Headmaster House Music Competition Congratulations to all students who competed in our House Music Competition on Thursday night. In recent years it seems that the standard of the singing has improved dramatically and the competition has become much more even overall. It is certainly thrilling to see so many students presenting the results of their hard work and preparation so confidently. We are blessed with many talented students. The work of the arrangers and conductors and accompanists was particularly impressive last night, but so too was the way that all Houses, musicians or not came together as one and sang with passion and conviction. In some ways it is a pity that such extraordinary work needs to be ranked and judged, though I suspect that the element of competition plays no small part in motivating the students, and the difficulty of winning across the range of disciplines makes the trophy seem all the more alluring. Congratulations to Summons House for their victory on the night, but congratulations to all Houses on what they were able to achieve. Everyone was able to come a long way in a short space of time. House Music demonstrates more clearly than almost anything else just how much students can achieve with focus, purpose and hard work. That the students themselves were responsible for every aspect of the evening is another reason for us to have faith in the future. Many thanks to all House and Music staff for the support that they have given to the students throughout the preparation period and to Mr Henley for his guidance of the whole thing. Thanks too to our adjudicator, Mr Trevor Jones, who managed his unenviable task most professionally. School Photographs The next round of School Photographs will be taken on Tuesday 28 July. Students involved in Music, Winter Sports, Cadets and Debating groups will be required on the day. In addition, all students in the Middle School and Senior School will have their Winter Sport team photo taken. With the exception of students in a First Sporting Team or those in Taekwondo, students will be photographed in their Full School uniform. All boys should present in a clean shirt, pants, school tie, blazer, dark socks and polished leather lace up shoes, and with a suitable haircut. Students in a First Sporting Team are required to wear their sports uniform. Students who participate in Taekwondo will have their photograph taken in their Dobak. The photograph schedule has been posted on noticeboards around the school and also communicated through the Daily Notices. Students should consult these places to ensure they are aware of the timing of their photographs for the day. Please note that the final round of school photographs is scheduled for Friday 4 September. These will include Junior School Music and Sport, Middle and Senior School Spring Sport and Senior School House Photographs. Agendo 2015 - Opening Night As mentioned last week, we are extremely pleased to once again host and convene this year’s Agendo Art Competition for emerging artists. I warmly invite you to come, support and encourage our finalists by joining us at the Opening Night on Wednesday 5 August at St Heliers’ Gallery at the Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers Street, Abbotsford beginning at 6.30pm. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle SchoolProjec10I must congratulate all of the boys (around 100 Year 8 students) for their great work raising money for Projec10. I trust that this is a valuable experience for them as they work in teams to raise money for this very worthwhile cause. This week we have had a flurry of activity in Middle School, with several lunchtime stalls in operation. On Tuesday morning students from PLC and Fintona visited us again so that each group could refine their planning. Next week several of our boys will venture to Camberwell Girls’ Grammar to meet with their teams. The project has provided a wonderful opportunity for our boys to connect with students from the three girls’ schools, as well as invaluable experience in organising and conducting fundraising events. It certainly appears that we have several budding entrepreneurs in our midst!

DebatingWell done to the many Year 7 and 8 boys who have elected to participate in the upcoming Inter-School Debating competition. Run by the Debating Association of Victoria, this competition provides participants with valuable debating experience, as well as guidance and instruction from university level debaters. The debating season is being run here at Camberwell Grammar in the William Angliss Building, so our boys will enjoy a home ground advantage. The debates will run on Monday nights over four weeks, commencing on Monday 10 August. The boys will need to be here at 6.00pm on those nights. Parents and supporters are most welcome to attend the debates. We wish all of our teams well.

Australian History CompetitionLate last term several Year 8 boys took up the challenge to compete in a History competition run by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia. The participants were challenged with a series of multiple choice questions based on both general knowledge and use of evidence. We are waiting for further results, but I can confirm that Steven Huang (Year 8) came first in Victoria, which is an outstanding result.

Rob French, Head of Middle School

Junior SchoolChinese VisitorsThe Junior School was host to some young Chinese visitors last week who were in Australia for the Global Village Speaking Competition. Much to the surprise of our boys, all but one of the visitors were girls. Our boys were very courteous and helpful enjoying the chance to demonstrate what school is like in Australia and in particular Camberwell Grammar School. Language differences were not a problem, particularly in the playground as all children happily played games and had fun. The group particularly enjoyed the ‘Ship Playground’ and it was delightful to see visitors and Camberwell Grammar students climbing, sliding, exploring and laughing together. The classroom was a little more serious giving the visitors a glimpse of a normal school day including attending specialist classes. It was clearly a different but interesting experience for everyone concerned.

