My Healing Shawl StoryI started knitting my first healing shawl when I got

sad news that a dear friend of mine passed away. I

needed consolation. I needed reassurance. I needed

healing. And so, I started knitting my Healing Shawl.

This shawl took me almost a year to knit. This was

not intentional, it just worked out this way. And by

the time the shawl was done I felt that deep black

grief transformed itself into something thinner,

lighter and a lot more bearable. As the colors of the

shawl grew darker, my heart became lighter.

Construction and other technical information

This shawl was knit top-down, starting with a garter tab. It is a very easy shawl to knit. The entire

pattern can be broken into the multiples of three stitches. It is easy to remember and if you wish

so, it is very easy to upsize. Just go on adding more pattern repeats. After the initial set up of the

pattern each section of this pattern is eight rows. First four rows establish the new section of the

lace pattern. The next four rows tell you exactly what and until when you need to do to complete

this section. I tried to make this pattern as clear as possible, so even very new, beginning knitters

would not be intimidated by it. If you can knit and purl and count to three, you can successfully

knit this shawl. You might decide to make it into a small scarf - feel free to stop at any point of

the pattern that seems appropriate. As an “all or nothing” person, I usually stop when my yarn

runs out.

There are three lines of paired increases. Down the back and on the shoulders. Also a line of

single increases at each edge. Since this is a lace shawl I chose simple YO (Yarn Over) increases.

Materials

I have knit four different Healing Shawls so far. And used different kinds of yarn. My notes in this

section are just a suggestion. Play with your yarn, see what it wants to become. Remember,

shawls should be drapey, they should hug the shoulders of the wearer, not stand apart because

they are knit too tightly. You want your stitches to be light and airy, not tight and choking.

Here is the list of the yarns and needles I used:

Yarn - Flowers, by Yarn Art

Fingering weight

250 grams 1000 meters

55% cotton, 45% acrylic

Circular needle US3 - I used my Addi Lace needle.

Yarn - Stroll Glimmer, by Knit Picks

Fingering weight

70% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon, 5%

Stellina

50 grams, 231 yards. I used 4 skeins.

Circular needle US2 - for the base of the shawl, then

US3 for the rest of it. Also Addi Lace. Looking back, I

should have used a US4 needle. It would have made

the shawl even better.

Yarn - Heather/Dyed Prime Alpaca from Village

Spinning and Weaving

DK weight

100% alpaca

226 grams, 608 meters

Needles - US6, Addi Bamboo.

Markers

I used lots and lots of stitch markers. This way I did not have to wonder where I was in the

pattern or how many repeats were to the next increase. I use tiny beaded stitch markers I make

myself. They are almost weightless and make my work look pretty. If you are interested in them

you can get in touch with me. But you can use anything you want - from paper clips to goomy

loops. As long as your markers stay put - all is well.

As I said before, you can make this shawl as large as you want and you can also stop knitting it at

any place of the pattern.

Finishing

I finished my first three shawls with a Crochet Picot Cast Off. For the fourth shawl I chose to do a

Knitting Picot Cast Off. Both finishes look very good. I found crochet Cast Off easier and less fussy

but that is mainly a personal preference. Of course, you can use any other Cast Off you like, as

long as it is not going to pull or distort the fabric.

Keeping the last loop on the hook, insert hook into the next knitted stitch, pull the yarn through

both loops. 2 stitches bound off. Insert your hook into the next knit stitch, pull the yarn through

both loops, chain 3,insert hook into the center of the base st, YO, pull through all loops on the

hook. 3 stitches bound off. Continue this way until all stitches are bound off. Cut the yarn leaving

a long tail, pull the yarn through the last loop and tag. Weave in the end using a tapestry needle.

Knit Picot Cast Off

After you knit the last stitch of the shawl, Cast On 2 stitches on your needle, K2, Sl first stitch

knit. Put the leftover stitch back on your right needle. Cast On 2 more stitches. K2, Sl first stitch

over the second, Knit 1 more stitch from the right needle, Sl first stitch over the stitch you just

knit. Knit 1 more stitch from the right needle, Sl first stitch over the stitch you just knit. Move the

left over stitch back to the needle. Continue doing this until all the stitches are bound off. Cut the

yarn leaving a long tail, pull the yarn through the last loop and tag. Weave in the end using a

tapestry needle.
