CURLIN TAKES TO THE TURF In his first step on the road to a possible tilt at the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, Stonestreet and Midnight Cry Stable=s Curlin (Smart Strike) negotiated seven furlongs--around the >dogs=-- over Churchill Downs= Matt Winn Turf Course Tuesday. Partnered by regular rider Robby Albarado, the four- year-old covered the dis- tance in 1:31.20. The hand- some chestnut, who was accompanied by Hawaii Calls, recorded a final quarter in :24.20 and an eighth in :12.20, while galloping out a mile in 1:45.60. Curlin, who started about one length behind his stablemate, finished on even terms with the four-year-old. AWe are very excited to work him, he=s a tremendous athlete,@ said trainer Steve Asmussen. AWe were very pleased with how he looked. The main thing is that Robby loved how he felt.@ Reflecting on the colt=s first turf workout, Asmussen added, AHe was blowing off his move, but seven-eighths in 1:31 and change around the dogs here is a very good move. I thought he galloped out exceptional, as always. One thing that I really liked about it is when he went to the turf course and jogged off, he kept his presence about him--there was no worry. He was very confident and relaxed behind [Hawaii Calls]. He paced himself well and didn=t get too aggressive, like he was unsure about what he was supposed to do.@ CALL APPEAL PLACED Connections of Curtain Call (Fr) (Sadler's Wells) have appealed against the decision of The Curragh stewards not to promote the colt from fifth after suffering inter- ference in Sunday's G1 Irish Derby. Hampered by the errant Alessandro Volta (GB) as that rival veered left across his path inside the final furlong, the Luca Cumani-trained colt finished two lengths behind the fourth-placed Tartan Bearer (Ire), who was subse- quently handed third upon the former's disqualification. Syndicate Manager Patrick Cooper told Racing Post, "We are appealing, as we feel our horse should have been placed in front of Alessandro Volta at the stew- ards' inquiry. Our horse was badly hindered, and we believe it cost him the 2 1/2-length difference there was between him and Alessandro Volta at the finish. He is in good order after the race and, luckily, has no cuts or bruises. He put up a solid performance, but I would have been more delighted if he hadn't been interfered with." APPROACH ON BOX REST Princess Haya of Jordan's New Approach (Ire) (Gali- leo {Ire}) faces a short spell on the sidelines, according to trainer Jim Bolger. In a statement, the Coolcullen conditioner reported that x-rays carried out on the G1 Epsom Derby hero came back negative. "Veterinary examination has revealed soreness on the solar surface of New Approach's left hind limb," Bolger said in his statement. "X-rays of the limb revealed no abnormality, and pelvic ultra-sonography revealed no abnormality. However, there is soreness in the gluteal muscle area, and he will be box-rested until he is fully sound, when following further ultrasonography, he will begin walking exercise." DOING A LITTLE JIGG ON CANADA DAY Jim Dandy Stable=s Jiggs Coz (Cozzene) came from off the pace to score an emphatic victory in Tuesday=s GIII Dominion Day H. at Woodbine. Sent off the 3-1 second choice in the short four-horse field, the grey took control soon after the start, carved out pedestrian early fractions of :24.76, :50.07, 1:14.50 and 1:39.16 for a mile and was well within himself to post a 2 3/4- length victory over True Metropolitan (Proud and True). AWe thought [True Metropolitan] was going to go to the lead, but [Jiggs Coz] showed speed nice and easy,@ explained winning trainer Sid Attard. AWhen I saw the :50 [half-mile mark], I was very happy." cont. p2 www.taylormadestallions.com Curlin Reed Palmer photo

An easy winner in his latest start in the GI StephenFoster H. at Churchill Downs June 14, the reigningHorse of the Year may make his next start in either the11-furlong GI Man >o War S. or the 10-furlong GIIIArlington H., both scheduled for July 12. AThe perfectplan for us--for me, for Curlin and everybody associatedwith him--is to first establish his level of quality on theturf with his next race and not get ahead of ourselves,@said Steve Asmussen. AWe have to see if he can com-pete at the same level--a nice work is not a gradedstake.@ Looking down the road to a start in France,Asmussen said, AIf he can compete at his level on theturf and we get the race we expect, we will map outhow to win the Arc with him. I think getting him overthere immediately and getting him used to going right[handed] would be the biggest obstacle that we willface.@ As for the first step, Asmussen added, AI thinkwe establish that he=s as good a horse on the turf as heis on the dirt, then we get him over there and get himhim relaxed, comfortable and doing right.@