Diane Collins, Deputy Head of Junior School

In Sickness and Health – Prevention is Better than CureThis is the time of the year when boys (and teachers) fall victim to winter germs. Parent support is greatly appreciated to help us prevent the spread of coughs and colds by encouraging healthy habits including covering up when coughing or sneezing, using tissues and washing hands regularly, especially after a visit to the toilets. If any child has been suffering from an infectious disease, the Health Department regulations must be observed and the School notified. Boys suffering from infectious cold symptoms should also be kept at home. Please ensure that your son does not return to school prematurely after an illness. This will ensure that he does not pass on his infection to the others boys and adults, and it will also enable him to fully participate in all school activities. If he is not able to participate in a Physical Education lesson a written note is required.

Junior School Cross CountryA reminder that next Wednesday 29 July all boys in Years 3, 4 and 5 will participate in the Junior School House Cross Country at Camberwell Grammar Junior School (Anniversary Bike Track below Norge) from 2.00pm to 3.00pm.Year 5: Assemble 2.15pm – Race begins at 2.30pmYears 3 and 4: Assemble 2.30pm – Race begins at 2.40pmAll boys Years 3 to 5 are reminded to wear correct House sport uniform to school. Tracksuit pants are not to be worn during the event. Asthma medication if necessary.

Howard Kelly, Head of Junior School

Sport ReoprtOver the last weekend of the holidays, members of the Snowsports team made the trip to Falls Creek for the second annual Camberwell Cup. Despite cold and miserable weather, the boys managed to enjoy a day and a half of race training with professional coaches, which they all found beneficial. After the coaching, the Camberwell Cup took place, with Captain, Matthew Waters, the fastest athlete, awarded the Cup for 2015. Sam Cullin took out the fastest snowboarder, with James Melville and Simon Bilston the most consistent in skiing and snowboarding, respectively. The students with the most improved times over the two runs were Ming Kim Low in skiing and Tim Allan in snowboarding. The Camberwell Cup follows on from the Falls Creek Family Week, which makes this event family friendly, with many siblings and parents also taking part in the race. Well done to all the boys on their efforts. Despite the poor weather conditions, the weekend turned out to be an outstanding success yet again, and some promising signs as we approach the Interschools next month.Having been defeated by Trinity earlier in the season, the 7/8B Football team were keen to measure their improvement as they faced them once again. Struggling to reach their maximum tempo, Camberwell were down by 7 points at quarter time. Keeping in mind the importance of maintaining structure, Camberwell dominated the second quarter, kicking four unanswered goals to take control of the match. Eventually Camberwell won, 31-21, with every player making valuable contributions. The First XVIII were refreshed after a light week on the training track. Playing PEGS at Gordon Barnard Oval, Camberwell started well, keeping up with the hot pace of the game. Lachie Powell continued his stellar season, playing as the rock in defence. Half time saw both teams level; however, Camberwell flailed, conceding 10 goals in the second half. The mighty Bears Futsal team rose to the occasion, playing against the Camberwell Gold side. Max Harper, ever clinical in front of goal was brilliant, with Max Han an able assistant in the 8-4 win.The First Soccer team played Trinity in the first of their finals fixtures to place the bottom half of the ladder. Camberwell started brightly, absorbing pressure and counterattacking with great punch. The breakthrough came from Pierre Bougeois who made a scintillating run through the midfield, into the penalty area and earning a penalty. Taking the kick himself and scoring, Camberwell were up 1-0. Trinity fought back in the closing stages of the game, equalising from a corner. Unfortunately, the depleted bench saw Camberwell fatigue, Trinity overrunning Camberwell as they scored the winning goal, to finish ahead, 2-1 in a valiant effort. The Inter C Gold Soccer team had a resounding win over Peninsula 11-0. The team moved the ball dynamically in their strongest performance of the year. Going into half time 4-0 up, Camberwell were relentless, David Augustes and Mitchell Coffey had a field day in front of goals. The First XI Hockey team played Trinity for the chance to meet Yarra Valley in the final. Camberwell took an early lead thanks to constant pressure from Hugh Emmett who found his brother Patrick on the post. The high intensity game saw the teams match each other, goal for goal. Trinity broke the trend, going 3-2 up, with Camberwell needing to win the match to go through to the final. Matthew Appleby levelled the scores with 5 minutes remaining. Unfortunately Trinity held Camberwell off, the game ending 3-3.

MusicChoir RobesThe FoPA Committee and myself are asking for some assistance with the washing and ironing of the red and white Choir Robes. There are about 120 that need ‘freshening up’ ready for the End of Year Services. If you are able to help please call into the Music School, Highton, and collect as many as you are able to handle - they wash and dry very quickly. We would be very grateful for any help that is possible.

