Health-Fit ChiropracTIPS CAN YOU GUESS THE MOST COMMONLY INJURED ROTATOR CUFF MUSCLE? Either email me your guess at info@healthfitchiro.com or let us know the next time you’re in the office. Rotator cuff tears are very common injuries, having said that, most people don’t realize that the majority of shoulder sprains and strains can be treated utilizing the conservative treatment we offer here at Health-Fit. Many times there is an imbalance in the musculature that supports the shoulder due to compensations from poor posture or old injuries that cause certain muscles to be overburdened and injured. Part of what we try to do when we’re treating a shoulder injury is to minimize the overall stress on the area. How is that accomplished? 1. By increasing upper torso flexibility to reduce the burden of movement on the shoulder. 2. By increasing stability and decreasing movement in the shoulder blade and shoulder girdle. 3. Increasing the alignment on the head of the shoulder to increase the flexibility in the joint itself. If you’re looking to find out more about shoulder injuries, you and a friend are welcome to attend our FREE workshop: Secrets of Shoulder Pain on August 12th from 7-8pm. Attendees will receive a free unit in the Sports Recovery Center! HOW CAN LASER THERAPY HELP ME? Lindsay Vonn, 2010 Olympic gold-medal winner in down-hill skiing was the first American woman to do so, and she did it while injured. In an interview with Time Magazine she was asked, “How did you find the strength to compete with an injury?” She responded in part by attributing laser therapy as a key component to her success. When a tissue gets injured, there are three phases that comprise the healing response of the body to that injured tissue: acute inflammation, regeneration of tissues, remodeling of structures. In the regeneration phase, it takes energy to regenerate these new tissues. This means that the speed of regeneration is limited by the amount of energy that tissue has. How does laser therapy help in this regard? Laser stimulates an organ component in your cells called mitochondria, which produce energy for your cells to repair itself. By stimulating the mitochondria to produce energy, your cells now have an accelerated source of energy renewal, thus enhancing your recovery. On the other side of the spectrum, there are things that can delay recovery by stifling energy production; for example, smoking cigarettes. Cigarette smoke produces carbon monoxide which reduces the amount of available oxygen in your blood. Oxygen is a necessary component to produce the energy your body needs. By reducing the maximum level of oxygen in the body, you are suppressing your body’s ability to heal itself. If you have a nagging injury that simply won’t heal, try laser therapy; if you smoke cigarettes, you have just learned another way in which it harms your body. Fun Facts • During your lifetime, you will produce enough saliva to fill two swimming pools. • You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television. • Dr. Suess wrote “Green Eggs and Ham” to win a bet against his publisher who thought he could not complete a book with only 50 words. • Russia did not consider beer an alcoholic beverage until 2011. CAN YOU GUESS THE MOST COMMONLY INJURED ROTATOR CUFF MUSCLE?

Either email me your guess at [email protected] or let us know the next time you’re in the office.

THE CORPORATE CHIROPRACTOR®

Research and experience has revealed that chiropractic care reduces healthcare utilization and cost, and increase patient satisfaction. Further evidence has shown that corporate on-site chiropractic clinics have improved those param-eters even more significantly. The Corporate Chiropractor® program will fully implement a chiropractic physician into your corporation to provide chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, ergonomics/work sta-tion consultations and strain/sprain preventative pro-grams. Our on-site care program reduces recordable rates and worker’s compensation claims by focusing on soft tissue discomforts and injury preven-tion. In 2006, OSHA provided a ruling and documentation

stating that Active Release Techniques® (A.R.T.) is a form of movement-based massage. OSHA deems massage tech-niques to be a form of First-Aid and not a medical treat-ment. If the employee has a discomfort, or if administered in a prevention format, A.R.T. is considered First Aid, not a recordable treatment. If the employee also receives med-ical treatment, a job transfer, restricted work activity, or days away from work, it would then be considered a recordable injury. The A.R.T. provider and the safety manager/human resources department work in conjunction to follow the correct care path for each em-ployee. This will decrease the company’s worker’s compensa-tion costs considerably.

SHOULDER INJURIES AND YOUR GOLF SWING

We see a lot of golf injuries in our clinic, and the shoulder is one of the most common next to low back pain. We are Titleist Performance Institute Certified Medical Professionals and I wanted to give you a snippet from a great article found on www.mytpi.com. A link to the full article is found below.

“The shoulders are a particularly vulnerable area in the golf swing. A 2006 review of literature by McHardy, Pollard and Luo found that the shoulder accounts for between 8% and 18% of all golf-related injuries. While shoulder pain is not nearly as common as lower back pain, research suggests that the shoulder is the third most oft-injured part of the body (behind the lower back and wrist).

To get into the backswing we must have good thoracic spine mobility away from the ball and internal rotation on the back hip. Coming through the ball, the emphasis reverses.

Those that have poor thoracic spine mobility or hip internal rotation are going to compensate to get into their back swing. This usually means that the rotation comes from the low back or the shoulder, two areas not meant to be the axis of rotation.

The shoulder, especially, takes the brunt of the force when someone tries to have a long backswing and basically rips their arm across their body. These people are just asking for a rotator cuff or labral tear.”
