Blend in the Good with Jamba Juice

Page 11: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Although health-minded people are incorporating more vegetables, fruits and whole grains into their diets, according to a recent survey by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), we are still not consuming enough to make a major difference. In fact, Americans are only consuming 63 percent of the recommended amount of vegetables and only 38 percent of the amount of fruit needed for a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Amid the abundance of processed and fast food options that are mostly void of quality nutrients, one retailer is striving to make a difference in how we eat. Founded in 1990 with over 850 store locations globally, Jamba Juice offers wholesome meal and snack options including whole food nutrition smoothies, freshly squeezed juices and juice blends, hot teas, and a variety of food items including hot build-your-own oatmeal, breakfast wraps, and sandwiches. Jamba also leads the “Team Up for a Healthy America” program – a national campaign involving celebrities, athletes and community partners in the mission to improve childhood health and wellness.

Meet the Healthy Living Council

Elizabeth Ward is a registered dietitian, nutrition consultant, and freelance writer. Her latest book is MyPlate for Moms, How to Feed Yourself & Your Family Better. In addition to appearances on the Today Show and Dr. Oz Show, Elizabeth regularly writes for Muscle & Fitness, Hers and Men’s Fitness magazines, has been a contributing writer for WebMD, and serves on the Advisory Board for Men’s Fitness.

Kathleen Zelman is a registered dietitian, and has been the director of nutrition for a health and wellness website for more than 11 years. During her tenure, she has helped build a state-of-the-art food, diet and nutrition portal. She also serves as the nutrition expert for the United Healthcare Source 4 Women and United Healthcare television and is a Health Professional Advisor to the Egg Nutrition Center, where she provides guidance and expertise on issues of health and wellness.

Tara Gidus is the co-host of Emotional Mojo, a national television show, and regularly appears as the “Diet Diva” on the national morning television show, The Daily Buzz. She currently serves as the team dietitian for the Orlando Magic NBA team, nutrition consultant to University of Central Florida Athletic Department and the official nutritionist for runDisney. Previously Tara served as the National Media Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

To ensure an always-evolving menu that provides healthy meal and snack options, Jamba looks to the expertise of their Healthy Living Council, an independent group of registered dietitians and nutrition specialists.

Page 12: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

In a recent chat with these esteemed nutrition experts, they served up some great advice to help us eat a healthy, more balanced diet.Q & A

What would help curb the epidemic of childhood obesity?

Kathleen Zelman: It’s not one single food or beverage that is the culprit but too many calories in general and inadequate activity. I suggest portion control, fewer nutrient-poor foods and more exercise. Try to make wise food decisions most of the time and get at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day.

What would be considered a well-balanced diet?

Tara Gidus: A well-balanced diet is one that balances a person’s caloric burn with their intake, something which varies greatly from person to person. It should include protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats each day.

How many servings of fruits and vegetables should an average adult consume? How about children and teens?

Elizabeth Ward: Fruit and vegetable suggestions are based on calorie needs, so a child may need between 3 and 5 servings, and teens, who often have the same calorie needs as adults, would need about 5 servings daily. Possibly more. The more active you are, the more calories you need to maintain your weight so the more fruits and vegetables you need. Very active people need upwards of 7 to 10 servings daily.

What are some ways people can easily increase the amount of fruit and vegetables they consume per day?

Elizabeth Ward: There are so many easy ways to boost fruit and vegetable intake to achieve the needed 5 servings a day. Here are my tips:

• Fruit or fruit/vegetable smoothies.

• Replace meat with beans in chili and pasta dishes (beans are vegetables).

• Add chopped vegetables to prepared pasta sauce or to your favorite lasagna recipe.

• Make homemade trail mix with nuts or seeds, dried fruit, and whole grain cereal.

• Prepare fruit-based desserts like baked apples or pears, or apple or pear crisp.

• Have fruits and vegetables at every meal and snack.

Kathleen Zelman: Also consider enjoying smoothies, freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, topping yogurt, cereal and frozen treats with fruit, layering sandwiches and wraps with veggies, adding veggies to egg dishes, eating a salad at dinner, drinking vegetable juice, and the list goes on. Build Your

Own Oatmeal With Blueberries and Strawberries

Page 13: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Tara Gidus: Fruits and vegetables are unfortunately an afterthought or not even a thought at all! Be conscious of looking for fruits and/or veggies at every meal. As far as how to get them, be creative: Smoothies, salads, soups, casseroles, etc. Add spinach and tomato to every sandwich you eat. Add fruits and veggies to common recipes and choose soups with a vegetable or bean-base (like black bean).

