The Definition of Health According to World Health Organization
• It is the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Carl Anderson’s definition of health:
• The quality of physical, emotional, and mental well being which enables one to live effectively and enjoyably.
Frederick Kilander defines health as:
• The complete fitness of the body, soundness of mind, and the wholesomeness of emotion which makes possible the highest quality of effective living and of service.
Dimensions of Health
Physical Health• this component makes the
body systems and organs function efficiently, have high level of resistance and immunity, have muscular strength, flexibility, and neuromuscular coordination and balance.
Mental and Emotional Health
• this component which includes the feelings, thoughts, social behavior, and identity helps a person cope with stress successfully; feel good about oneself and others: accept reality and appreciate consequences; maintain self-control, self-discipline, and emotional stability; accept social roles and responsibility for behavior; and establish, comply, and maintain commitments.
Social Health
• this component has something to do with interacting with others such as socializing with friends, relatives, and others in a desirable way; having friends of all ages; and accepting responsibility for others.
Health Appraisal• This refers to a series of procedures to
assess or determine the health status of the students through the use of teacher’s observations, screening tests, health histories or medical records, medical and dental inspections and psychological tests. They are dependent upon the cooperative effort of parents, teachers, physicians, dentists, health educators, nurses and others in the school program.
School Health Personnel• School Physician- takes charge of the medical
examination of students, teachers and other school health personnel.
• School Nurse- assists the physician in determining the health status of the students and other school personnel. She is also expected to plan, organize and administer or manage the school clinic.
• School Dentist- takes charge of the dental examinations of students, teachers, and other school personnel.
Duties of the School Health Personnel

• Health Examination
• Follow-up
• Emergency Care Program
• Control of Communicable Diseases
Health Examinations• Dental Examination- This is done by the school
dentist who will give information on proper dental hygiene and importance of the teeth.
• Medical Examination- this is the final step in health appraisal with a physical examination and evaluation made by a physician.
• Screening Test- part of the school’s health appraisal program that seek to provide for the students a comprehensive record on their health.– A. Vision Test- with the use of Snellen Chart– B. Hearing Test- whisper test or audiometer– Height and weight Measurement
