After learning millions of people die every year because of a lack of clean water, Shanon challenged his friends to join him in an effort to drill wells in Africa and India. This initial effort, and the sense of responsibility to help those less fortunate helped to bring the Living Water Project to life in 2001. Shanon was able to see his aspirations become reality as wells were drilled in Kenya and India. Sadly, in May of 2002, Shanon lost his battle with a rare form of cancer and Living Water lost its founder and visionary. Almost two years later, Jon Lee (pictured here) endeavored to renew Shanon’s commitment to providing clean water and helped to form a Board of Directors for Living Water. Jon and Shanon were friends, having both attended the same Nashville area congregation. It was through this friendship that Shanon was able to inspire Jon to “live an uncommon life.” Jon says, “He was always questioning the status quo and constantly disturbed by the injustices in this world. I knew this was too great a cause, with too much need to just let his vision fade away.” These efforts re-energized Living Water Project and they have since gone on to provide 32 wells in 11 countries! Through the help of Healing Hands International, five wells have been drilled in Haiti with plans for five more to be drilled. This collaboration between Living Water and HHI’s water development ministry has enabled both organizations to reach out to those who are in need of this life-saving gift. This is not the only group that has been inspired to bring “living water” to the world. We have been humbled this year by stories of special individuals and congregations across the map who are allowing God to use their hands to bring healing through clean water. Shannon Tobias from Temecula, CA is another example. She contacted us to let us know that she was organizing rummage sales to raise money for a water well in Haiti. Her mother was concerned when Madison told her of her plan to host a bake sale in order to raise the $4,800. Was she shocked when Madison walked away from that bake sale with $4,382.76! Marilyn Holland was one of the founding Board members for Rapha International and served on the board until the merger with Healing Hands in 2010. During that time, she helped establish the inventory tracking procedures for the ministry, set up the three different warehouse facilities from which the ministry operated, and managed the office and those who helped there. She also managed all of the warehouse volunteers. Marilyn has worked at least two days a week at Rapha/Healing Hands throughout those years and many times much more than that. She has organized fund-raising events and volunteer recognition events. She has loaded containers to worldwide destinations and coordinated shipping and customs. She has dedicated countless hours to helping formulate the direction of the ministry. Marilyn introduced the Magi Project to Rapha and made it an integral part of the ministry. She has guided not just the collection and distribution of supplies and equipment but has also been the catalyst for getting the organization involved in disaster relief worldwide. She was the strong voice for immediate response to the recent disaster in Japan and was instrumental in putting Healing Hands in touch with those on the ground in Japan who helped when others were waiting. The same was true with the Indonesian tsunami a few years ago. But Marilyn’s heart for service is not limited to the Healing Hands ministry. She and her husband, Ron, served as missionaries to the Philippines for 12 years. She also served as a member of the Missions Ministry at her

congregation for 12 years. She is active in the Let’s Start Talking program as well as a ministry called Come Before Winter that works to encourage Christians around the world. Marilyn and her husband have two daughters who have served in the Come Before Winter ministry and one also served as a missionary to Mexico for six years. They also have two wonderful grandsons. Some people are "movers and shakers," but that is not her style. She is more of a pusher and a prodder of the movers and shakers. Her determination to help those who are hurting is only exceeded by her heart to do the same. Without volunteers like Marilyn, this ministry would not be possible. Do you have a heart for helping? Are you looking for a way to reach out to “the least of these?” Please consider volunteering at one of our facilities. For the Ft. Worth office, contact Brenda at (817) 536-3383 and for the Nashville office, contact Cindy at (615) 832-2000.

Dorcas Workshops Are “Sew” Fun “In Joppa there was a disciple named Dorcas; she was always doing good and helping the poor.” - Acts 9:36. This verse is what the Dorcas ministry is all about. Healing Hands is inviting all modern day Dorcas’s to a special event. Women know what a blessing it is to share our talents with others. With this thought in mind, HHI is planning a Dorcas Workshop. It will be an opportunity for you to meet other ladies, learn new sewing techniques and get “hands-on” instruction. In an effort to accommodate as many as possible, the workshops will be offered on two days for you to choose from - August 11th or 12th. The cost is $5 per person to cover lunch. If you would like to attend or get more information, contact Lori at (615) 832-2000 or [email protected]. We encourage you to register as soon as possible as space is limited and filling up fast!