LibraryBlokes’ Book BreakfastThis year we are delighted to have Mr Phillip Gwynne join us as our guest speaker at our annual Blokes’ Book Breakfast. In former times Mr Gwynne has worked as a marine biologist, a teacher and a computer programmer and also been an AFL footballer but he is best known to us as a writer. In 1998 he had enormous success with Deadly Unna? which won the Children’s Book of the Year and was subsequently made into the film, Aussie Rules. He has since gone on to write a number of books for children and young adults and a detective thriller for adults. At present his high drama thriller series, The Debt, has a big following of devoted fans at Camberwell Grammar.Mr Gwynne is passionate about boys reading and a recurring theme in his novels is the relationship between boys and their fathers or grandfathers. This comes to the fore in his novel Swerve, which was short-listed for many awards and is the story of a road trip across Australia taken by a boy and his newly-found grandfather and their many adventures on the way.We hope that you will be able to join us for what promises to be a very entertaining and interesting morning on Monday 24 August in the Weickhardt Library. A flyer with further details is attached at the end of the Bulletin.

Blokes’ Book Breakfast

Please join us for our annual Blokes’ Book Breakfast. This year our guest speaker, Mr Phillip Gwynne, will talk to us about his experiences growing up and becoming, not only an avid reader, but a highly acclaimed author. We will hear more about the ideas behind the books he has written, what it was like to have one of them made into a film and why he thinks it is so important for boys to read. This is a wonderful opportunity for Middle and Senior School boys and their fathers, grandfathers or uncles to spend time together sharing their interest in books and reading. A nutritious, cooked breakfast will be served at 7.00am, followed by Phillip’s talk at 7.30am. If you would like to join us please complete and return the slip below to the Weickhardt Library or email it to [email protected] before Wednesday 19 August.

Diploma courses at Monash The Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) offers an alternative entry pathway to Monash for students without the requirements for direct entry into a Monash bachelor degree. DoTS is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree, and those who successfully complete it can transition directly into second year of destination Monash degrees in either Business, Education or Nursing. To apply for DoTS, students need to have completed Year 12 with a minimum ATAR of 50, met the relevant English prerequisite and completed a supplementary form. Students interested in studying science, mathematics or related areas, might like to consider the Diploma of Higher Education (DoHE), currently offered at the Clayton campus, which provides an alternative entry pathway into a relevant undergraduate course. Like the DoTS, this program also allows students to begin studying towards their Monash degree from day one. Students will be introduced to a broad range of science fields and complete a sequence of study in two of the following: Biological Science, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics or Physics. This will allow students to gain a foundation in key scientific principles while determining their future area of study. Further details about both the DoTS and DoHE can be found on at DoTS and DoHE

Camberwell Grammar School/Camberwell Girls Grammar School Parent Education

The Growth Mindset as a Pathway to Learning For parents of students in all years Why is it that so many of the most promising sportsmen and women at school fail to realise their potential once they leave school? What makes some children cheat in tests? Why can some children cope with making mistakes in their work, while others fall to pieces?

Professor Carol Dweck of Stanford University has electrified the world of education with her ground-breaking work on the Growth Mindset.

Put simply, most students - and adults -tend to have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. A fixed mindset person views their intelligence as set, while a growth mindset person views their intelligence as able to be changed. This simple viewpoint on life can have dramatic impact on how students feel about school, deal with setbacks and work to achieve their best.

The Heads of both Camberwell Grammar School and Camberwell Girls Grammar, Dr Paul Hicks and Ms Debbie Dunwoody, are pleased to jointly present this important concept to parents of both schools. They will explain the concept, how parents and teachers can shape a child’s mindset, and the ongoing effect the mindset has on many aspects of a child’s time at school, and afterwards.

Parents are encouraged to come to this important seminar in our Parent Education series.

CGS Hockey - Bonded Polar fleece full zip jacket. In an effort to find a warm alternative for those winter mornings waiting for the game to start or while the boys are on the bench, Friends of Hockey have organised for polar fleeces to be made up with the School emblem. We have sizes small to large in stock, the XL and 2XL have already sold out and we will be taking orders for larger sizes for our next production run.

The Polar Fleece is the heaviest fabric we have been able to source (350gsm), it will provide a lot of warmth and it should also offer a degree of wind protection. They will be available for $40.00 each which is below cost as Friends of Hockey are paying for the embroidery and the set-up. The sizing is shown in the table below however from the samples we have received so far the size is not overly generous. The chest measurement is directly under the arms and is the exact size of the jacket it is therefore worth taking into account that the boys will be wearing tops underneath. The length is from the top of the collar to the bottom of the jacket. Trying one of the samples to check sleeve length and body fit is the best way of determining the size required. The Polar Fleeces will be at the Development Office. Additional information call or email Louise Brown 0409 176 223
