Dr Darren Morton PhD, FASLM, BEd, MAppSc, AAESS, ASMS

Lifestyle Medicine Presenter, Researcher, Senior Lecturer Inaugural Fellow Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine Dr Morton comes from an education background but his area of expertise is Lifestyle Medicine, in which he is recognised as an international authority. He is an inaugural Fellow of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine and one of four people selected worldwide to write the exam for Board Certification in Lifestyle Medicine for Physicians in the United States. Presently he is the Course Convenor for Postgraduate Studies in Lifestyle Medicine at Avondale. Dr Morton was a key developer of, and is a presenter in, the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) which is a premier Lifestyle Medicine intervention targeting chronic diseases that now operates in over 10 countries around the world. He is the author of four books and approximately 50 publications in scientific and medical journals, and is a recipient of the Australian Fitness Professional’s Author of the Year award. He has presented to corporate, education and community groups around the world and is an invited speaker at international academic conferences. He has also been awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the Australian university sector. The Lift Project has been developed by Dr Darren Morton and is based on the book titled “Live More: Happy. Scientifically proven ways to lift your mood and your life” written by Dr Darren Morton. The book draws together the latest findings in Neuroscience, Positive Psychology and Lifestyle Medicine and, while it is written for a popular audience, contains approximately 300 references. The outcomes of The Lift Project have been documented in peer-reviewed academic journals including the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine and TEACH Journal. These studies found that participants in the program reported on average a 25-30% reduction in stress, depressive symptoms and anxiety and a 15-20% increase in overall mental health and vitality. Significant improvements were also recorded in life satisfaction and happiness. Presently, a large randomised-controlled trial is underway studying the impact of the program on over 400 participants throughout Australasia. Two PhD students are working on this study through the Lifestyle Research Centre at Avondale College of Higher Education. Session Synopsis: Helping Happiness: Evidence-based Strategies from Lifestyle Medicine and Positive Psychology for Increasing Emotional Wellbeing — The mental health of Australians is suffering, as evidenced by a doubling in the use of antidepressant medication over the past decade resulting in one in ten adults taking antidepressants each day. Ironically, over the past few decades the emerging disciplines of Lifestyle Medicine and Positive Psychology have uncovered effective strategies for improving mental health and emotional wellbeing. These strategies will be explored in this fun and dynamic presentation.

Dr Dominic Simring BSc (Med), MBBS (Hons), FRACS (Vasc) Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon, Coastal Vascular Group Dr Dominic Simring is an Australian-trained Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon who specialises in minimally invasive treatments for arterial and venous disorders. He graduated medical school with Honours, University of New South Wales in 2000, concurrently completing a Bachelor of Arts with majors in Political Science and Philosophy.

After four years of general surgery training, he sub-specialised in Vascular Surgery training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010 and then recruited for post-fellowship training at the internationally renowned University College Hospital, London, as part of their Multidisciplinary Endovascular Team. He worked under Professor Krassi Ivancev, a world leader in interventional vascular radiology providing unique exposure to minimally invasive methods of treatment for arterial pathology, particularly complex aortic aneurysms. Declining the invitation to join the consultant staff at University College Hospital, he was instead drawn to the coastal lifestyle of the Byron Hinterland. Since 2011, he has been a Consultant at Lismore Base and St Vincent’s Hospitals, Lismore, providing a service to a patient population that extends as far south as Coffs Harbour and west to Glen Innes. He has recently expanded this service as part of the Coastal Vascular Group to include John Flynn Private Hospital. Currently he is Head of Department of Surgery at Lismore Base Hospital with over 50 national and international posters, publications, presentations and book chapters and is also Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Western Sydney. Session Synopsis: Vascular Surgery in the Modern Era— Vascular patients represent a challenging group - they are often elderly with multiple co-morbidities and are a high surgical risk. Given the morbidity and mortality associated with open vascular surgical procedures, there has been an emphasis on the development of minimally invasive, or endovascular techniques over the past 20 years. The improved outcomes and the lessened morbidity and mortality associated with endovascular surgery equates to more patients being offered surgery rather than palliation or amputation. There is perhaps no better example than open aortic aneurysm surgery being largely replaced by percutaneous endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) - this, and other endovascular procedures, from carotid stenting through to endovascular lower limb bypass to varicose vein ablation will be explored in this talk.

Session Synopsis: Cloud Migration & Efficiencies for Your Practice — Since 2006 when Google CEO Eric Schmidt coined the term “Cloud Computing” at an Industry Conference, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) community has been flooded with requests from businesses interested in adopting such technologies. Despite the general push towards cloud computing, Australia’s geographically dispersed Small and Medium Enterprise’s (SME’s) have been reasonably slow to adopt such technology for one key reason, cloud computing places a heavy reliance on connectivity or links such as internet connectivity, Wide-Area Networks (WAN) and Virtual Private Networks (VPN). According to the Akamai State of the Internet Report, our internet connection speeds are now slower than 50 other nations, including Thailand, Estonia, Bulgaria and Kenya. Accordingly, it has been difficult for Australian ICT professionals to recommend cloud technologies as adequate links are either cost prohibitive or simply don’t exist. Moreover, SME’s generally do not have the internal skillset to decipher available technology and rely on an ever-changing industry seemingly designed to confuse the consumer. However, as Bob Dylan wrote “the times they are a changing.” With the gradual rollout of the NBN and other high-speed internet services such technology is becoming more affordable and available for the masses. As such, we are currently witnessing large scale adoption of cloud computing in the Australia’s SME marketplace. Nevertheless, the questions remain, “how can cloud technology benefit me and how can we take advantage of this technology?”
