Letter from the Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends:

The year 2009 was a bittersweet one for Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

This year the organization’s roots grew deeper, and its reach widened.

I am proud to report that in just five years, HAAM has served nearly

2,000 musicians, many of whom tell us that HAAM has saved their lives.

However, in October the loss of Robin R. Shivers, the founder and driving

force behind the creation and success of HAAM, was devastating. It was

Robin’s dream to find affordable healthcare services for Austin’s low-

income, uninsured working musicians, and she did just that. With HAAM

Robin created a first-of-its-kind model for bringing community resources

together to support musicians, who are an integral part of Austin’s

economy and culture. We are indebted to Robin for her vision, initiative

and leadership. She set the organization up for success and left us with an

amazing foundation from which we can grow. Our board of directors and

staff members are dedicated to not only continuing the services that Robin

built but also strengthening and growing the organization into one that will

make Robin proud. I hope you will take a moment to read the stories about

Robin throughout this report. She had a tremendous impact on us all.

The year was one of growth for HAAM. Our affiliate service providers, Seton

Family of Hospitals, St. David’s Foundation and The SIMS Foundation,

provided more care to more musicians than prior years. Additionally, we launched a new hearing health program after

musicians told us that this service was crucial for their profession but financially out of reach. Thanks to grants from The

Cain Foundation and Austin Community Foundation, The HEAR Project, with affiliate service provider Estes Audiology,

began in August. At quarterly clinics, musicians receive education and are screened and fit for custom earplugs. The

response has been tremendous. One musician told us, “I’ve been exposing my most important musical asset to excessive

sound levels for years. I’m looking forward to keeping the remainder of my hearing intact.”

The growth in demand for services and support from the community allowed HAAM to hire its second full-time employee

in 2009. We welcome Jennifer Stowe as assistant director of services. We also saw changes on the board of directors.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to board members Carol Clark, Marsha Cook and Jesus Garza, whose service

guided HAAM from infancy until now. Thank you for your many gifts! Welcome to new board members Chris Adams,

Earl Maxwell, Madge Vasquez and Howard Yancy.

I continue to be inspired by the generosity of the Austin community. You turned out in record numbers for Corporate

Battle of the Bands and HAAM Benefit Day. You bring HAAM’s mission to life with your gifts. A special thank-you goes to

Marcia Ball, who chose HAAM as a beneficiary of her birthday bash. Marcia introduced her friends and fans from around

the world to HAAM, and we are grateful to all who attended and contributed. We hope you’ll join us for our 2010 special

events: Corporate Battle of the Bands, Tuesday, April 20, and the fifth HAAM Benefit Day on Tuesday, September 21.

As 2009 comes to an end, so does my term as chairman. It has been an honor to serve in this position. The work of HAAM

is incredibly important to our community. I love the abundance of live music in Austin, but even more important, what

drew me to board service was knowing how important music is to Austin’s economic well-being. HAAM is in an excellent

financial and organizational position as we go forward. We have nearly a year’s worth of reserves and are known across

the country as a successful model for community health care. Please join me in welcoming Tim Taylor of Jackson Walker

LLP as HAAM’s new chairman of the board. Tim has been at the front of the efforts to make every HAAM Benefit Day

bigger and better than the last. He has a proven record of leadership, and he is the ideal candidate to lead HAAM in the

years ahead.

In 2010 HAAM celebrates its fifth anniversary. Knowing Robin, she probably did imagine how strong an organization

HAAM would be in only five years. We will continue her legacy into the future and keep music in Austin alive and well!

1,419 prescriptions

703 hospital services, including outpatient, inpatient and emergency room procedures

100 referrals to specialists

St. David’s Foundation provided:

586 dental visits to 364 patients

The SIMS Foundation provided:

more than 2,800 sessions of counseling, psychiatric and addiction-recovery services

Estes Audiology provided:

Screening, education and fittings for 180 musicians, who then received custom earplugs

Revenue and expenses figures do not include the market value of

healthcare services (estimated to be $2.8 million in 2009) provided by

HAAM’s affiliate service providers, Seton Family of Hospitals, St. David’s

Foundation and The SIMS Foundation, to HAAM enrollees.

