The term health food is generally used to describe foods that areconsidered to be beneficial to health, beyond a normal healthydiet required for human nutrition. However, the term is not preciselydefined by national regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration.

"Health food" is sometimes used as an umbrella term encompassing naturalfoods, organic foods, whole foods, and sometimes dietary supplements.Such products are sold inhealth food stores or in the health/organicsections of supermarkets. "Health food" may also refer to functional food:foods for which a specific claim of health benefits is made, such as thatconsumption of the food may prevent disease. Additionally, "health food" issometimes used in contrast with "junk food", which may be high in caloriesbut has little other nutritional value.

Prolonged stress, poor diets, sudden changes in temperature or causeenough sleep your body will suffer and go down our defenses.

There are signs, as pupae on the lips, tiredness more than usual, slow toheal wounds, muscle aches without physically inactive or fragile hair, whichreveal that our body's defenses are down. While the ideal would be toavoid, as far as possible, habits and situations that may weaken our body, proper nutrition can also help overcome hard times, it reinforces theimmune system that protects us from bacteria, viruses and otherpathogens.

A balanced diet strengthens the immune system:

Apparently energy intake has an obvious influence on immune activity, bothexcess and deficiency of calories. Excessive energy intake may affect theimmune system's ability to fight infections, so that obesity is linked to anincreased incidence of infectious diseases. In addition, obese people aremore likely to develop cardiovascular diseases, in turn, are associated withimpaired immune function. But malnourished people at increased risk ofinfections, like those who follow slimming diets of less than 1,200 calories aday or other higher number of calories but unbalanced, since these dietscan decrease immune function.

Reducing fat in the diet not only becomes crucial for weight control butalso for the optimal functioning of the immune system. It appears thathigh-fat diets reduce the immune response, increasing the risk ofinfections. Therefore, by reducing the fat content in the diet, increasedimmune activity. However, there is only a matter of quantity, source orquality of fat we put into our daily diet is also important. Appropriate toinclude in our diet oily fish, nuts, olive oil and sunflower or soybean orlinseed oil to ensure a balanced intake of different fats essential forhealth.

Regularly consume fermented milk products like yogurt or kefir--alsocontributes to enhance the immune defenses. In fact, studies show thatthose who regularly eat fermented milk also exhibit greater resistance tothe microorganisms that cause food poisoning, better immune status.

Finally, the maintenance conditions of the immune system requires a steadyintake of all vitamins and minerals. To do this, make sure to follow abalanced diet that includes variety of foods in adequate amounts.