Use fruits and vegetables as snacks like a banana mid-morning, raw sliced red peppers and hummus mid-afternoon, and a bowl of berries in the evening. Instead of eating yogurt out of the cup, cut up some fresh fruit (oranges, grapes, berries, pineapple, etc.) and pour the yogurt on top. Have a smoothie made with fresh or frozen fruit for a meal or a snack. Add kale, spinach, or freshly squeezed carrot or beet juice to boost the vegetable content.

What benefits do beets and darker, leafy veggies like kale or spinach offer?

Elizabeth Ward: Beets are brimming with antioxidants that help fight chronic disease as well as fiber, and several vitamins and minerals. Plus, they lend natural sweetness and an enticing hue to smoothies. On the whole, dark green leafy vegetables contain vitamin K, which helps build bone, beta-carotene that serves as the raw material for the body’s production of vitamin A, and calcium, vitamin C, and folate. The darker the green, the greater the health benefit, although I’ve never met a vegetable I didn’t value, nutrition-wise!

What are the health benefits of juicing?

Kathleen Zelman: Juicing, when done for a meal or two is fine. Juices made with whole fruits and vegetables are best, and can be a convenient way to meet produce requirements.

How does including berries in our diet benefit us?

Elizabeth Ward: Berries have antioxidants, including anthocyanins, quercetin, and vitamin C, that can help your body fight oxidative stress, which can lead to chronic conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and arthritis. Every fruit and vegetable has antioxidants, but berries have more than most. In addition to antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, berries are mostly water and are useful to keep you hydrated and to fill you up.

What are some of the benefits of a diet that includes oatmeal?

Tara Gidus: Oats are whole grains that provide an excellent source of fiber, iron, protein, and magnesium, as well as a good source of potassium. The recommended intake of whole grains is 3 to 5 servings per day. Oatmeal is a great whole grain choice that can help meet this 3 to 5 servings a day goal. The recommended intake of fiber is 25g for

“Pre-plan by cutting up fruit and or veggies and put them into easy-to-grab

containers to take them on-the-go.”

women and 38g for men, but according to the Harvard School of Public Health, most Americans only get about 15g of fiber per day.

Fiber helps to bind bile acids and results in a lowered cholesterol level reducing the risk of heart disease. Fiber also helps to control blood sugar levels, prevent constipation and makes you feel full faster making oatmeal a highly satisfying meal.

What are some ways busy parents can help their families eat better?

Tara Gidus: First and foremost, parents need to be role models for healthy eating for their kids. If kids don’t see a parent eating fruits and veggies, or if they are always eating chips or candy, the kids will likely follow suit.

Plan ahead. We are all extremely busy, and good nutrition isn’t easy to come by if it’s an afterthought. Take some time on the weekend to plan out the meals for the week. Batch cook so you have leftovers or a casserole that’s made up and can go into the oven. Utilize crock-pots for an easy meal that’s ready when you get home.

When dining out, read nutritional information from restaurants and have an idea of which places have good options for the entire family.

Elizabeth Ward: Have kids take fruit, nuts, yogurt, and other healthy snacks with them to school and to eat before sports, and eliminate all sports drinks. Also have children come up with healthy meals and snacks they would like to try and get them involved in shopping for ingredients and making the food.

What do you think of Jamba Juice’s offerings and initiative for healthier eating?

Kathleen Zelman: I am really proud of Jamba Juice and their commitment to being part of the solution to help consumers eat healthier by offering a wide variety of good-for-you options. From the kids’ meals loaded with whole grains, fruits, veggies and protein, cholesterol lowering oatmeal, to the super nutritious fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, there is something for everyone. Elite athletes can fuel up with fruit smoothies and dieters can enjoy the same smoothies made light or boost them with whole grains or satisfying protein.

Elizabeth Ward: As a member of the Healthy Living Council, I am proud to work with a company like Jamba that spends so much time and energy on developing delicious products that are good for you, too. Steel-cut oats, fresh squeezed and cold pressed juices, fruit and vegetable smoothies, and energy bowls are among the offerings that make it easier for you to work in the good nutrition that experts like me recommend.

Russell J. Salvatore A Buffalo Legend

If you choose the nearby city of Buffalo, New York as a base camp for your Niagara Falls adventure or you find yourself in town for any reason, consider visiting the one-and-only Russell Salvatore of Salvatore’s Grand Hotel and Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More.

More than a roadside curiosity, the Russell’s experience includes lodging at Salvatore’s Grand Hotel, a handsome and meticulously operated inn with every imaginable amenity, and Russell’s restaurant, a four-star palace with impeccable service, spectacular entrees and imaginative side dishes served up in a refreshingly old school steakhouse vibe.

Although the accommodations and cuisine are undeniably excellent, what really sets this place apart is the man himself.

Aged to perfection, tanned and stylishly suited at all times, Russell is a bona fide Buffalo superstar. Whether cruising in his baby blue Bentley convertible or touring the grounds in his matching “Bentley” golf cart, Russell commands attention, or perhaps deserves attention is a more accurate description.

