Headmaster Biennial Concert Thank you to all members of our community who contributed to a magnificent Biennial Concert on Tuesday night. Our Director of Music, Mr Ben Bishop, and our talented Music Staff were able to achieve extraordinary results with our students, and the audience was treated with a magical evening on so many levels. From the gorgeous tango played by our Junior School Orchestra to the rousing strains of the 1812 Overture (complete with cannons!), the standard of performance was simply stunning. It is difficult to identify highlights, but Nathan Fong’s magnificent playing of the Bruch Violin concerto was surely one, as was the exquisite singing of the Chorale. The ‘Theme Team’ added a new and entertaining element to the evening, as did the reprise performance of highlights from this year’s musical, City of Angels. The massed singing, though, was the real highlight of the night, with a choir of over 1,000 male voices singing songs which ranged from the standard, ‘New York, New York’ to Miss Saigon’s ‘Bui Doi’, and of course the unofficial school song, ‘The Anthem from Chess’. I felt very proud to be a part of the Camberwell Community on Tuesday evening – our boys were simply superb. Thank you and well done to all. Generations Photo We would like to take a Generations Photo of all current boys with relatives (Grandfather, Father, Uncle, Brother) who are an Old Boy of Camberwell Grammar School on Friday 2 September 2016 at 8.30am. The photo will be taken on the foyer steps of the Performing Arts Centre, after the Junior School Father’s Day Breakfast. The photo will feature in the next edition of Spectemur. If you would like to participate in this photo, please ensure current students and their Old Boy relatives are in the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre by 8.20am. Poem in My Pocket During Term 3, the Junior School have participated in a program called ‘Poem in My Pocket’ whereby the boys take a poem known to them, or not, and learn to recite it unaided to an audience. At today’s Whole School Assembly Roy Legge (Year 1) and Christopher Khong (Year 3) each flawlessly recited poems which they had written themselves. The students were most impressive and the audience was very appreciative. Deputy HeadSchool PhotographsThe last round of School Photographs will be taken on Friday 2 September. These will include Junior School Music and Sport photos, and Middle and Senior School Spring Sport photos. These photos will be available to purchase online from the Hikari Photography website early next term. The Senior School House photographs, including individual portraits, will also be taken on this day. You should expect to receive your son’s House and Portrait photo package in Term 4. The photograph schedule has been posted on noticeboards around the School and Schoology, and has also been communicated through the Daily Notices. Students should consult these places to ensure they are aware of the timing of their photographs for the day.Any student who does not meet the school standard with regard to uniform, including hair, will not be included in photos on this day. Please refer to your son’s School diary, page 18, for more information about the expected standard of dress and appearance.

Business ManagerTraffic Movement ReminderTraffic congestion in and around the school seems to have worsened recently. It has been noticed that drop-offs and pick-ups are taking longer and passing traffic is also being affected adversely. The school regularly receives complaint calls from local pedestrians and fellow road-users.Charlie, our peak period traffic monitor, is a team of one. So for the next few weeks I have asked some of my team to provide occasional support to Charlie – to see what we can do to improve traffic flow. Of particular focus will be:• Monitoring the ‘no right turn’ rule from Gate 2 – please turn left to keep traffic flowing• Preventing use of Gate 5 for drop-off or pick-up – there is no natural flow-through here• Discouraging double-parking in the street – inconveniencing other road users• Allowing your son to alight from the right hand side of the car on the road – very dangerous• Stopping across neighbours driveways • Stopping in no-standing zones• Adherence to the drop zone time limits – keeping time to a minimum in the ‘drop and go’ zonesTo help reduce this congestion, you might consider these options:• Public transport (particularly for Middle School and Senior School students) - tram and train options are

a short walk away• Dropping your son a few blocks away – letting him walk a few hundred meters• Encouraging your son to walk to school or ride his bike – particularly as Spring approachesOur Sports Centre development is very nearly complete. We can all look forward to much better traffic conditions once the drop-off area in Chatfield Avenue comes on stream in 2017.The safety of your children will always be our utmost priority. Please follow the instructions of the traffic monitors at all times, and keep an eye out for pedestrians – particularly our young ones!

