diseases, such as glaucoma and complications from diabetes and high blood pressure.”

Dr. McReynolds recently received her American Board of Optometry designation of Diplomate.

“This advanced certification is a voluntary process that allows optometrists to demonstrate that they exceed entry-level requirements and are dedicated to keeping up with new developments in order to provide high-quality patient care,” she explained.

Dr. McReynolds finds satisfaction in giving her patients the most thorough examination possible.

“I love getting to know my patients personally. By seeing them each year, I get to know their eyes and how best to meet their visual needs,” she said.

Her patients appreciate the efforts. “I appreciate the time Dr. McReynolds spends with

each client to ensure they receive the best contacts or glasses fitting possible,” said patient Stacy Wilder.

Dr. Jay S. Pepose opened Pepose Vision Institute (PVI) in 1999 with the belief that everyone should have access to the same quality eye care he would want for his family.

With that in mind, Dr. Pepose, Medical Director, along with his staff, Dr. Mujtaba Qazi, Director of Clinical Studies; Dr. Nancy Holekamp, Director of Retina Services; and Optometrists, Dr. James Rieger and Dr. Jennifer Redfern all provide the latest in eye care.

PVI offers services in LASIK vision correction, cataract, retina, macular degeneration, diseases of the eye, dry eyes, specialty contacts, contacts, glasses, sunglasses and wellness exams. New diagnostic and surgical technologies permit PVI to protect, enhance and restore the vision of many, many more people in the bi-state region.

PVI is committed to remaining at the forefront of vision treatments and technology. For this reason, PVI invests a great deal of resources to participate in clinical studies of the most advanced eye treatments under review by the Food and Drug Administration. Pepose Vision is St. Louis’ first and most experienced provider of laser vision correction surgery and the use of specialty-lens implants for cataract surgery. The most advanced treatment possible is delivered in a patient-centered compassionate environment. It is one of the few eye practices in the region that offers 24/7 on-call coverage for emergencies and patient concerns.

The staff derives satisfaction from seeing patients’ overwhelming joy the day after they have been given back their vision through one of PVI’s remarkable surgical treatments.

Patti is one of the many satisfied patients. “Dr. Pepose performed LASIK surgery on me, my

husband and our daughter several years ago and just recently performed cataract surgery and crystal lens implants for me,” she said. “I am so glad I can say I’m a patient.”

Next Step Foot and Ankle Centers Inc. has opened a new location at the beautiful new St. Clare Hospital facility to better serve its South County patients.

The new office is in the Francis Building at St. Clare, 1011 Bowles Ave., Suite #450 in Fenton. The podiatry practice maintains its Dougherty Ferry office and its South County office at 13303 Tesson Ferry Road, as well as four locations in Illinois and a satellite clinic in Perryville, MO.

Lindsay Barth, D.P.M., founded the practice as Foot and Ankle Associates in 1997, and Jacob Lamb, D.P.M., joined him as partner in 2006. The staff now includes associates Brian Martin, D.P.M., and Krista Nelson, D.P.M. Barth and Lamb both are board certified in surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.

The practice provides surgical and conservative treatments of foot and ankle conditions, including bunions, fungal nails, hammertoes, arthritis, pediatric abnormalities, tendonitis, athletic injuries and diabetic wounds. Next Step also offers sports medicine and provides emergency and trauma care.

“Next Step Foot and Ankle Centers are all about helping people to keep moving and stay a step ahead in life,” the owners said. “Nothing is worse than not being mobile, and we help people with foot and ankle problems get back on their feet and get back into life.”

Getting those patients on their feet again often involves new technologies such as laser therapy and total ankle replacement.

“We have grown with the times and adapted to the ever-changing technological advances,” said Next Step’s Nathan Rain.

Patients don’t have to wait long for relief. “We strive to get our patients, whether established or new,

an appointment within a few days of calling us, not a few weeks,” he said.

After serving patients in South County for more than 25 years, optometrists Dr. Karen Rosen and Dr. Steven Rosen opened their own practice in 2011 at Ronnie’s Plaza where they provide primary eye care and optical solutions to their patients.

The Rosens are trained in treating common eye diseases such as pink eye, glaucoma, allergies and dry eye syndrome.

“With new treatments, innovations in contact lenses, and state-of-the-art equipment, we can now help our patients in ways we couldn’t before,” said Dr. Steve.

They are proud of their selection of eyewear, from the smart-looking, value-priced collections to the trendy and designer lines.

“Today’s consumers want their eyewear to meet all their lifestyle needs, and we offer many types of frames, lens styles and materials to individualize each pair of glasses,” Dr. Karen said. “Over the years, technology has become more advanced, with computerized equipment, digital and high-definition lenses. We want our patients to have eyewear that is high quality, gives them the best vision correction, and lets them express themselves.”

Both Rosens are members of the American Optometric Association and other professional organizations.

“We frequently hear from our patients how we helped them see better, and how warm and friendly our staff is. The greatest satisfaction we get is from having patients bring in their family and friends to see us.”

Rosen Optometry is open six days a week and has evening hours. The practice accepts most insurance plans, and new patients are welcome!