His philanthropy and generosity for the local community is the stuff of legends. Be sure to check out the Russell J. Salvatore Patriots and Heroes Park with a memorial to the victims of Flight 3407, replicas of the World Trade Center Twin Towers, a Battle of The Budge World War II memorial, a statue of an archangel and, if Mr. Salvatore has his way, and there is no reason to think otherwise, the park will someday be the home of an eternal monument to the man himself. Yep, as planned, Russell will spend eternity in his very own roadside mausoleum.

Come see for yourself what 60 years of hard work has created. The steaks alone are worth the trip!

Style Icons “My style icons begin with Victoria Beckham who inspires me constantly. She is a strong working mother, who has built an incredibly successful business whilst maintaining a family life. Somehow she manages to look flawless and her sophisticated and tailored outfits are always on point. Other icons include the Olsen Twins, as they always look so chic and cool. I’m also a big fan of Leigh Lezark, Gwen Stefani and Miranda Kerr. All beautiful, stylish and successful women.”

Catch up with Victoria’s latest hauls on youtube.com/inthefrowand newest styles and reviews on Inthefrow.com.

“I also love products that maintain a particular hairstyle, such as the Living Proof Prime Style Extender, that you add into the hair before drying. It can really help to set your hair into place, maintaining your style for longer and reducing the need to wash it. The less we need to wash the hair the better.”

Hair Must-Haves“My hair must-haves include products that really keep strands in fantastic condition.I use Moroccan Oil over the ends of the hair before drying, to add moisture and life back into tired and broken ends. I would also recommend investing in a 1-inch or 1.5-inch barrel curler from Hot Tools, Lee Stafford or Babyliss for any special events, or just to give your hair some oomph for the office.”

After 16 seasons as a pro on Dancing with the Stars,Karina Smirnoff recently announced that she would

not be returning for the upcoming 20th season of the hugely popular ABC competition show.

With spring in the air and summertime just around the corner, our timing was perfect to meet up and talk about her next steps

on and off the dance floor, and what’s on the horizon for this wildly talented dancer, actress and author.

Secluded high above Los Angeles just below the internationally famous Hollywood sign, Karina’s cozy

Mediterranean villa, like the lady of the house, radiates warmth, charm, and tranquility while buzzing with

an undercurrent of positive energy.

Perched on a lushly terraced parcel, the home provides spectacular canyon views and includes peaceful Zen gardens, a

game room, a designer kitchen, and all of the comfy amenities one would expect in the home of a major network celebrity.

Though many of her neighbors are members of Los Angeles’ power elite, and hers is a zip code enviable even by

Hollywood standards, Karina’s path to fame and fortune began a long way from this glitzy hilltop neighborhood. Her success, in fact, is the product of a lifetime of hard work, determination and

unwavering focus.

Born in the Ukraine to Greek and Russian parents, Karina and her family immigrated to New York when she was 14, initially settling in the Bronx. Though she now happily resides on the

West Coast, there is a part of this California girl that will always call New York home.

Hyperactive as a child, Karina’s parents introduced her to figure skating at the age of two. As she laughingly recalls a photo of

her two-year-old self on skates, dressed as a snowflake, Karina stated, “In America, that outfit might

be considered child abuse!”

Karina graduated from Fordham University with a double major in economics and information system programming. While pursuing her degrees, she was also interested in becoming an attorney.

Karina appreciates fine art and is currently enamored by the eco-friendly works of artist Parvez Taj.

Karina gained her love for cinema as a child in her native Ukraine. Her first movie star crush? The Muscles from Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Karina practices Krav Maga, the highly refined self-defense system developed by the Israeli Military.

Karina knew most of the dancers who appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, the long running British precursor to ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Though invited to be a part of that show, at the time Karina’s busy ballroom schedule prevented her from accepting until she found the time to say yes to Season 3 of American Dancing with the Stars. Thankfully she did and has graced the Mirror Ball stage for 16 successful seasons.

Dancing with the Stars

Who Knew?

Figure skating led to gymnastics, ballet, years of piano lessons and finally, to ballroom dancing where the one-time tomboy fit perfectly into the mix of sports, teamwork, show business, and glamour.

Karina recalls that she fell in love with the style of ballroom dancing from the get-go. It not only showed her “the girly side of things,” but it allowed her to learn the art of telling a story through dance.

Page 42: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Karina mentions that one of her favorite partners on DWTS (in addition to Corbin Bleu and J.R. Martinez) was actor-producer Ralph Macchio, with whom she collaborated for her critically acclaimed lead film debut in Across Grace Alley.

It’s no wonder that Karina’s debut was universally well received; her well-honed ability to tell a story with dance translates well into acting where, like high-level dancing, less is more.