School Health Services CoordinatorFood Allergies From time to time, I am asked if we are a ‘nut free’ school. We do not claim to be ‘nut free’ however, we are most definitely ‘nut aware’. The Cafeteria does not use nuts or nut products in their preparation of food, however food that is prepared off-site may be subject to cross contamination, especially if prepared in an external bakery. For the safety of our students with food allergies, it would be wise if the food labels are checked before consumption. The Cafeteria is happy to assist both students and parents with any enquiries regarding food labelling. If you would like any information regarding how we handle food allergy here at school, or any other questions regarding allergies and anaphylaxis, please contact Mrs Rhonda Nicholson, School Health Services Coordinator, on 9835 1777 or email [email protected].

Middle SchoolThe days are longer and the sun has more than a hint of warmth to it. This is a great time of year and as we head towards the final weeks of Term 3 the Middle School boys have been involved in a wonderful range of activities. With another successful tournament in full swing, I am certain that the five-a-side street soccer competition will become a permanent feature of Term 3 in Middle School. We have the semi-finals next week and it will all culminate in the grand final play off on the last day of term.

Biennial ConcertWhat a brilliant night it was as the School came together at Hamer Hall on Tuesday night for what was a wonderful evening of music. I was exceptionally proud of the Middle School boys, who played a major role in setting the standard with the Middle School Orchestra and Concert Band opening the night. Leon Fei (Year 6) also played an exquisite solo as part of the Junior School Orchestra. I thoroughly enjoyed the up tempo ‘Mack the Knife’ by the Middle School Stage Band and it was great to see many of our boys combining with their Senior School counterparts in the Shool Choir, Chorale and CGS Strings. The massed singing was also spectacular and I know that the Middle School boys thoroughly enjoyed being part of this. The boys handled themselves with aplomb throughout the rehearsals and on the night. All in all it was a wonderful occasion.

DebatingOur boys continued the great form from the previous week with several teams posting memorable wins. Next week sees the culmination of the competition as the teams grapple with the topic that parents should have access to their children’s social media accounts.

House Cross Country ResultsLast week we were able to announce the top five across the line from each year level in the House Cross Country. This week I am able to announce the final placings in the closely contested event:

Open Day Camberwell Grammar School Open Day is being held on Saturday 8 October from 10.00am until 2.00pm. On Open Day we will be offering performances, hands-on activities and displays in classrooms for students and visitors to our School. The Art Studio will also showcase students’ work. The animal farm returns for all the little ones and animal lovers. All boys, Prep to Year 5, are expected to attend for at least the duration of the activities in which they are participating. Any boys who have conflicting engagements are asked to notify Mr Kelly in writing by the start of Term 4.

Junior School MusicCongratulations to all members of the Junior School Orchestra and Junior School Concert Choir who performed with musical skill and confidence at the Biennial School Concert at Hamer Hall. The Junior School Orchestra’s performance of Oblivion was sensitively played, with strong rhythmic interest enhancing the beautiful solo violin of Leon Fei, Year 6. In contrast, all the boys from Junior School enjoyed presenting the humorous song I Don’t Need Anything But You from the musical ‘Annie’ followed by the lyrical evergreen What A Wonderful World. Our Junior School musicians were warmly applauded as they enjoyed their first performance to such a vast audience. Poco di MusicaThursday 8 September, 6.00pm to 7.15pm, Performing Arts CentreTo complete our Term 3 concert season, several choral and instrumental ensembles from Junior School and Middle School will present a short evening concert. The performance groups will be: Combined Flute Ensemble, Junior School Choir, Year 2 and 3 Superstars, Junior School Percussion Ensemble, Junior School Recorder Ensemble, Angliss Strings, Middle School Percussion Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble. This lovely evening concert will bring a busy musical term to a close and tickets can be booked through Trybooking for $10.00 each here: www.trybooking.com/MVMR.

SportAll of our Water Polo teams continue to do well with the Senior and Junior Teams leading their respective competitions with two rounds to go. Athletics is also making their way to the finals with one week of trials to go. Next Friday is their final selection and pizza night leading into the AGSV finals in the last week of term.