Has your ladies’ class ever considered a field trip? Why not come to Healing Hands for a Bible lesson, tour and delicious lunch? We have ladies available to plan a special outing for your group. It would be a great opportunity for a ladies’ day out and a chance to learn more about Healing Hands and how to get involved. We also have ladies on staff available to come and speak at your ladies’ day, retreat, or Bible class. We will prepare lessons on any Biblical or spiritual topic you request and will also incorporate stories about the ministry at HHI. We recently were invited to speak at the Lone Oak church of Christ in Paducah, KY and the Pulaski St. church of Christ in Lawrenceburg, TN. Both were wonderful days filled with fellowship, food and fun. For more information, call Lori Kovach in Nashville at (615) 832-2000 or Brenda Jones in Ft. Worth at (817) 536-3383.

“Another ear infection....another $25 co-pay. Great!” As a parent, it is tempting to think this way when our children get sick. But for hundreds of children in Haiti, basic health care like an antibiotic is simply unattainable. Many children die each day from something as simple as diarrhea. That is why Dr. Matt Tincher and his team of 25 doctors, nurses and dentists were so passionate about the opportunity to bring basic medical and dental care to more than 500 people, mostly orphans, in the Port au Prince region of Haiti. In April of this year, Matt’s team traveled to Haiti for the sole purpose of treating the children of seven special children’s homes. Most of these children had never received dental care before and basic medical care had been limited. Now, with the use of Healing Hands’ medical database program, Matt’s team will be able to track the care of these children through the years as they make return trips. The team has already scheduled a follow up trip for this October. One of the orphanages that the medical team visited sustained irreparable damage in the 2010 earthquake. There were a couple who served as caretakers in this orphanage, but the wife was killed in the quake leaving her husband behind by himself to care for the 66 children living there. Because of the damage done to the home, the children have been living in constant danger. All of the children were sleeping in one small room with several to a bed. While the medical team was examining them, Dr. Tincher determined that one girl had a very bad case of Tuberculosis. They had the di"cult job of trying to explain to her that she could no longer sleep in the room with her “brothers and sisters.” The good news is that Healing Hands has partnered with a team from Franklin, TN to build them a new home. While the team was there building the home, they also spent many hours playing games with the kids and holding a VBS to teach them about the love of Christ. At the end of the trip, one of the translators delivered a note to our director of Haiti Operations, Harry Hames. The note read, “Good Morning. My name is Steven Dorrie. I’m an orphan child, you know how hard this is being parentless? Please could you take me with you? Cause

it’s so much su!ering and pain for me in Haiti. I’m asking please take me with you.” Because of your support, children like Steven are now able to live in a safe home, have basic medical care and clean water to drink. Please continue to help us reach out to precious souls like Steven and remember this ministry in prayer. To stay updated on the work in Haiti, visit our website at www.hhi.org/Haiti.

! As parents, it is exciting to see our children learn new things about God’s creation. Aleta Mariano had that opportunity in May when Healing Hands staff and volunteers came to her home in Kayenta, AZ to teach the life saving skills of survival gardening and food preservation. Aleta and her four children were just one of several families who came to the Kayenta church of Christ property each day to learn how to feed their families a healthy diet on very little income. More than half of the families in the Navajo Nation live below poverty level. The workshop was a great opportunity for the children to learn responsibility and how to work together. Everyone who attends is given the opportunity to participate in a very “hands-on” learning environment. In this way, they will better remember the skills they have learned and are easily able to duplicate them in the future. Navajo families learned to use resources that would normally be wasted. Daily trips were made to the local dump to collect waste that could be used for composting at no cost. It was so exciting to see entire families, several generations, learning and sharing together.

A Global Crisis As food prices around the world continue to rise, we are facing a global disaster greater than any tornado, earthquake or flood. In fact, 925 million people are currently suffering from hunger and malnutrition. In the United States, food prices are 36% higher now than last year and the average American is spending close to 10% of his income for food. However, we must remember that our brothers and sisters in Kenya will spend 45% of their income for food this year. The good news is that this is a crisis that can and is being solved by teaching hard working families how to feed themselves using basic resources that we throw away everyday.

