Steven Tyler has been contributing

to pop culture for years as the

lead singer of Aerosmith, and a

new generation is discovering Tyler as

a judge on “American Idol,” but it’s the

feathers that have people talking.

Lori Lopez, owner of Wild Orchids the Salon in Antioch, has been managing manes and hypnotizing hair for 35 years, but she’s never seen a trend take off quite like feather extensions, a style popularized by Tyler earlier this year.

“Featherlocks have been around for a few years, but no one really knew about them until Steven Tyler stepped out with this huge feather in his hair,” Lopez said. “It got people’s attention. It’s very rock ’n’ roll. People started going to salons asking how they can get that look. ‘American Idol’ started up in January and by February this trend was like wildfi re.”

Lopez said clients ask about feather extensions on a daily basis, and the best part about the new trend is that applying the

extensions is easy, painless and takes a matter of minutes to complete. The toughest part is fi guring out what style you want. Lopez has feathers in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Some are thin and blend naturally with hair; others are wide and feature a bold color that makes the feather pop in the coiffe. Either way, installation is easy. Glue is applied to the quills of the feathers, which is then attached to a hair extension bead laced into the hair and

New pharmacy off ers old-fashioned service

Imagine walking into your pharmacy

and being greeted by name. It might

sound like something out of the ’50s,

but it’s a reality in 2011 at Brentwood’s

City Center Pharmacy. Business owners

Steve Boss, Saifi Raniwala and Consuelo

“Chelo” Suarez aim to create an atmo-

sphere where, in pharmacist Boss’ words,

“The patients actually like coming in.”

“This is what a real pharmacy should be like,” said Raniwala, the store’s other pharma-cist. “Its patients should feel comfortable. A lot of patients have our cell phone numbers. It helps them have confi dence in us.”

Boss echoed the sentiment: “We want to be approachable. We want them to look at us as being a friend. We’re the only old-time, community-type pharmacy in the area.”

Business manager Suarez also empha-sized the store’s welcoming ambience.

Well, at fi rst, my wife asked me not to write this. We had a big discus-sion about it. Finally, she under-stood what I was trying to do, and actually helped me write this letter to you.

Here’s the thing. In my offi ce, most of the people that come in to see me tell me they’ve “tried everything.”

They’ve had “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. That’s not what most people are looking for.

Health, or the lack of it, very often has simple causes, and very reason-able corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, be-fore I tell you more, let me tell you something about me…

I remember it like it was yesterday. I’m the “athletic type” and like most young guys, I think that noth-ing can go wrong. That’s when I’m hit with a dose of reality. I’m playing basketball when it happens. As I’m going for a rebound, I get pushed. I land hard on my lower back and feel a ‘pop’. But, there’s more… I’m in so much pain that I can barely move. I go to see my medical doctor, but all he can do is give me drugs for the pain. But, that doesn’t help. Three weeks later I’m still in pain. I’m frustrated and scared that I may never play sports again. Now, listen to this…

A friend of mine convinces me to give his doctor a try. This new doc-tor does an exam, takes some fi lms, and then ‘adjusts’ my spine. The adjustment doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and within a

week, I feel much better! Oh, did I mention that this doctor is a chiro-practor?

Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his offi ce, that I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!

Back to what my wife (at fi rst) didn’t want me to write. It’s that chiropractic is one of the biggest “secrets” in health care. Few peo-ple (relatively, only 10% have been to a chiropractor) know about it. And, many of the rest could be helped, if they only knew the true story. So, I often feel like shouting it from the mountaintop! Is that “professional?” Well, maybe it is, or maybe not. But, I’ve decided people should know.

For the last eleven years, people from Brentwood and the surround-ing area have come to see me with their back problems. They also come to me with their:

• Headaches• Migraines• Chronic pain• Neck pain• Shoulder/arm pain• Whiplash from car accidents• Carpal tunnel syndrome• Hip pain• Elbow pain• Numbness in limbs• Athletic injuriesjust to name a few…

Here’s what some of your neighbors had to say:

“During my pregnancy, I suffered from low back pain and sciatica. Dr. Jardin helped me become pain free!” (Kim M.)

“I had neck pain, tingling and numb-ness in my arms and hands. Thanks to Dr. Jardin, the pain is gone. I feel great!” (Diane W.)

“I suffered with constant TMJ pain and headaches with dizziness. I spent over 25 years trying different things to help and Dr. Jardin’s adjust-ments have been the most effective!” (Patti W.)

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. The truth is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specifi c spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. Of course, all people respond differently to care, but we get terrifi c results. It’s as simple as that!

Exciting Offer – Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problem, and not just cover it up with drugs. When you are one of the fi rst 20 people to call and schedule a new patient exam (by July 1, 2011) you’ll receive that entire exam for $37. That’s with consultation, exam, any necessary x-rays, full report of my fi ndings….the whole ball of wax, and there’s no hidden fees. But, call right away because we expect to be fl ooded with calls as this exam normally costs $249. Again, there’s only 20 of these slots, so don’t miss out (by law, this offer excludes Medicare/Medicaid benefi ciaries).

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunder-standing about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifi cations…I’m a gradu-ate of Western States Chiropractic. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to entire families. For the past eleven years, I’ve been taking care of your neighbors in Brentwood. I just have that low exam fee to help more people who need care.

My assistants are Morgan and Esmeralda, and they are both re-ally great people. Our offi ce is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an ex-ceptional fee. Our offi ce is called JARDIN FAMILY CHIROPRAC-TIC and it’s at 7351-A Brentwood Boulevard (we are across the park-ing lot from McDonald’s, next to the Dollar Store). Our phone number is 925-516-5813. Call Mor-gan, Esmeralda, or me today for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you and God Bless. -Dan Jardin, D.C.

