No and low growth acceleratesDemand will continue to rise for craft lager and
no/low alcohol products. There is a new gap in the market for “lower” ABV drinks and this area will
continue to expand.
Craft rangeIPAs and Pale Ales have been rising in popularity for
some time and make up 60% of the craft beer market. Traditional styles such as brown ale have seen sales fall but should also be included in your craft beer range.
Savvy consumers are drinking less alcohol less often, but drinking
better; increasingly choosing quality local craft over mainstream beers.
Younger drinkers are drinking less but drinking better quality
beer. The most significant change between the 2017 and 2019
surveys was in the number of 25 to 34-year-olds drinking beer more regularly than once a week from
26% in 2017 to 16% in 2019.

Consumers and retailers will increasingly need assurances on quality through schemes like the
SIBA Brewers Food Safety & Quality Standard.
Quality assurance
Canned Beer dominates. Breweries that switched from bottles to cans found on average
that their rate of sale almost tripled.**
Canned beer
Consumers will increasingly choose beers from breweries they share ethical values with.
Ethical values
***
Consumers believe genuine craft beer should come from a small
independent brewery.
British Independent Brewers brewed 0.8% more beer in 2018,
compared to 2017.
890 jobs are expected to be created by small independent
brewers in 2019.

A soft, easy-drinking Malbec from the South of France, made in a modern style. Upfront fruit of blackcurrants and plums well-balanced in the mouth with good acidity.
A discreet bouquet, fine and pleasant with aromas of acacia and hawthorn flowers. Elegant on the palate, this lively wine displays good balance between acidity and structure.
Its style is more New World with crisp, tropical fruits than is expected from this part of France. Fresh white flowers and grapefruit on the nose which is reflected on the clean palate with a citrus burst on the finish.
Crisp and fruity Viognier. Lemon aromas with peach and apricot and a rich and refreshing finish.

AUG
26August Bank HolidaySummer is here and August is host to the last of the 2019 bank holidays before Christmas. With customers eager to enjoy the summer sun with friends and family, the bank holiday weekend offers a fantastic opportunity to boost sales and increase footfall at your venue.• Make your venue inviting with hanging baskets to brighten things
up, attract passing trade and set a cheerful welcoming tone.• Promote all of your events well in advance using posters, A boards,
banners and social media.• Special offers on pitchers of cold cider, lager and cocktails are a
great way to increase sales.• Offer soft drinks and mocktails for children and non-drinkers. • Families are key to a successful bank holiday weekend. Concentrate
on family dining with attractive special offers. Free kids meals are sure to go down well, just remember to protect your margins!
• Host a family fun day to draw in the crowds – offer outdoor games, activities and music as well as a children’s entertainer, face painter or bouncy castle and you’re on to a winner.
• Live music is a great way to attract customers to your venue over the bank holiday weekend. Get local bands involved and use their social media as well as your own to spread the word.
• Make your outdoor areas the place to be ahead of the bank holiday weekend – comfortable furniture, parasols, patio heaters and clean, litter free areas will help attract customers to your venue and keep them there for longer.
• BBQs are a guaranteed and versatile winner for the summer months. They increase food sales, drive up drinks sales and attract larger groups of customers. Focus on hand-held foods such as hot dogs, chicken and burgers for a broad appeal and supplement your food offering with salads, garnishes and fries to drive up the average spend.
Plan for success
The Great British Beer Festival returns to Olympia from the 6th – 10th August as we celebrate all things beer this summer. Organised annually by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), the GBBF has been running for over 40 years and is set to be even bigger.
With around 900 different drinks available, organisers call it the “Biggest pub in the world”. Of the 900 drinks, more than half are beers from British brewers.
Why not run your own British Beer Festival this summer and fly the flag proudly behind your bar?
Here’s some of our favourite British beers:
