BREEDERS’ CUP

BULLETIN

Breeders= Cup Classic cont.

Mine That Bird will break from the inside in his questto get his first win since his rail-skimming success inthe GI Kentucky Derby. AWe're going to be near theback, so we might as well save ground,@ said trainerChip Woolley Jr. AIt's good. I'm glad because he won'thave to do a lot of work from there. He was towardsthe outside in the [GI] Goodwood [at Oak Tree Oct.10], and [jockey] Calvin [Borel] had to work to get backinside. I want him covered up, and it will be easy to dofrom there. It's the perfect spot. I just told HRTV thatI'd be happy to draw the one, two, or three hole."

Playing Favorites A total of 149 horses, including 30 from Europe, passed the entry box for the 14 races of the Breeders=Cup World Championships. Conduit (Ire) (Dalakhani

{Ire}) and Goldikova (Ire)(Anabaa) are favored to defendtheir titles in the GI Emirates Air-line BC Turf and GI TVG BCMile, respectively, at 7-5 and 8-5. Unbeaten Lookin at Lucky(Smart Strike) is the 8-5morning-line favorite in the GI Grey Goose BC Juvenile, butwill have to overcome the out-

side 13 post. AI really wasn't sure where I wanted him,but he is very manageable so it shouldn't be a problem, and there's nothing I can do about it anyway,@ trainerBob Baffert summed up. It=s the other side of the gatefor Baffert=s GI Sentient Jet BC Sprint hopefulZensational (Unbridled=s Song). "Of course I don't likeit, you never like the one hole especially with speedhorses, but they all have to break,@ the Hall of Famernoted. AI was hoping to get the outside and we're stuckin the one hole, but all the real speed is inside.@

Emirates Melbourne Cup cont.

AI didn't give him a hope in the run when he was

trapped deep,@ admitted winning trainer Mark

Kavanagh. AThen he was going so strongly to the line, I

thought, >He won=t be able to keep going.= He was so

good on Saturday and he'd improved since that run. His

preparation was timed to perfection, and he came right

at the right time. I didn't expect to win it. It hasn't sunk

in yet.@ Click for the Racing Post chart or the free brisnet.com

Crime Scene Impressive in Second... Godolphin=s Crime Scene (Ire) (Royal Applause {GB})provided his owners with a third runner-up effort in theMelbourne Cup, following Central Park in 1999 andGive The Slip in 2001. Saeed bin Suroor, the Godolphintrainer, commented from Australia, "Crime Scene ran agreat race. The blinkers he was wearing for the firsttime in a race made a difference--he was more focusedas he had shown when working in them on Saturday. Also the two miles suited him very well. Crime Scenehad a nice position all the way and [jockey] Kerrin[McEvoy] gave him a good ride. For a second in thestraight, I thought he was going to win, but he wasbeaten by a better horse.@

Hayes Left Red-Faced... Trainer David Hayes was fuming after Racing Victoriaruled Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire})out of theA$5.5-million race at 7:30 a.m following an hour-longinspection and debate with veterinarians. The four-year-old, due to have his first start for Hayes sinceswitching from trainer Aidan O=Brien with a change ofownership, was inspected by vets on race eve before afurther early morning examination, with a trio of vetsruling the horse was lame in his near foreleg. AIf everyhorse was subjected to what this horse has been today, there would be only four runners in the Cup, and Iwould not have a runner at the meeting,@ said Hayes, who had 11 other runners engaged at the meeting.

Changingoftheguard was examined at Flemingtonbefore the dispute continued at Hayes= yard with chiefsteward Terry Bailey stating, AMr. Hayes is upset...butwe've got three vets here, three very experienced vetsthat say the horse is lame.@ Bailey said the issue hadonly come to light in the last 48 hours. Changingof-theguard was a $21 chance in Cup betting. His with-drawal meant only 23 horses took their place in thefield.

Vigor Controversy Continues… A hot topic at Flemington was the controversial deci-sion by the VRC committee not to promote the DannyO=Brien-trained Vigor (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}), a last-startthird in the Caulfield Cup Oct. 17, to the 24-horse field.O=Brien opted not to run Vigor in the Mackinnon S. andthe horse was 25th in the order of entry. The commit-tee deliberated on Saturday night for more than twohours before denying Vigor a berth in the Cup.

FROM THE DESKOF...