Will you join us by empowering one family of seven to feed themselves for $50? Or, for $4 a month you can sponsor one family each year! No commitment is too small. Visit www.hhi.org/food to find more ways to empower families around the world.

raised when Madison’s mom published the story on her popular blog site: www.smockityfrocks.com. Jon, Shannon, Madison and their friends believe that “everyone deserves clean water.” Do you agree? Now, it is easier than ever to join them in bringing clean water to the world. When the new Healing Hands website launches on November 1st, you can go to www.hhi.org and create your own fundraising page. You can set a goal to raise $4,800, enough for an entire village well, or you can set a goal for any amount you choose. Then you can simply

invite your friends and family to join you by donating toward your goal. Imagine the impact that you could make if each of your friends and family gave just $5 toward your goal. For more information about bringing clean water to the world, visit www.hhi.org or call Joseph Smith at (615) 832-2000.

A Penny For Your Thoughts? The phrase “a penny for your thoughts” is traced back as far as the 1500s, when it appeared in John Heywood’s 1546 collection of proverbs. In 1961, Dick York starred as Hector Poole in an episode of the “Twilight Zone” entitled, “A Penny for Your Thoughts.” What does that have to do with Healing Hands International? Stay with me for a moment. What if we alter the phrase and substitute the word “searches” for the word “thoughts?” Then we could make a direct connection to both Healing Hands and to you. Why? Because of an internet search engine named GoodSearch. An explanation in GoodSearch’s own words: Search engines make most of their money from companies that pay an advertising fee when users click on links during a search. At GoodSearch, we've patented a way to track and direct these search-generated proceeds to charities. In other words, a portion of advertiser dollars (and not your own!) earned as a result of your search, are

now passed along to the organization you've chosen to support. Here is a unique way in a tough economy to support charitable causes without adding additional strain to your budget. Consider this: each time you use GoodSearch to do a qualified search on the internet, approximately one penny is donated to the charity of your choice…”a penny for your search.” If you did two searches per day, that would mean two cents per day to Healing Hands International, or to quote another phrase that goes back at least to the 1920s, “your two cents worth”…and we would love to have it every day. Two cents may sound like an insignificant amount, but when a large number of God-loving people pool their efforts, the results could be staggering. So how does it happen? It begins with you and me, and then we encourage our family, friends and fellow church members to participate, and then they do the same. If

this effort grows to involve 25,000 people doing two searches per day, it would result in $500.00 per day, $15,000.00 per month or $180,000.00 per year contributed to do the will of God. That can make a huge difference in the outreach of HHI, and will allow people all over the world to be fed physically and spiritually. Will you join me? First, start by e-mailing me ([email protected]) to let me know that you will participate and would like to receive an e-mail at the end of each month to let you know how we are doing. Second, go to the www.goodsearch.com page and follow the instructions to begin your journey. You will enable HHI to provide humanitarian relief and share the gospel simultaneously. Finally, encourage everyone you know to join you in this journey. I promise you that from now on, whenever you hear “A Penny for your Thoughts,” good things will come to mind!

-Scott Saunders

The Meadowbrook church of Christ in Jackson, MS is an amazing example of what can be accomplished when a passionate group of people decide to make an impact. The entire congregation, led by Cindi Latson and Tammy Gandy, set a goal to raise at least $24,000 for water wells. The whole church joined the effort. The children learned about the need for clean water in their Bible classes and constructed small “water wells” in which to collect their change. The teens sold bracelets as a reminder of the need for clean water, and there was a special collection Sunday. When this special Sunday came around, each of the children filed down the aisle to the front of the auditorium where a large well had been sitting for months as a constant reminder. After proudly depositing the money they had raised, they lined the front of the room and sang “Give Me

Water From The Well” as the plates were passed. This 500 member congregation ended up giving $40,000 to drill eight water wells around the world! The well pictured below is one of the wells in India sponsored by this church. Their funds will also provide wells in Ethiopia, Haiti and Zambia. The ladies said this about the project, “We prayed for an awareness of what the needs were. We prayed for tender hearts and

open ears. We prayed for God’s Spirit to move mightily in His body. And we prayed that in all things God’s name alone would be glorified.”