An Actor is Born

In dancing, the more you swing your arms around, the less story you will be

able to tell.

Page 43: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

You work up quite a sweat dancing. What do you use so your makeup stays put?

Nowadays, there is advanced technology in everything including makeup. I love the Stay All Day Beauty Balm from Stila…One of the brands that I go to the most. I can literally go to yoga, sweat for two hours and when I come out, it’s still on. It’s still working! Whether my physical activity is hiking or yoga or Pilates, I tend to not wear a lot of makeup along with lashes, even though I know a lot of people who do.

Speaking of lashes, yours are so beautiful. What’s your secret?

My mom and dad are from Russian-Greek cultures. My mom taught me from the early days to use diluted olive oil to remove makeup, which helps the eyelashes stay moisturized and helps with the growth. Lately, I invested in a small bottle of Latisse. The bottle is this big, (thumb and index finger almost together) but it does wonders for the lashes.

Tan? Self tan? Spray tan?

I’ll be very honest. When I was younger, I thought tanning beds were God’s gift to earth! Now, I realize the damage they can do and I would never use one or let my children use one, when you can literally go spend 30 minutes to get a beautiful spray tan that lasts a week and doesn’t damage your skin.

But, for those who don’t want a spray tan, there are over the counter products like Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs that you can put on. It doesn’t come off on your clothes, and it works. Take a shower and ‘shebang’ you’re pale again. Casper is back!

What are your favorite makeup brands?

I love Stila and I love Tarte. I feel like they have so many choices for everyday natural makeup, event makeup and show makeup with glitter and sparkle. I also love Marc Jacobs Foundation. It’s oil-free and stays on all day.

Guy liner?

No guy liner. No man-scara! No man purse! Not to mention that your natural makeup is facial hair. You can take it away. You can do different stuff with it. You can do a three-day shadow. The stuff that men can do with their facial hair is sexy, and unique, and masculine, and hot!

Ever wonder how Karina achieves her flawless look? Health Beauty Life was able to sneak in a few gotta-know questions while she was in makeup before her photo shoot. Let’s listen in…

In operation since 1916, the Whirlpool Aero Car travels between two different points of the Canadian shore of the Niagara River over the spectacular whirlpool rapids. Suspended from six sturdy cables, the antique cable car safely carries 35 standing passengers 3,600 feet roundtrip over the stunning but turbulent water below. The tour offers a unique view of the natural phenomenon, which formed at the end of the rapids where the Great Gorge turns abruptly counterclockwise and the Niagara River escapes through the narrowest channel in the gorge.

After your Whirlpool Aero Car tour, don’t forget to check out the White Water Walk and stroll the boardwalk alongside the raging rapids that twist and turn through this incredible waterway. Designated Class VI rapids, this is one of the world’s most dangerous stretches of whitewater and a must-see for river rafting enthusiasts. hen a woman is dissatisfied with the size, shape or consistency of her breasts it can be difficult to feel attractive and feminine. Pregnancy, the effects of age or

even weight loss can leave breasts smaller or less firm than before. For many women, breast augmentation can offer the desired natural looking fullness, which can in turn help them enjoy life with self-assured confidence.

Case Study

After 18 years of having breast implants, Kaneta was noticing some deflating in her right saline implant. Since receiving the original augmentation, she has experienced an active lifestyle, childbirth and the natural loosening of skin that comes with age. According to triple board certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Richard Chaffoo of La Jolla Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, this is not that unusual as there is a deflation rate of 1-2% per year for many older implants.

There has been some chatter that early silicone implants were associated with many autoimmune diseases or even breast cancer, but Dr. Chaffoo sites that a multitude of credible sources, including the FDA, have not found an association. Based on these findings, silicone implants have been re-released onto the market, but now with better technology. The shells are now sturdier and the material on the inside is not a liquid, rather a gel-like substance that Dr. Chaffoo affectionately calls gummy bears.

If you want to completely avoid silicone, Dr. Chaffoo recommends staying away from implants all together, as even the saline versions have a silicone shell. He also points out that for any foreign material, the body knows that it does not belong and covers it in a scar tissue, which actually offers a form of insulation. That way, in the unlikely event that an older implant actually leaks, the scar tissue acts as a buffer.

Sizing Up

Dr. Chaffoo also points out that there are no standardized cup sizes in the medical field, as the industry goes by CCs for implants, versus an alphabetical ranking. There are different styles and base widths for implants, not to mention different composites, and what looks good on one woman would look totally different on another.

When asked about the process of breast augmentation, Dr. Chaffoo said, “To pick a breast size, I first get a feel for what the patient thinks is attractive.

What their concept of beauty is using photos of other women with a similar body type as reference. We also introduce sizers in a bra to try on a larger size and get a feel for what such an increase will be like.”

