AIt has been decided that New Approach will bypass Longchamp and run instead in the Champion S. at Newmarket,@ Bolger told the Racing Post. FIRES CALLS IT A CAREER The 61-year-old EarlieFires, long a fan favorite on the Chicago circuit, rodehis final race yesterday at Arlington Park. The Hall ofFame jockey was fifth aboard favored Manchu Prince ina claiming race on the grass. Born Mar. 19, 1947, inRivervale, Arkansas, Fires booted home his first winner,Carnation Kid, at Oaklawn on Mar. 6, 1965, the sameyear he led all apprentice jockeys in the nation with 224wins. During four decades, Fires captured riding titles atHawthorne, Arlington, Calder, Keeneland, Churchill,Gulfstream, and the Miles Park. Fires competed in fiverenewals of the Kentucky Derby, his best finish a third(promoted to second) on Francie's Hat in 1968, theyear Dancer=s Image was taken down after a medica-tion positive. Fires twice won seven races on a card atArlington, first on Aug. 16, 1983, and again May 25,1987. Fires had two Breeders' Cup mounts, both in >87.He came home fifth on 39-1 shot Explosive Darling inthe Mile and was fifth again in the Distaff on 17-1 shotMs. Margi. Fires, who has called In Reality his best-known mount, was inducted into racing=s Hall of Famein 2001. Fires was recognized yesterday with a win-ner=s circle celebration.
