The UCL MSc in Health Economics and DecisionScience spans the disciplines of economics,statistics and epidemiology - training students inapplied problems, while providing the theoreticalfoundations expected of an outstanding UCLpostgraduate degree. Strong links to industry anddemand for skills in this area mean that graduatesof this programme will be highly employable.

 Degree summary 

Students choose between a decision science or economics stream andcomplete eight taught modules and a project. Some students will havethe opportunity of an industry internship. All graduates will understandhow the political, economic and physical context of health systemsframes the application of economics and decision science. Graduateswill be able to conduct rigorous cost-effectiveness analyses of healthtechnologies and interventions.

// UCL offers a unique, multidisciplinary environment in which to studyhealth economics and decision science. The teaching teamcomprises economists, statisticians, epidemiologists,mathematicians and public health doctors among others. As aworld-leading university, we research, publish and consult on thetopics we teach. Our strong links to industry, policy and academiaenhance the relevance of our teaching and the employmentopportunities of our graduates.

Teaching will be delivered using a wide range of methods includingclassroom teaching, peer-led seminars, online lectures and practicalexercises, moderated debates, group exercises and reading and writingtasks. Assessment varies from written examinations, to essays, portfoliosand oral presentations.

A number of students will have the opportunity to undertake an industryplacement. This will not be assessed as part of the programme andaccess to placements is voluntary and based on open competition.

 Degree structure 

Mode: Full-time: 1 year; Part-time: 2 years; Flexible: 2-5 years

Location: London, Bloomsbury

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. Studentsundertake modules to the value of 180 credits compromising eighttaught modules worth 15 credits each and a substantive piece ofstudent-led research that will carry 60 credits. Students must undertakeeither four or five core modules. The combination and number ofmodules studied will depend on your chosen stream and whether yourbackground is in statistics or economics.

DISSERTATION/REPORT

// All students undertake an indepedent research project, which culminates in adissertation of up to 10,000 words (60 credits). Some students may conduct theirresearch project together with industry partners.

 Your career 

Graduates of this MSc may go on to work within the pharmaceuticalindustry, local or national government departments, internationalorganisations, think tanks, consultancies or in academia among otheropportunities. Programme organisers liaise with a range of potentialemployers to create internship opportunities where students canexperience the working environment in their field and develop importantprofessional networks.

Employability

As the global population grows and ages, so too does the challenge ofproviding equitable access to cost-effective healthcare. This MSc hasbeen developed to fill a gap in training and skills in higher education, toembrace the multidisciplinary nature of health economics and decisionscience and provide students with a solid theoretical foundation - whileallowing them to choose specific pathways within which they can focuson either more advanced modelling or advanced applied economics.

 Entry requirements 

A minimum of an upper second‐class UK Bachelor's degree or anoverseas qualification of an equivalent standard in a relevant,quantitative subject.

English language proficiency level

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, youwill be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level ofEnglish proficiency.

The level of English language proficiency for this programme is: Good.