He continues, “At the time of the surgery, I make an incision either around the nipple or in the breast fold and a sterile spacer is put in place to get a better idea of what the augmentation will look like. In the case of a woman with little soft tissue to begin with, the implants are placed under the muscle, versus on top. This provides a more natural looking blend and offers less hardening of the capsule, but does require a different level of recovery.”

Choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery is an exciting, but serious decision. It’s important for a woman to feel comfortable and confident about the choice, so Dr. Chaffoo suggests looking for a plastic surgeon who not only does breast augmentations but who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He also suggests making sure that the doctor has privileges at local hospitals in the remote event that a complication develops during outpatient surgery.

“Plastic Surgery is all about

the details where millimeters count as you strive to get the

BEST outcome for each patient.”

Great Results

In Kaneta’s case, her replacement surgery went well. She has completely healed and her new implants have given her a renewed sense of confidence!

Thinning hair can undermine the self-esteem of even the most confident person. In an effort to retain a youthful appearance with a full head of hair, many people look to various hair restoration methods as a solution.

According to Dr. Chaffoo, a triple board-certified plastic surgeon in San Diego, California, hair surgery is one of the most critical aesthetic procedures, as it is permanent and can’t simply be covered or hidden.

“We’ve all seen bad plastic surgery and bad hair surgery,” exclaims Dr. Chaffoo. “I tell patients that great plastic surgery whispers while bad plastic surgery screams. Nothing is more true, certainly, than in hair surgery.”

He continues, “From the design of the hairline to the team and devices used, it’s all vital to achieving an aesthetic result. There are also so many options out there for hair restoration and the key is to find something that really works well, gets reproducible results, has FDA approval, and a long safety record.”

Of all of the hair restoration methods available, this specialist feels that the NeoGraft shines as a system. This process automates the latest techniques for a safe, advanced, minimally invasive alternative to traditional hair transplant procedures.

Technically a form of follicular unit extraction (FUE), NeoGraft takes hair grafts from the back of the head (where hair is genetically programmed not to fall out) so they can be placed in thinning or balding areas. Compared to the more common “strip” or follicular unit transplantation surgery, the less costly FUE procedure maximizes the use and preservation of the finite amount of donor hair available. It can be performed with local anesthetic and results in minimal bleeding.

The recovery time is also shorter and the procedure doesn’t leave a visible scar.

The older techniques, which are still used in many clinics, use the strip method. A full segment of scalp is removed, which is a deep and invasive procedure that tends to leave a long scar across the back of the head that may be difficult or impossible to conceal.

Dr. Chaffoo also points out these linear scars are very unpredictable, as many patients get a scar that widens and it tends to thin out the hair around it. Since you’ve only got a limited number of donor sites in which to transplant elsewhere and in the case of strip procedures, you’ve lost that area.

“The beauty with the NeoGraft system is that it extracts the follicular unit but does not damage the surrounding tissue,” says Dr. Chaffoo. “After the follicular units are removed, the scalp just contracts down and the surrounding units contract in and that scar heals up so that it is virtually imperceptible.”

Comparing Apples to Oranges… or in this Case Strip Grafts to NeoGrafts

Our publisher, Patrick Dockry, is still numb from his strip graft surgery done at another clinic over a decade ago. Although he had great results otherwise, he has opted to go with the NeoGraft procedure for an update to his continued thinning.

The Latest in Hair Restorationwith Dr. Chaffoo

“It’s as critical how you harvest the hair as how

you plant the hair.”

68 | Health Beauty Life Magazine

Page 69: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

For Patrick’s procedure, the target transplant area is outlined. The donor area in back is shaved and then re-outlined with a Sharpie to clearly identify the site. To anesthetize the affected nerve endings, a local anesthetic called Lidocaine is laced with epinephrine, which helps constrict the blood vessels. When injected, it helps minimize the amount of bleeding during the procedure, as the scalp is the most vascular part of the body.

The punches used to extract the grafts come in a variety of sizes ranging from 1.25 mm to.8 mm but in this case a 1.0 mm was used as Patrick has larger groupings of hair follicles to be harvested. The needle is inserted about 1 mm deep into the scalp at the donor area and then the NeoGraft unit vacuums out the graft, which is immediately placed into a saline solution to keep it moist and help minimize any damage normally incurred from handling. About 1000 grafts, each with 2-5 hairs per follicular unit, are transplanted into the receiving area using a 16 or 18 gage needle. Single hairs are placed at the hairline in front while multiple-hair grafts are transplanted further back.

The next day, Patrick has slight swelling on his forehead and on top of his head where more grafts were transplanted in the crown. There are also small black “crustings” at each transplant site that, according to Dr. Chaffoo, will flake off in another week and will soon be replaced by hairs. Those hairs fall out in about three months and then new hair grows in place. Typically it takes 12-15 months to realize the full effect of the NeoGraft procedure. In the mean time, the donor site has recovered and has been fully restored with normal hair growth.

