Health and Physical Activity InstituteSession Descriptions

13Co-Sponsored by the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (VAHPERD)

Monday, July 9, 2018

8-10 am, Bike Smart! Virginia Vicki Miller, Beneline Williams & Adam Otstot

8:30-9:20 am, Badminton Bonanza (Large Groups) Charla Krahnke, OPEN, Ocean Isle, North Carolina Standards and outcomes-based progressions are utilized as

we perform Badminton drills/skills/assessments and fitness activities with large groups. OPENphysed.org Badminton lessons will be used as we discuss physical literacy and utilizing technology in secondary classes.

8:30-9:20 am, Progressing from Foot Skills to Soccer in Elementary Physical Education

Nick Kline, OPEN, Cortland, New York Experience the scope and sequence of OPEN’s Elementary

Soccer modules with developmentally appropriate activities, assessments, and cognitive question sets. OPEN’s soccer content is aligned with the VA SOLs with a focus on taking students from SOL K.1.d through SOL 5.1.a using fun, meaningful, and rigorous content that will both challenge and motivate your students.

8:30-9:20 am, Hitting SOLs with Limited Equipment Ashley Grimes, OPEN, Parrish, Florida The content for this session was created in response to

the 2017 hurricanes that impacted hundreds of physical education programs. After the storms, many equipment inventories had been ruined or lost, classes were displaced, and planning periods were being used for recovery efforts. The result of our work has benefited school throughout the US with limited resources.

8:30-9:20 am, It’s an OPEN Dance Party! Brandon Herwick, OPEN, Glenmont, New York As physical educators, one of our main objectives is to

encourage students to use physical activities as vehicles for self-expression. The Hopi Indians tell us that “to watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak.” Although most of our students will never become performance artists, they will most certainly have the opportunity to dance during celebrations and social gatherings. This session is designed to help teachers plant seeds of expression and enjoyment, so students will have the skills and confidence to dance whenever a dance party presents itself.

9:30-10:20 am, Learning Lacrosse in Physical Education (grades 3-5) Aaron Hart & Rich Wiles, OPEN, Cortland New York &

Anne Arundel County, Maryland Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United

States. OPEN’s Lacrosse Module for Grades 3 through 5 was created by Aaron Hart (OPENPhysEd.org) and Joel White (3X All-American at Syracuse and 3X Major League Lacrosse All-Star). In this workshop participants will unpack the basics of the game with a focus on basic ball control skills (cradling, scooping, catching, and throwing).

1-1:50 pm, Best Practices for Discussing Testicular Cancer with High School Males

Justin Birckbichler, Spotsylvania County Cancer doesn’t sound like a topic to discuss with high

schoolers, but unfortunately over 50% of testicular cancer cases occur in men 15-35, which includes high school boys and recent grads. According to numerous studies, this is not a topic that is often discussed either by educators or doctors, which can be a deadly mistake. In this session, you’ll learn from a testicular cancer survivor and men’s health activist on easy, appropriate ways to discuss this “touchy” topic with high school males, including a PSA featuring a high school survivor and produced by high school film department students.

Justin Birckbichler is a men’s health activist, testicular cancer survivor, and an ITRT in Spotsylvania County. From being diagnosed in November 2016 at the age of 25, to finishing chemo in January 2017, to being cleared in remission in March, he has been passionate about sharing his story to spread awareness about testicular cancer and promote open conversation about men’s health.

Megan Baner, 200RYT Yoga Alliance Just as a rubber band that is over extended loses its

functionality, so do the muscles in our body. No matter how much we can lift, how quickly we learn or how far or fast we can move, when the muscles in our body become tight, they strain the connective tissue, pulling on each other and our skeletal system in uncomfortable ways. When our body

becomes uncomfortable or injured, our mind becomes uncomfortable and less productive. A physical yoga practice (asana) is an intelligent and safe way to move the body through dynamic stretches that build coordination, range of motion and, thus, strength.

By regularly working to increase physical flexibility, children can strengthen their body and mind while building a set of skills that can be used anywhere, at any time to think and act more clearly.
