Nominate someone for the 2016 Minister of Health Volunteer Awards

Nominations are open for the 2016 Minister of Health Volunteer Awards. The Awards, which are in their fourth year, recognise the thousands of unsung heroes who support New Zealand’s health and disability services. From helping people to navigate their way around hospitals and health services, to visiting isolated older people in their homes and numerous other activities, health volunteers make life better for New Zealanders in many ways, often without seeking any recognition. Outstanding achievement awards will be presented in the following categories: Health Care Provider Service, Community or NGO Health Service, Maori/Pacific Health Service, Youth Health Volunteer and Long Service. There are individual and team awards in each category, except Long Service which is an individual award. There is also an overall Health Volunteer of the Year.

Nominations close on 8 April 2016. The Awards will be presented during National Volunteer Week, 19 – 25 June. More information, including the nomination form, is available on www.volunteerawards.health.govt.nz.

Progress on New Zealand Health Strategy refreshThe draft update of the New Zealand Health Strategy received 415 formal submissions. A wide-ranging consultation late in 2015, involved more than 100 forums, workshops, meetings, Hui and Fono reaching more than 2,000 people. As well, more than 7,000 people visited the consultation website. Since consultation closed on 4 December 2015, Ministry of Health staff have been analysing submissions and feedback, and incorporating changes into the Strategy and Roadmap of Actions, in

Other government agenciesChildren’s Action Plan - Help for difficult conversationsSome new resource videos for practitioners about having difficult conversations have been developed. The videos have been prepared by the Children's Action Plan and Children's Commissioner, Russell Wills.

In these videos, Dr Wills discusses the difficult situations that practitioners often face when they have concerns about families and clients, and the impact that family violence, drug use or mental illness might be having on their children. Having honest conversations with families about seeking further help from other trusted professionals, including CYF, Police, specialist services, Children's Teams and social services, can greatly improve engagement in the long term. Dr Wills discusses the concern that many health professionals have about breaching confidentiality or

privacy, and offers practical advice in a series of demonstrations about how to approach difficult conversations and decisions.

NGO informationShine and Presbyterian Support Northern Joining forces against family violenceThe domestic abuse charity, Shine, is to merge with Presbyterian Support Northern (PSN). From 1 July 2016 Shine will deliver services as part of PSN alongside Family Works and Enliven.

The move will help both organisations make a bigger difference for those affected by family violence. Shine’s services keep women and children safe and help abusers change their behaviour. Family Works provides longer term counselling and social work support for families in crisis. By combining expertise, they'll be able to increase the wellbeing of families experiencing violence across the upper North Island.

The merge will also create opportunities to extend training and research services for others working to prevent family violence.

Shine has partnered with Presbyterian Support Northern since 2011. A Family Works staff member based at Shine works closely with Shine advocates to provide follow up counselling and social support for victims of domestic abuse.http://www.psn.org.nz/joining-forces-with-shine

Unitec Not for Profit Management Programme to close Due to shifting priorities Unitec will be phasing out delivery of the Graduate Diploma in Not for Profit Management before the end of 2016. Delivered in 5 centres around the country, this was New Zealand’s only qualification specifically targeting not for profit sector managers and leaders.

Since it started over 20 years ago hundreds of organisation leaders have graduated. A learning community where graduates and students can come together to share best practice and build individual and organisation capability has developed. The end of this course will leave a gap in the education sector for not for profit managers and leaders who are seeking values based leadership development that specifically addresses the complexity of the environment community organisations work in.

In response to the closure of the programme the teaching team have set up the Centre for Not for Profit Leadership as a means to keep the kaupapa of the programme going. They will shortly survey the sector to determine what type of leadership development organisations are seeking and will develop training and mentoring programmes in response.

Hearing Therapy Service even easier for people to accessThe national Hearing Therapy Service, a free service for people needing help with managing hearing loss, is now available to GPs via e-referral.

Hearing Therapy, provided by charitable trust Life Unlimited and funded by the Ministry of Health, can now be found in the CareSelect referral system on www.healthlink.net. Referrals can also be made via the online form at http://lifeunlimited.net.nz/hearing/referral-form or by phoning 0800 008 011.

Hearing Therapy helps people manage the impact of hearing loss on their lives – at home, at work and in social situations. A trained hearing therapist will work with a patient and their family or whanau to develop strategies to help them manage living with a hearing loss, as well as providing information and advice on assistive technology and referrals to other health providers if required. Hearing therapists can also provide initial screening tests for people who suspect they might have hearing loss.

The Service, available New Zealand-wide, does not sell or fit hearing aids but works closely with audiologists where appropriate. Hearing Therapists hold the National Diploma in Hearing Therapy and are members of the Hearing Therapist Association of New Zealand (HTANZ).

Hearing Therapy Services is available free for all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 16 years and over. Life Unlimited is a not-for-profit charitable organisation governed by a board of trustees. For more information: www.lifeunlimited.net.nz/hearing or www.facebook.com/hearingtherapy