All Summer Sport team lists have been placed on the Sports Office windows. Please see Mr Jamie Watson if you are unsure of anything relating to Summer Sport. Also see Mr Watson if you are interested in Firsts trials which are currently on, or are about to commence, for Summer Sports.

Sport ReportEight AGSV schools gathered at Doncaster in cold conditions for Round 3 of the Athletics trials. Despite the conditions and carrying heavy legs after the House Cross Country, it was pleasing to see many athletes post season best performances, notably in the distance events. At Under 15, Taran Laurence (Year 8) ran a seven second PB over 800m whilst Ryan Fitzgerald, Tom Graves and Henry Macdonald (all Year 9) ran well together in the 1500m. Ryan and Tom took nearly ten seconds off their previous personal bests. At Under 16, newcomers added depth to an already competitive age group. Ali Fitzgerald (Year 10) made a welcome return to the squad, showing good form in both his 100m and long jump. Run of the day came from Nicholas Liew (Year 10), whose 4:48 debut effort in the 1500m bodes well for the finals. Finally, at Under 17 and Open age groups, Luke Ireland (Year 11) ran a brave solo effort to post a personal best in the 3000m. Adrian Xu (Year 11) returned to competition in the 800m and Pierre Bougeois (Year 12) ran well in both his 800m and 400m with the fastest 400m time of the day. Ben Chaffey (Year 12) cleared 1.75m, leading the way in the high jump and Harrison Lucas (Year 12) continued his outstanding run of form with a 4:17 effort over 1500m stamping his authority in that event. With two more trials on offer before the finals, it will be critical for all those aiming to earn a place in the squad to compete at Mentone this weekend and then at the final CGS trials on Friday 2 September. The Open Water Polo team faced a stern test last weekend against Trinity. A very tight first quarter saw Camberwell with a one goal lead and knowing that this was not going to be an easy game. The ball went up and down the pool in the second quarter with many promising attacks into the forward area, but was

defended well by both sides. After half time, Trinity decided to bring their best player out from goals and into the action in the centre of the pool. Camberwell fought hard to edge away and went from strength to strength in the final quarter to record an 11 goals to 5 win. The team now sits undefeated on top of the ladder and with the last two games remaining, could seal the premiership this week if all players stick to the game plan and play with discipline. Chris Kerdemelidis (Year 11) played an excellent game once again, ably supported by Aaron Campbell (Year 11) in attack, with great defence from Projit Banerjee and Will Exon (both Year 11).

MusicHamer Hall Biennial ConcertIt is such a joy and privilege to come to work with the musicians of Camberwell Grammar every day, and an honour to steer this ship. We triumphed at Hamer Hall this week, in every way possible, the boys were superb and everyone worked together to make the concert a huge success. The boys at CGS love their music, not only because of a big concert, but because of every class, every lesson, every rehearsal that happens every day. I write this still totally overwhelmed by the boys’ amazing performances, their hearty reaction at the end of the night, and the beautiful messages that have graced my screen and office since the performance. Thank you, so much, to everyone for your support. Words cannot express how proud I am of our fabulous boys this week. The Biennial Concert can only come about with a huge whole school effort, and it is a celebration of our community when we all come together in this way every two years. The boys make it spectacular, and they can only do this with full support on all sides – from the musical, academic and administrative teams within the school as well as continued support from family and friends at home. It was a joy, an honour, and really quite surreal to stand in the center of it all during the massed singing. My sincere thanks to you all – the concert was only possible because of every parent, student and staff member that put in so much effort to create our moment in CGS history at Hamer Hall.

Hamer Hall Biennial Concert DVDShould you wish to purchase a recording of the evening, please place your order through Trybooking here: www.trybooking.com/LPIJ

Elva Allan Memorial ConcertThursday 1 September, 7.30pm, Performing Arts Centre StageChamber Music is regarded by many musicians and composers to be the highest of music making, and our very finest musicians will be performing an exquisite program next Thursday to showcase their talents in this intimate setting. This concert allows each individual musician to work in small groups, and to create a unique blend of sound, tone and expression within their ensemble. Having heard some rehearsals over the past few weeks, I feel confident that our ears are in for a very special treat next Thursday. The concert is not ticketed and I encourage all lovers of fine music to attend.