Bill OppenheimTHE NEW YORK YANKEES Though I don=t know the affiliation of all of the TDNstaff who work out of the Red Bank office, I feel prettysure TDN co-publishers Barry (Phillies) and Sue (Yankeearch-rivals Boston Red Sox) are none too happy aboutthe impending 27th World Series victory for the NewYork Yankees [Editor=s Note: There are three solid Yan-kees fans on the TDN staff]. Of course, I might betalking completely out of my hat; I didn=t really followbaseball even when I didn=t live in Scotland, so what doI know? The Phillies are putting up a great fight, andthat ace pitcher and home run machine Chase Utleyhave been a lot of fun to watch. But they might be outof luck by tonight. The horse business never begrudges a Yankee win, because their controlling owners, the Steinbrennerfamily, have been prominent breeders and owners ofracehorses for at least the last 30 years. But, asidefrom the familiar European jibe A=World= Series?,@ base-ball=s season-ending championships command a wideand dedicated audience. We=d be pretty happy withtheir numbers for our American season-ending champi-onships, the Breeders= Cup, at Santa Anita this week-end. We do have quite a few international players suit-ing up, too. More than baseball, anyway. Within the limitations agreed by baseball=s league

structure (overseen by a Commissioner, please note),

the New York Yankees have sustained their position as

baseball=s most successful franchise through the years

by spending top dollar and buying the best. It doesn=t

always work out, but when it does, that >class edge=

the top dollar can buy can often make the crucial differ-

ence between contender and champion.

Last week we did some totaling up for this columnthat told us that Maktoum >friends and family= bought,by our estimate, something more than 400 yearlings, for somewhere over $100 million, during the last fourmonths. See, unlike baseball they have no salary cap,and in our sport=s draft process, anybody can draft asmany as they want and/or can afford. Over the last fewyears a lot has been written about how poor theDarley/Godolphin team=s results have been, consideringthe resources they=ve allocated to try and buy the best.Cont. p12

Oppenheim cont. But, of course, between the buying and the results isthe development. For whatever reasons, from an out-sider=s point of view, the failure to achieve greatersuccess was more likely to be somewhere in the devel-opmental stages than in the drafting process. Although, by the way, they=re not kidding when theyreflect back on how Sheikh Mohammed and his familyhave put Dubai on the map. However much they=veplowed into their favorite hobby over the years, it is adrop in the bucket compared to the money generatedby the creation, literally from nowhere, of the brand>Dubai.= The money they=ve put into horses really can becalled an >investment= if you look at it in the context ofthe creation of an internationally successful brand, which in this case happens to be the country of Dubai. That has definitely worked. Beginning in 2009, though, we noticed that there hadbeen a diversification of Darley/Godolphin interests inwhat seemed a more organized way. In Europe, besidesthe now-familiar Godolphin operation, big consignmentsof horses were sent to (1) Andre Fabre, whose yardSheikh Mohammed bought (these horses usually run inSheikh Mohammed=s name and the Darley maroon andwhite); (2) John Gosden, who now trains most of thehorses that run in the colors of Princess Haya, Sheikh

Mohammed=s wife; and (3) Mark Johnston, who trainsfor Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Sheikh Moham-med=s son and Dubai=s Crown Prince. TheDarley/Godolphin operation also had over 100 runnersin North America this year, which either run underGodolphin (Saeed bin Suroor, trainer; Rick Mettee, assistant) or Darley. About two-thirds of the 92 Darleystarters were trained by either Kiaran McLaughlin, TomAlbertrani, or Eoin Harty.Cont. p13

Oppenheim cont.

So here come the disclaimers and qualifications. First, huge thanks to Grant Harris at Weatherby=s and MarkAdkins at EquineLine for finding and supplying us withthe information we=ve used to compile the accompany-ing table showing Godolphin/Darley, etc. 2009 results. These were through Oct. 25, I think was the date formost of the stats, and Darley/Godolphin have had an-other good weekend since then. So the numbers arealready a little out of date. Second, whereas we didinclude Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid=s Shadwell Estates inthe yearling buying information last week, we have nottried to include his operation in these statistics. It wasGodolphin/Darley that transformed their organizationalsetup at the beginning of the year, so we wanted tosee, specifically for that camp, what the results havebeen. Because there simply isn=t an international horseracing data bureau that might create comparative data,we don=t really have anything concrete to comparethese figures to. But I would say they=re pretty impres-sive. They would not be happy about having only twopercent Group/Grade 1 winners from 2009 starters, butliterally in all other categories these numbers look good;and if they=re progressing, and moving forward in allother categories, the Grade I winners will come--maybea few more this weekend. In Europe, the combined four >entities= (I=ll bet theyloved being called that, an >entity=) had 373 starterswhen these figures were compiled, for 208 winners (56percent winners from starters); 23 percent wins tostarts; 38 black-type winners (10 percent), of which areally impressive 30 (eight percent) were group win-ners, though only four (just one percent of starters)were Group 1 winners (here we must say a horse couldbe counted in two or three different countries as two orthree different horses, but that does not materiallyaffect the picture). In North America, only 20 horseshad started under the Godolphin banner, but talk aboutsuccessfully hand-picked: 11 black-type winners (55percent of starters), nine graded-stakes winners (45percent), and six Grade I winners (30 percent). Wow. Combined, these six entities racing on two continentshad 485 starters, which made 1,628 starts. They had263 winners (54 percent of starters), which won 378races--23 percent of starts. They had 64 black-typewinners (13 percent of starters), of which 48--a deeplyimpressive 10 percent--were graded/group stakes win-ners. They did still have only two percent Grade I win-ners, though 11 Grade I winners in a year doesn=t seemlike that bad a number to have. I=m sure they=d haveliked quite a few more outside the small North Ameri-can Godolphin stable, though. Their combined earningsstood at $7,372,864 in North America when thesefigures were compiled ($21,186 per start), and,9,289,583 in Europe (,7,257 per start, or about$12,000).