P.S. When accompanied by the fi rst, I am also offering the second family member this same examina-tion for only $27.

P.P.S. Can you imagine not having to wait at a doctor’s offi ce? Well, your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why we have a no-wait poli-cy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

P.P.P.S. Of course, all people re-spond differently to care.

What started out as a

shared studio space

and a dream has now

become one of the largest martial arts

academies in the East Bay.

Mixed Martial Arts fi ghter Crosley Gracie, a member of the famed Gracie family known for founding Brazilian jiu-jitsu, was able to open his 7,000-square-foot academy at 3291 Walnut Blvd. in Brentwood in 2008 after subleasing

a nearby space for a few years. Opening an academy where he could teach his family’s methods to others had been a longtime goal for the Rio de Janeiro native.

Since its inception, the Crosley Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy has taken root and grown.

The academy trains athletes of all ages and body types in jiu-jitsu as well as muay Thai kickboxing. Adults and kids who train at the academy have gone on to fi ght for the gold at tournaments throughout the state. Brazilian jiu-jitsu, an art largely started by Crosley’s grandfather, the late Carlos Gracie, teaches

“We’re really friendly,” she said. “We’re comfortable with our customers, and it’s family-oriented.” Customers often begin chat-ting with the staff and each other during the brief 15 minutes it takes to fi ll a prescription and keep conversing after they’ve received their medication. “An hour later, they’re still there,” she laughed.

Boss and Raniwala met at the University of the Pacifi c, Stockton pharmacy school, though they later found they had been competitors when both worked at nearby hotels. They went their separate ways until 2008, when Raniwala noticed that Pittsburg was ripe for an independent pharmacy. He called Boss and the two opened their fi rst location in August of 2008. Raniwala had worked with Suarez before and invited her to join him at the Pittsburg pharmacy. This year, all three of them launched a new store in Brentwood.

According to Suarez, their unique backgrounds have infl uenced the format of their pharmacy. “Steve’s military background means everything must be in line,” she said. “It makes the business run effi ciently. Saifi brings that personable warmth and comfort,” in addition to an entrepreneurial spirit.

One of the greatest challenges faced by independent pharmacies is the misconcep-tion that their products cost more – even for customers with prescription insurance – than those of larger pharmacies. “It’s not true,” said Raniwala. “Their co-pay here is the same as anywhere else.”

“The only difference is the customer

service,” said Suarez.City Center Pharmacy offers a special

service called prescription compounding. Doctors can write a prescription of several medications in different amounts, and the pharmacy will make a single pill or cream instead of providing multiple pills. Because customers are forced to drive to Concord to get prescription compounding, Raniwala, Boss and Suarez are happy to provide it locally. The service allows pills to be replaced by creams or sprays, or by lollipops or gummies for kids. The pharmacy also sells medication for dogs, cats, horses and other animals, and can create prescriptions in chicken, lamb or beef fl avors.

The store also offers over-the-counter medications, diabetes equipment, mobility devices such as walkers, plus free programs such as prescription delivery to local areas, needle disposal containers for diabetics and disposal of leftover medications. City Center Pharmacy can also package medications separately, printed with times and dates, to help patients remember to take them. The owners also contribute to community service programs such as Meals on Wheels and fall-prevention programs at retirement homes.

City Center Pharmacy is located at 50 Eagle Rock Way, Suite C in Brentwood, off Balfour Road near the Highway 4 Bypass. Spanish translation is available. Store hours are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; closed Sundays. The pharmacy can be reached by phone at 925-240-9777 or by e-mail at [email protected].

pressed closed to hold it in place. As long as hair is cared for properly, the feather extension should stay in place for up to four months.

“It’s so simple,” Lopez said. “And the best part is that the featherlock is like any hair extension. You can wash it, dry it, curl it and fl at iron it without damaging it. As long as you don’t pull on it, the feather will stay in place.”

Lopez believes the simplicity is what draws a wide range of customers to her salon. She’s applied feathers to children and grand-mas alike. “Older women really like this trend. It’s a way to do something wild without going too far. It makes them feel young.”

Joelle Garner, a mother of three from Brentwood, tried feather extensions in April on a dare from a girlfriend and loves the new look. “At fi rst I thought I was going to look silly, but the feather extensions are really fun. I got brown feathers so that it blends with my hair, but I might get new ones after these come out. Maybe I’ll be a little braver and try blue or green.”

While the easy application and variety of feathers makes this trend popular with women of all ages, the price is also appeal-

ing. Lopez buys her feathers from Condition Culture, which sells its high-quality feath-ers only to salons, but charges only $6 per feather – a bargain compared to the typical wholesale price of $10 to $15. Lopez keeps the prices low as a way to draw new custom-ers to her salon. For her returning customers, it’s a new way to change up a look without doing anything extreme, such as cutting and coloring.

To remove the extension, clients may either return to the salon for extraction or pinch the hair bead with pliers to pop it open and remove the extension. Lopez recommends that clients keep their feathers in case they’d like to wear them again.

If you’d rather try the trend on your own, there are companies that sell feathers and the necessary tools. But you’ll pay hundreds for a pack of authentic rooster feathers, the most common feather used to create this style. Go to Sephora, located inside the JCPenny in Antioch, and Sultra feather extensions will cost you only $25 for three. Feather extensions can also be found at www.etsy.com, a website dedicated to the sale of unique handmade fashions.