Several weeks after the surgery, Patrick is now proud to show off his full head of hair!

Founded by Carter Oosterhouse, known from popular series such as FYI Network’s Rowhouse

Showdown, HGTV’s Carter Can, Red Hot & Green, Celebrity Motor Homes, and more, Carter’s Kids is a non-profit organization dedicated to partnering within communities to enable children to improve their social, physical and cognitive development through play. In addition to creating awareness about fitness and self-esteem for our youth, the foundation is also committed to combating the issue of childhood obesity, which has more than tripled in the past 30 years.

The percentage of children in the United States aged 6–11 years who are considered to be obese has increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 20% by 2008. Similarly, the percentage of obese adolescents aged 12–19 years has increased from 5% to 18% over the same period of time. And, high blood pressure, diabetes, as well as heart and kidney disease are occurring more often for children and at a younger age.

Obesity also carries over into adulthood with a current rate of 34.5% in the United States, or one in every three adults. This increased amount of adult obesity has also led to higher

“There is no greater sense of satisfaction

than when you see something that you’ve

built being enjoyed by others.”

rates of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and even cancer. So the issue is clearly a serious one and is at epidemic proportions.

Knowing that children need a minimum of 60 minutes of active play daily (in addition to balanced food consumption), Carter’s Kids has made it their mission to increase the activity level in children by developing and building community parks and playgrounds in their neighborhoods. This goal has led to building various projects in communities all over the United States and has given kids the opportunity to take an active part in building up their community by using, sharing, and caring for these well-purposed public spaces. Having these parks in the community also helps to fight gang violence and gives kids a safe place to play.

“These playgrounds demonstrate a community’s core values and create healthier places to live, work and play,” states founder of the namesake charity, Carter Oosterhouse. “It’s an incredible thing to be a part of and knowing that they will have a long lasting effect on the community is something we’re really proud of.”

This celebrity-backed foundation works closely with neighborhood children to ensure that they are

involved participants in the building process from beginning to end. This collaborative effort insures that they will be active and creates a connection with the kids and their space so that they gain the sense of ownership and pride for something that they helped build.

Working hard to promote active lifestyles for our kids, Carter’s Kids is seeking corporate sponsorships to help fulfill their mission. To find out how you can help support their efforts or even get involved at a local level, please visit Carters-Kids.org.

Infertility is not just a female issue, in fact

about 40% of the time there are obstacles

to overcome on the male side.

76 | Health Beauty Life Magazine

ouples desiring to have children can find themselves heartbroken when challenged with infertility issues. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), 6.7 million women or almost 11% of the U.S. population have faced such concerns, which may explain the rise in popularity of fertility services in recent years. In fact, according to the same sources, over 7 million women of childbearing years (15-44) have used some form of fertility service in an attempt to get pregnant.

Overcoming Infertility with IVF

One of the processes used for impregnation is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This is a method in which oocytes (eggs) are fertilized outside of the womb under strict laboratory conditions. The resulting embryos are transferred to the patient’s uterus with the intent to establish a pregnancy. Initially, IVF was developed to overcome infertility due to fallopian tube problems in women but according to Dr. Smotrich at La Jolla IVF, it has become an appropriate treatment for virtually all forms of infertility in both men and women.

“There have been tremendous advancements in IVF over the last several years. The first IVF child was born in London in 1978, but since her birth, there have been over 5 million children born worldwide using this technology. We have been able to learn more and more about egg quality and sperm quality, and when we place them together, embryo quality. This allows us to offer this type of therapy for women and men from all over the world and from all walks of life,” states Dr. Smotrich.

He continues, “From the ability to freeze sperm, which we’ve had for many, many years, to freezing embryos, which we’ve had since 1981, to perfecting the ability to freeze eggs, we help couples who thought they’d never have the ability to have a genetic child.”

C

Page 77: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

A Personal StoryIn the case of Monica and Patrick Dockry, infertility issues had plagued them for years. After conceiving naturally and suffering a series of miscarriages, the couple sought professional assistance from Dr. Smotrich at La Jolla IVF in hopes of making their dreams of having a family come true.

In the Dockry’s case, Dr. Smotrich figured that there was likely a chromosomal issue with the embryos and that Monica’s uterus also had an anatomic situation preventing the embryo from implanting. In her case she had several smooth muscle tumors in the uterus called fibroids. Depending on its position, a fibroid can prevent an embryo from implanting, from continuing to grow and develop, or can even block the blood supply, which would ultimately lead to a miscarriage.

Dr. Smotrich also points out that for women past the age of 35, there’s a higher likelihood of producing embryos that are not chromosomally normal. This scenario runs the risk of the embryo not implanting, or if it does implant, the body may naturally eliminate it. To increase the chances of producing a genetically sound embryo, IVF became a viable fertility option for the Dockrys.