This well in India is one of the eight wells funded by the Meadowbrook church of Christ in Jackson, MS.

“Since the tsunami I have felt so bitter, but today as I was planting vegetables I felt such joy! It's like a chain was broken. I was saved in some divine way but I don't know why. After you came, I kept tearing up and I felt like I could survive." This statement was made by a gentleman whose home was destroyed in the tsunami that swept Japan just a few short months ago. After a chance meeting with Chad Huddleston and a team

Giving Without End During their lifetime, a dedicated Christian family may give as much as ten to fifteen percent of their income each year to their church and charities they love.Often, they may give nothing when they depart from this earth. Today more families are finding a way to continue and in some cases even expand what they give through thoughtful gift planning.!!!!!!!!!!! Mary is a great example of this fact.! During her lifetime, Susan gave a little more than $10,000 to her favorite charity.! Because she had saved and planned well for her retirement, and because she carefully planned for what would happen after this life, Susan was able to give more than $100,000 to the same charity after her death.!!!!!!!!!!! John has had adequate income in the past but recent low CD interest rates have reduced his income; he wanted to find a way to increase his income, provide for his charity’s programs, and reduce tax consequences.! Through a vehicle called a charitable gift annuity, John was able to provide increased income for himself and his wife, while bringing huge blessings to his charity after his passing.!!!!!!!!!!! These are just two examples of the many ways that individuals who have supported good works during their lifetime are able to continue their giving after they’re gone…”giving without end.” In many cases, they enjoy benefits of increased income and tax reductions during life, as well.!!!!!!!!!!! Healing Hands International is pleased to tell you that Scott Saunders, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional, has joined our staff. !Scott is a caring, compassionate servant who has enabled many to enjoy the fruits of their hard work while expanding the scope of their gifts for the work of God beyond their lifetime. !If he can be of assistance to you in planning your gift, please contact him at (615) 832-2000 or [email protected].

Raphael Mthombeni came to the U.S. in 2002 from his home in Zimbabwe. Raphael is the president of a sister organization called Great Grace Camp Ministries that raises funds to help the people of his home land. Raphael attended the food sustainability workshops at the HHI Nashville offices in April of this year. But, as a resident of Cleburne, TX, he volunteers at the HHI offices in Ft. Worth. Since he had just taken the course in raised bed gardening, he was very instrumental in establishing the Ft. Worth garden this summer. Raphael and his wife dream of returning to Zimbabwe to use the gardening methods they have learned to help their people learn to feed themselves. If you would like to take a tour of the new facilities in Ft. Worth, contact Brenda at (817) 536-3383 or [email protected].

We know that you lovingly pack each Magi gift box with one sweet child in mind. Unfortunately, you never get to see the bright smile it puts on the face of that sweet child...until now. In 2010, a professional film crew donated their time to travel to Honduras to capture the journey of one special Magi box. Now you can see Carla, a young girl in a remote village called Namasigue, receive her first Christmas gift. Have a tissue box ready and visit www.hhi.org/magi to see the video. Then, we encourage you to set a goal of how many children you want to bless this year and start packing. Last year, we received requests totaling 19,000 boxes and were able to send about 14,000. This means that there are still several thousand children waiting to receive their first gift. Christmas is right around the corner and these children are waiting to receive your gift of love. For questions about the Magi project, contact Cindy at (615) 832-2000.

of Christians who were traveling through to deliver relief supplies, the man called them back and told them of how their relief and encouragement had changed his life when he thought there was no hope left. This is just one of the countless stories that we hear everyday from the team of Christian relief workers we have partnered with to show the love of Christ to the people of Japan. The team has found unique ways, like neighborhood barbecues, to help the victims of disaster while also building relationships that will allow the gospel to be shared. In June HHI board member Burt Nowers, his son Ryan, and HHI staff member Jim Pounders, had the opportunity to travel to Japan and work with this amazing team. While there, they helped clean out two facilities that have been purchased to serve as headquarters for the relief work that continues to be done there. Last month, HHI sponsored a team from the Cordova church of Christ to travel to Tohoku to complete the repair of this facility. Now the Christian relief workers will have a place to sleep, organize efforts and worship.