HAAM is a special-project fund of the Austin Community Foundation.

issues caught early because they went in for a routine

checkup. Before HAAM most musicians had a ‘don’t get

sick’ policy; now should something happen, we have

somewhere to get help.”

“I had been meeting with a group of people for about a

month to talk about how we could help musicians access

health care. Then I got a phone call from Robin. She said,

‘I hear you’ve been working on a plan to help musicians

with their health care. Would you come to a meeting I’ve

put together?’ Overnight HAAM was born. Robin was

able to bring key leaders to the table, and they had very

real healthcare services and were ready to make them

available to musicians. Through the generosity of Seton

and St. David’s, we immediately had 500 spots for health

and dental care for musicians. Now HAAM has helped

nearly 2,000 musicians. HAAM is Robin’s legacy. Robin

understood the importance of bettering the Austin music

community, and we are all better for having known her.”

HAAM Benefit Day

“We don’t have a storefront, so we did in-store tastings at

the two Austin Whole Foods Markets and donated 100%

of the Benefit Day sales from these stores. This year sales

were double what they would normally be on a weekday.

In addition to being more effective than print advertising,

participating in HAAM Benefit Day is a whole lot more

fun! It allows our customers and our company to give

back to the people who make our hometown one of a

kind. We love HAAM!”

The fourth annual HAAM Benefit Day held on Tuesday,

September 22, was a citywide celebration of live music

and the talented musicians who make Austin and its

culture so rich. Nearly 200 Austin-area businesses

showed their support by pledging 5 percent of the day’s

proceeds or making cash donations to HAAM. More than

100 musical acts, most with members who belong to

HAAM, performed at businesses throughout the city to

increase sales and raise awareness about HAAM’s mission.

Topfer Family Foundation showed its support with a grant

(up to $25,000) that matched all individual donations on

HAAM Benefit Day. Even on a very rainy day in Austin,

the community showed great generosity with individual

donations well exceeding the matching grant. Altogether

2009 HAAM Benefit Day raised $164,000 for musicians’

health. Thank you, Austin!

The second annual Corporate Battle of the Bands fundraiser

and concert was held Tuesday, April 21. Eleven bands made

up of business professionals who play music as a hobby

competed against each other in front of celebrity judges

and a packed house at Antone’s to raise awareness and

funds for HAAM.

2009 Special Events Marcia Ball’s Great Big Birthday Bash

Marcia Ball celebrated her 60th birthday in style

during Valentine’s Day weekend, and she chose Health

Alliance for Austin Musicians as a co-beneficiary of

the festivities. It was a weekend of fun that included

a Rocking Voodoo Party, a Sweetheart Ball and a

Pianorama Brunch. Marcia’s friends, family and fans

came from around the world to celebrate with her

and showed their generosity and support for our local

musicians. It was an incredible weekend of live music!

Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association

The Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association once again

showed its support for local musicians by donating a

portion of the proceeds from its annual Homecoming

Concert and Texas Independence Shootout to HAAM

during the HAAM Benefit Day kickoff event. Texas

Heritage Songwriters’ Association and its board

members have made a tremendous impact on the

health of our musicians through annual donations to

HAAM. We are grateful for your support!

Good Eggs & HAAM

Good Eggs & HAAM is a group of young professionals that

are passionate about live music, understand that musicians

are a unique and important cultural and economic resource

for Austin and have a desire to give back and support

musicians’ health care. Good Eggs educate the community

about HAAM and its mission and support the organization

through an annual monetary contribution. Additionally,

Good Eggs participate in social networking events

and fundraising events throughout the year that allow

opportunities to advocate for musicians’ health.