After off-site uterine surgery to remove numerous fibroids, Monica healed well and soon began the IVF treatment, which started with ovarian stimulation. The treatment cycle consisted of a regimen of fertility medications to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple follicles with oocytes. Injectable gonadotropins (usually follicle-stimulating hormone analogues) were given and Monica was closely monitored with blood tests and ovarian ultrasounds to assess the response of her ovaries.

Once the oocytes reached the appropriate maturity, human chorionic gonadotropin (B-hCG) was introduced. This substance acts as an analogue of lutenizing hormone and causes ovulation about 36 hours after the injection, but the egg retrieval procedure takes place just prior to that time in order to recover the eggs from the follicles.

With Monica under anesthesia, her eggs were collected using a needle guided by ultrasound. The follicles were aspirated and the follicular fluid was handed to the on-site IVF laboratory in order for the embryologist to identify the eggs.

Page 78: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

During the egg retrieval, Patrick provided his semen, which was prepared for fertilization by removing the inactive cells and seminal fluid. Once in the laboratory, the oocytes were stripped of the surrounding cells and were then prepared for fertilization. Using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a single sperm was identified and injected into the cytoplasm of the egg, which ensures the highest amount of fertilization possible and thereby produces as many embryos as possible.

Within 24 hours, evidence of fertilization was witnessed through the microscope and the fertilized egg was placed in culture media and was left to grow for about 48 hours. Three days after fertilization embryos can be transferred; however, Dr. Smotrich notes that a day-five embryo at the blastocyst stage provides a higher chance of pregnancy than a day-three embryo transfer.

Embryos were then graded by the embryologist according to the number of cells, growth and degree of fragmentation. The number of embryos to be transferred depends on the number of embryos available and the age of the woman producing the eggs. The rationale is to optimize the chance of pregnancy and minimize the chance of carrying a multiple pregnancy. In Monica and Patrick’s case, they also chose to have a Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) performed. That way only embryos that tested normal are transferred.

The embryos that were graded as being the “best” were loaded into a thin plastic catheter, which was passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterine cavity under ultrasound guidance. The embryos were then deposited in the uterine cavity. After the embryo transfer procedure, a resting position was kept for about an hour and then Monica returned home and went on bed rest for three days.

When implanting the embryo, Dr. Smotrich looks for the signature bright white puff in the ultrasound, which is the reaction in the fluid surrounding the embryo. Finding this point of the process to be a very spiritual moment, with the patient’s permission, Dr. Smotrich recites the following Kabala prayer: Oervu u mala et ha-a retz (“fill the land”), which loosely translates to “be fruitful and multiply” in Hebrew.

During the weeks following the embryo transfer, Monica received progesterone supplementation and was monitored with a series of blood tests. Approximately 12 days after the embryo transfer, the first pregnancy blood test was performed. In the case of a positive pregnancy test, a series of blood tests are carried out to follow the beta HCG levels and about six weeks after the transfer, the first pregnancy ultrasound can be performed.

In case you are wondering how the process went for the Dockrys - meet little Diego, the very welcome result of one of their IVF procedures.

Lateral MovesFor those who have not been able to conceive even after rounds of IVF, Dr. Smotrich points out that there are other options. An embryo can be created from a donor egg either from a younger family member or an anonymous donor and implanted into a healthy uterus. There’s also embryo adoption, where couples with leftover frozen embryos allow them to be taken on by another couple.

“There are tremendous breakthroughs that have occurred over the years that allow us to help a larger range of patients. Whether through egg donation, surrogacy, or genetic screening of embryos, it really has refined our practice,” says Dr. Smotrich.

He continues, “Also, a growing number of women in their 20s and 30s are opting to have their eggs frozen as an insurance policy, as there has been a very high success rate with later fertilization and implantation.”

Fun, Easy Ways to Style Long HairSpring is all about boho-chicness. From super-polished ponies to flower power accessories, when it comes to styling long hair, anything goes!

With a very Iggy Azalea meets I Dream of Jeannie appeal, end a smoothed-back pony with super swingy length.

Start with smooth, dry hair. Brush all hair up on top of the head and gather into a high ponytail. Secure with a hair tie or ponytail clip and then smooth over the surface with a small amount of a creamy pomade to take down any flyaways.

Begin with smooth, side-parted hair and top off with a halo accessory. Use a few drops of treatment oil to tame frizz and add shine.

Page 85: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Start with dry, straight hair. Place accessory across forehead to the ridge of head in back. Take a section of hair from one side and direct it back, tucking it from the top of the accessory and out from underneath. Take a section from behind the ear on that same side and repeat the process. Do the same thing on the other side.

