Headmaster Mother’s Day This morning I had the pleasure in joining our Junior School Staff and students to celebrate Mother’s Day with the mums from Prep to Year 5. The boys certainly enjoyed the opportunity of sharing bacon and eggs, a hot chocolate and pastries with their mum before school. They also sang beautifully about how much they loved their mums – if only they could always be this way! Thank you to our Friends of Norge for their wonderful organisation and hard work to set up such a special morning. I hope all mothers enjoy a very special day this coming Sunday! NAPLAN This week our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 have been sitting compulsory NAPLAN tests. They have done so in a very calm and methodical way and I compliment them on their matter of fact demeanour. We will look forward to the results later this year, remembering that these tests give only a snapshopt of performance on one day in limited areas – they are not the be all and end all. Examination/Assessment Period Within two weeks most of our students in Middle and Senior Schools will face semester assessments and examinations. I encourage all students to begin their revision early, familiarise themselves with the content of their tests and actively seek assistance if necessary. I wish them all the best as we approach this important time. Normal classes will be somewhat disrupted during this period, so please refer to the attached flyer to this Bulletin for a timetable of the coming examination/assessment period. Should your son require special provisions for his examinations or there are extenuating circumstances that would necessitate a variation to the timing of an examination, he should collect a form from the Student Records Office. Alternatively, these forms can be found on the Parent Portal. Premier’s VCE Awards 2016 The Premier’s VCE Awards are given annually to students who have performed at the highest level in Unit 3 and 4 subjects or who have achieved outstanding overall results in the Victorian Certificate of Education. Awards for last year’s VCE students were presented at a ceremony held on Thursday 27 April, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Congratulations to the following students from Camberwell Grammar School who received a Premier’s VCE Award for their 2016 studies: Oscar Lu (Year 11 2016) for Chinese Second Language (Advanced) Addison Peers-Johnson (Year 12 2016) for English Year 9 Camp – Parent Information Evening Last Wednesday, Mr Rhys Thomas, Acting Director of Co-curricular Activities held an Information Evening for Year 9 Parents, to hear about the arrangements and allocations for their son’s upcoming camps. Middle SchoolNAPLANOur Year 7 boys need to be congratulated for the calm and efficient manner with which they approached the NAPLAN tests this week. Everything ran very smoothly and I trust that it proved to be a valuable experience for the boys. Results will be posted to parents later in the year.

Alcohol Awareness PresentationAs part of our PSC studies, on Thursday we welcomed Mr Xavier Diaz from Warner Youth Education, who spoke to Year 8 boys about the power of peer group pressure and how to resist such potentially strong influences. Mr Diaz focused on underage drinking and the dangers associated with this. Themes from the presentation will be picked up in future PSC classes. Year 8 Form Teachers have also commenced the delivery of an Emotional Intelligence program, which we run in conjunction with Swinburne University. Topics to be studied include Tuning into Emotions, Expressing Emotions, Conflict Resolution, Mindfulness, Problem Solving, Emotion Regulation and Self-Care.

William Angliss DinnerWe have had a great response to this year’s Angliss dinner so I am very much looking forward to Tuesday night. Educational Neuroscientist Dr Jared Cooney Horvath promises to be an insightful and entertaining speaker, with a focus on brain development and learning. SportWhat a wonderful view looking out at the KAO, the sun shining and the football being kicked around for the first time in over two decades. A great start to Winter Sport for 2017, with several teams enjoying a wide variety of sports across a range of age groups.

Congratulations to Nicholas Lee on Orienteering Half Colours. Lastly, just a reminder to parents that all spectators at AGSV matches should model the highest standards of behaviour to their sons - there must be no negative cheering of umpires or opposition players.

Jamie Watson, Director of Sport

Sport ReportThe 2017 winter season began last weekend for the majority of CGS teams. Camberwell came out slowly against Ivanhoe in their First XI Hockey match, but goalkeeper Ben Niemandt (Year 12) was on fire keeping them in the game. Starting the second half 0-0, Camberwell ‘flicked the switch’ with the ball hitting the back of the net six times thanks to stand out efforts by Will Bolton and Nick Gooden (both Year 10). In the end, it was a great win.The First XVIII Football team had a tough first quarter against last year’s runners up in PEGS. Camberwell stepped up their intensity in each of the following quarters with more confident ball movement. David McColl (Year 11), Harry Veitch (Year 12) and Max Inglis (Year 10) starred, but the team ultimately fell short against the strong opposition. The Third XVIII team, however, came away with an incredible victory in their first match of the season as Anton Giomi (Year 11) dominated in the midfield, showing that anything is possible for the team this year. The First XI Soccer team played against Marcellin on Friday afternoon. The losing score line of 3-1, does not reflect the tremendous fight and grit shown by the promising young team. Just before the half time whistle, an immediate uptick of tempo saw Xander Simpson (Year 11) latch onto a pass by Nathan Martin (Year 11) and shoot for goal, hitting the post and bouncing out rather than in. The second half saw Nathan Martin, yet again assist a shot, only this time to debutant Jasper Guthrie (Year 10), who scored and put the score line at 2-1. Unfortunately Marcellin scored again late in the game leaving the result beyond doubt. It was fantastic to see growing numbers of students from Year 7 to 12 participating in Fencing, as the depth and talent of the team continues to develop. At the junior level, Anderson Sulewski (Year 9) showed immense improvement to make it to the final eight of his competition, whilst in seniors, Darcy MacCuspie (Year 11) overcame a back injury to progress all the way to the final four to be awarded this round’s ‘Play of the Week’.