O'BRIEN TO RELY ON NELSON FOR ECLIPSEAidan O'Brien is likely to have a sole challenger in Der-rick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor's MountNelson (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) in Saturday's G1Coral-Eclipse S. at Sandown. Despite the presence ofKing of Rome (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Plan (Storm Cat)among the entries at the five-day stage, the Ballydoyleconditioner told Racing Post that the G1 Queen Anne S.fifth was the only intended runner. "We are looking atrunning only Mount Nelson in the Eclipse and JohnnyMurtagh will ride him," O=Brien told the trade daily."King of Rome will probably go to Hamburg for the G1Deutsches Derby on Sunday. Plan ran well when fourthat The Curragh on Sunday, and this weekend mightcome a bit too soon for him." Clerk of the Course An-drew Cooper is hoping that the current good-to-firmdescription remains for Saturday's race. "The forecastis a little bit of mixed bag, and I don't think we can betoo confident about the volume of rain we will see overthe next few days," Cooper explained. "The track isgood-to-firm, good in places [Tuesday] and we'd like tokeep it like that for the meeting." As for the line-up forthe 10-furlong contest, he added, "It lacks a Derbyhorse and a star, but it is a very busy time in the fixturelist with lots of competitive races of this sort. In termsof older horses, if you take out Duke of Marmalade, thebest around are there, so it will be a competitive andfascinating race."

‘VENICE’ & VENTURA ARRIVE AT HOLLYWOODDefending champion Lady of Venice (Fr) (Loup Solitaire)and GSW Ventura (Chester House) arrived at HollywoodPark from New York Monday in advance of a tilt atSaturday=s GII CashCall Mile. AShe=s very happy; I thinkshe loves California,@ said Fidel Santiago, who partnersMGSW Lady of Venice, runner-up in the GI Just a GameH. June 7. SALE TIME July is here (where did the time go?), and that meansit=s less than two weeks before Fasig-Tipton Kentuckykicks off the yearling sale season in Lexington, begin-ning 10 a.m. Monday, July 14. In light of the definitivedecline in first-half North American and European salescombined, plus the general economic downturn, con-signors will no doubt be approaching the sale seasonfrom a guarded viewpoint. True, the average for the6,147 horses sold in the first half of the year was up by7 percent over the corresponding sales from last year(see the Weekly Sales Ticker); but 1,000 fewer horseswere sold. The buyers were willing to pay a little more, but for fewer horses; in other words, they were beingmore selective. That trend is likely to continue. One bright spot is that Fasig July is a pinhookers=sale, and European pinhookers had a terrifictwo-year-old sale season, especially with Americanbreds. With the dollar continuing to flounder, even moreagainst the Euro than sterling, European buyers shouldbe back in force. They will be slowed down to theextent their seed money has been coming from playersin the Irish property market; that is taking a battering, from what we were told last weekend when we wereover for the Irish Derby. But to the extent they are notdependent on Irish property money, Europeanpinhookers and other European buyers are likely to beamong your best customers this year. Fasig=s New Sire Showcase, featuring yearlings bysires with their first and second crops constitutes 57percent of the sale, including all of Monday. Probablytwo-thirds of those are from their sires= first crops (we=llpreview them next week), but there are around 100yearlings catalogued by sires with their second crops ofyearlings, meaning their first crops are nowtwo-year-olds. As everybody knows, this is an espe-cially sensitive period for young sires, particularly inJuly. Many of them have barely had time to get off theground, and all the buzz is about this year=s crop ofyoung sires. It=s great for those sires which are off to afast start, but those who aren=t are eligible to get a littlebit lost in the shuffle. But the sire you=d really like tohave a yearling by right now is Dixie Union, who hasgone to the top of the two-year-old sires list after twofillies by him won stakes over the weekend: GardenDistrict in the GIII Debutante at Churchill Downs lastSaturday, and Bold Union, winner of Belmont=s AstoriaS. on Sunday. This happens to be his fifth crop of twoyear olds, but the consignors of the six yearlings by himat Fasig will surely find the phrase >timing is everything=working in their favor right now. cont. p7

"It's easy to see from these graphs that first-half calendar yearNorth American and European sales peaked in 2006-2007 ingross sales, but also in number catalogued and sold. Almost1,400 fewer horses (11%) were catalogued in these sales thanin 2007, with over 1,000 fewer sold (14%). The gross ($314.2-million) was down 8% from 2007, and down 10% from its 2006peak ($349.1-million). The strongest sectors this year havebeen two-year-olds sold in Europe and at OBS."

