Medical Research found that workers who spend excessive amounts of

time at their desk may have a higher risk of developing potentially fatal

blood clots.

A third of patients admitted to hospital with deep vein thrombosis

(DVT) were office workers who spent hours at a computer. Some sat at

their screens for over 8 hours a day. Others were going three to four

hours at a time without getting up, often not taking a proper lunch

break, preferring instead to eat at their desk while attending to emails.

DVT is the formation of a blood clot in the deepest veins, most

commonly in the calf or thighs. Symptoms include pain or tenderness in

the leg, a swollen area of the leg that is warmer than the surrounding

area and discolored skin.

These clots can travel to the heart, lungs or brain, causing chest pain,

breathlessness or possible death from a heart attack or stroke.

Do Take That Break!

DVT is entirely preventable. When the

cause is inactivity, the cure is

movement. Take steps— literally—to

amend your inactivity. Set an alarm and

force yourself to get up and move

around every 30 minutes.