Page 86: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Take smooth, dry, side-parted hair and place a flowered headband or wreath on the top of your head. Take hair from in front and loosely sweep it back and tuck it into the accessory from the top. Repeat on the other side. Finish with a light spray wax for texture and body through the middle and ends.

Begin with smooth, dry, side-parted hair. Place hair accessory on top of head like a headband (long string with feathers dangling from ends). Divide hair into two sections. Incorporating the rope from the accessory, create a very loose three-strand braid with one of the sections. Braid half way down and secure with a hair tie.

Craft a couple of quick and loose braids for a hippie re-do.

Page 87: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Brush through already curly hair with a soft bristled brush. Taking downward strokes, start at the ends and work your way up each section of hair. Apply a small amount of a lightweight shine serum on your hands and work through hair to reshape the curls. Mist with firm hair spray to hold.

Start with curly hair. Take completely random pieces in varying sizes from the ear forward. Twist the individual section back toward the crown and pin in place. The key to this style is imperfection.

Look to fun, textured braids for naturally curly or curl-enhanced hair.

Start with already curly hair. Avoid brushing prior to braiding, as you want to achieve big, messy texture. Pull all hair to one side. Begin a three-strand braid starting between the neck to the shoulder. Keep braid loose so you do not disturb the natural texture. Secure ends with hair tie. Pull opposing sides of the braid to loosen. Finish with light to medium hair spray to secure the hair in place.

Page 88: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Create a side part all the way to the back of the head. Clip left section out of the way. Apply a classic, three-strand braid low on the right section and secure the ends with a hair tie. Twist the left section toward the right and wrap hair around the braid like a rope. Secure with another hair tie.

Divide dry hair into three sections: Bottom at the neck, middle and top of head. Starting with the bottom section and working forward, tease hair at the root. Smooth over the surface while rolling hair under and pin into place. Repeat with each of the next three sections. Cover any holes by pulling both sides of each roll. Secure in place with a small amount of dry wax on the sides and a super hold hair finishing spray all over.

Page 89: Health Beauty Life - SPRING 2015

Using a Curling Iron: Start with dry, slept-on or air-dried hair. Take 2-4 inch sections, hold by the ends and, starting 4-6 inches out from the roots, wrap section around a 1.5-2 inch curling iron. Direct all sections away from the face. Once all sections are done run fingers through to soften hair.

Using a Flat Iron: Begin with dry, slept-on or air-dried hair. Take uniform 2-3 inch sections 6-8 inches away from the scalp (so the curl holds better). Insert section into a flat iron, clamp down, roll the iron 180 degrees and then slide the iron with some tension through the ends. Once all sections are done, brush through for a looser, more volumized finish.

Start with smooth, dry hair. Create a precise center part and smooth all hair back into a low pony at the hairline. Secure with a hair tie. Finish with light amount of a wet gel and shine spray cocktailed together and lightly smooth flyaways down.

Extra Tip: For a more polished finish, take a one-inch section of hair from the ponytail and wrap around the hair tie and then secure with a bobby pin.

Tucked-back in front, this fun option for long hair flaunts lavish length in back.

Start with smooth, center-parted hair. Isolate a two-inch section all around the hairline and direct that section back, placing into a low ponytail. Secure with a hair tie. Allow the rest of the hair to fall on top of the pony.

Offering a healthy and slightly spicy twist on classic Filipino fare, Genesis proudly serves up a traditional dish called Pancit. Generally served at festive family occasions, this Filipino comfort food has many variations. Here is Genesis’ personal favorite, with a healthy, gluten-free variation.

• 3 8 oz packs rice bihon noodles

• 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken, cubed

• 1 lb peeled shrimp

• 4 Tbsp olive oil

• 2 cloves garlic, crushed and minced

• 1 purple onion, diced

• 1 c. carrots, sliced

• 1 c. green beans, sliced

• 2 c. organic chicken broth

• ¼ c. tamari

• 2 c. celery, diced

• 3 c. cabbage, chopped

• 1/2 c. shallots, chopped

• pepper, to taste

• red chili pepper, to taste

• sea salt, to taste

• ¼ c. green onions, chopped

• lemon slices

Soak noodles in a bowl of water for 15 minutes and then drain. Heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil, add the chopped shallots, sauté until crispy and then set aside.

In a non-stick wok heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil and sauté garlic and onion. Add chicken and cook until golden brown. Add shrimp, carrots, green beans, and celery, seasoning to taste with sea salt, pepper, and chili pepper. Pour in organic chicken broth and tamari and then bring to a boil. Add cabbage and more chili pepper to taste and then reduce heat and simmer. Add noodles and drained shallots, simmer while stirring continuously until noodles are soft and clear.

Dish it up on a flat serving tray and garnish with chopped green onions and lemon slices. Now grab a fork and twist it up!