But I digress. Three-figure foal crops seem to helpthese days, so it=s no surprise three of the top fourfreshman sires by progeny earnings right now (table p8)

have over 100 two-year-olds in their first crops; theexception is Roar of the Tiger (Storm Cat), a Hartley/DeRenzo (Walmac South) Florida stallion who, like thesuccessful New York sire Freud, is a stakes-placed fullbrother to North America=s number three sire, Giant=sCauseway. From 61 named foals, according to informa-tion provided to us by The Jockey Club InformationSystems, Roar of the Tiger has had 19 runners and fivewinners--one of only three first-crop sires to have siredfive winners so far. He is currently in second place onthe North American freshman sire table, splitting twoAshford (Coolmore) stallions with over 130 named foalseach: leader Lion Heart (Tale of the Cat), with sevenwinners, including a minor stakes winner; and ChapelRoyal (Montbrook), who has five winners, and 24 start-ers. Medaglia D= Oro (El Prado), with more than 120named foals, is one of two freshman sires with fourwinners so far; the other is Omega Code (Elusive Qual-ity). He, like Roar of the Tiger, is a Florida stallion;Omega Code has one entered at Fasig, Roar of theTiger none. No doubt these will be selling at OBS nextmonth. The three Kentucky triple-figure foal stallions--Lion Heart, Chapel Royal, and Medaglia D= Oro--havefive, 10, and six, respectively, catalogued at Fasig.

Numbers aside, I=ve always fancied Medaglia D= Oro.He=s a good-looking horse, and ran first or second 13times in Grade I or Grade II races. He was a two-turnhorse and didn=t win at two himself, so if he=s showingup prominently on freshman sire lists, it=s a bonus. There are about 60 yearlings catalogued at Fasig bysires with their first three-year-olds, so this is their thirdcrop of yearlings. Airdrie has been introducing theirmid-range first-year sires at Fasig July for over 20 years,so it=s a pretty sure bet that the 14 yearlings by theirsophomore sires--Harlan=s Holiday (Harlan), with ninecatalogued and Proud Citizen (Gone West) with five--will be well received. The crop=s number three sire bycumulative progeny earnings, Ashford=s Van Nistle-rooy(Storm Cat) has four catalogued. There are 10 by Posse(Silver Deputy), top Freshman Sire of last year, but whohas dropped to fourth on the cumulative list by virtueof a slow first half of >08. So now=s the time to buy;he=s maybe had a few who haven=t trained on, but thespeed was there, that=s for certain. Adena Springs= MachoUno (Holy Bull) has five catalogued, though sadly theirFlorida-based dual GI Santa Anita H. winner MilwaukeeBrew (Wild Again) has none. Another Florida sire whohas had a very good >08, Repent (Louis Quatorze), hasfive yearlings catalogued. Those two are three-four onthe >08 sophomore sire earnings list (bloodhorse.com),trailing only Harlan=s Holiday and Proud Citizen.

FIRE PLANS UNDECIDED Michael Tabor, DerrickSmith and Susan Magnier's G1 Irish Derby winnerFrozen Fire (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}) was reported to haveemerged in good order from his win Sunday, but con-nections are keeping their options open regarding futuretargets. Aidan O'Brien also revealed that the demotedAlessandro Volta (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) was none theworse for his effort. "Frozen Fire seems to be fine fol-lowing his win, but we will wait until he does a bit laterin the week before thinking about where he might runnext,@ O=Brien told Racing Post. AAlessandro Volta wasobviously galloped into from behind and came back witha few little cuts, but he walked out fine this morning."

TUSCAN APPEAL SET The Irish Turf Club have set adate for the appeal against the disqualification of Tus-can Evening (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) from second placein the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Hubie de Burgh's JohnMurphy-trained filly was judged to have caused interfer-ence to Carribean Sunset (Ire) in the May 25 CurraghClassic and was subsequently demoted behind thatrival. Connections will have their appeal heard atLeopardstown racecourse July 22.

YOUMZAIN ASCOT-BOUND Jaber Abdullah'sYoumzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) will point for Ascot=s G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S., trainer MickChannon announced yesterday. Runner-up to DylanThomas (Ire) 12 months ago, the five-year-old will bidto go one better in the July 26 showpiece following hissuccess in Sunday's G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. AHelooks to have come out of the race great and had acanter this morning, so we'll aim at the King Georgenow as long as Jaber agrees," Channon said. "We weredelighted on Sunday, as he was getting a reputationand people were starting to call him names. He's al-ways been genuine and has done nothing wrong all hislife, but he's just bumped into some very good horseslike Rail Link (GB) and Dylan Thomas."

Dino Doubt for Ascot... Doctor Dino (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}) will likely sidestepthe King George, according to trainer Richard Gibson.Last year's GI Man o' War S. and G1 Hong Kong Vasewinner finished third behind Youmzain (Ire) atSaint-Cloud. "He came out of the race well and is ingood shape, but we give full marks to Youmzain,"Gibson told PA Sport. "We had raced against him be-fore and we'd beaten him before, but he was veryimpressive at the weekend. We have no immediateplans, and we said we'd wait for 10 days or so afterthe race and see where we are, but I would describethe King George as doubtful. With a horse like DoctorDino there are so many options abroad, especially in theautumn, so we're in no rush to make a plan."