Bill Oppenheim may be contacted at [email protected] cc TDN at [email protected].

Combined, that=s just at $22,700,000 in earnings. You can say those numbers pale in comparison to the$100 million their friends and family spent on yearlingsthis year, or the estimated $200 million they spent onstallion prospects in 2007 (first foals at the sale nextweek by Street Sense, Hard Spun, Any Given Saturday,Discreet Cat, etc.), but that=s not entirely the point. Partof the equation is about success on the racetrack aswell as the monetary considerations and putting Dubaion the map, and in the racing department it seems tous things are looking a lot brighter for the Darley armiesthan was the case just 12 months ago. The point could be brought home on an internationalstage this weekend. In what shapes up as a brilliantweekend of racing--I=m on my way, and excited to begoing to the Breeders= Cup for the first time sinceBelmont in 2005--the Godolphin/Darley extended teamis fielding 16 runners over the two days= racing (seeattached table). Seven of them are Grade/Group 1winners this year. Another four are Grade/Group 2winners, two more are Grade/Group 3 winners (that=s13 in all); two (Midshipman and Cocoa Beach) wereGrade I winners last year, and one of the two-year-olds(Vale of York) is Group 1-placed this year. Placementhas been one of their strengths this year, and this isarguably the biggest stage of all. I=ll bet a lot of thesehorses at least hit the board.

“The Fasig October Sale saw a 10 percent jump (from 64.4

to 74.9) in percentage sold/ring. With 11 percent fewer

catalogued, the gross was up six percent, the average three

percent. But it was a small victory, at the presumably slots-

fueled ‘lower middle’ end of the market. The bottom left

graph shows that, compared to two years ago in 2007, the

number catalogued in the combined yearling market was

down eight percent, the number sold down 14 percent, the

gross down 36 percent, and the average down 26 percent.”

“These two Tables highlight some significant differences inthe declines between the North American and Europeanyearling markets. Note, specifically, that in 2009 thepercentage sold, of those catalogued, was almost 71 percentin Europe, but only 59 percent in North America. Thereason is the percentage of withdrawals, which declined to8.4 percent in Europe in 2009, but climbed to 17 percent(from under 12 percent in 2006) in North America. That’sa big part of the reason Europe’s gross is down 27 percentsince 2007, while North America’s is down 43 percent.”

AUSTRALIAN BREEDERS UP IN ARMS UpperHunter Valley Thoroughbred breeders are up in armsover proposals for more coal mines in the region. TheUpper Hunter Shire--where major farms such as Darley,Arrowfield and Vinery are among more than 70 com-mercial Thoroughbred breeding operations--will have itsfirst coal mine if the Bickham coal mine, near EmiratesPark Stud in Murrurundi, proceeds. Proponents of themine recently released a long-awaited water study thatis on public exhibition until Dec. 4. If approved, themine would extract up to 36 million tons of coal overabout 25 years. While a comparatively small operation, its location in close proximity to the Pages River--amajor tributary for the famed Segenhoe Valley Thor-oughbred nurseries--has created considerable concern.Arrowfield chief John Messara said the Bickham projectcould have significant adverse impacts on groundwaterand the Pages River. AUnless we all act now, the life-span of the local industries that support the UpperHunter towns and families with jobs, income and life-style, will be in jeopardy,@ Messara said. AWith therelease of the water report, the gun has been fired andthe race is now on.@

In Denman, Thoroughbred syndicator and local busi-nessman Craig Benjamin is spearheading a push toblock plans for two new coal exploration licences.Denman, about 50 kilometers south east of Scone inthe Upper Hunter, is home to studs such as Coolmoreand Darley=s Woodlands operation. AWe have enoughmines in the area and, all due respect to the coal com-panies, this is our area, this is our little part of theworld, and there [are] other industries in this area apartfrom coal mining,@ Benjamin said.
