TANAKA CONVICTED OF FRAUD Prominent racehorse owner and businessman GaryTanaka was convicted Wednesday of defrauding clientsand could face prison time, according to publishedreports. A Manhattan jury convicted Tanaka and busi-

ness partner Alberto Vilar, whotogether operated Amerindo In-vestment Advisors, of stealing$20 million from clients in orderto keep the firm afloat and payoff Vilar's personal expenses.Amerindo made billions for in-vestors during the internet boomof the 1990s, but the companywas left reeling when techstocks nosedived in 2000. Inone example of fraud providedby bloomberg.com, the mentook $5 million from one inves-tor and used $3.1 million to payanother investor, while using

$650,00 to pay the firm=s bills. Vilar also personallyused $1 million to fulfill an outstanding charitablepledge. The jury convicted Vilar on all 12 countsbrought against him, including conspiracy and securitiesfraud, and Tanaka on three of the 12 counts. Tanaka, 65, has been under partial house arrest inNew York since he and Vilar were arrested in May of2005. He hasn=t seen his wife, who lives in London, in3 1/2 years. Texas Racing Commission Approves Retama Dates: The Texas Racing Commission approved the requestto move Sam Houston Race Park=s Thoroughbred racedates to Retama Park as a result of damage suffered bythe Houston race track from Hurricane Ike last month.The Texas Racing Commission held a public meetingyesterday at The Park and agreed to relocate 43 liveracing dates to Retama Park in San Antonio. The re-maining 12 days scheduled for Sam Houston werecancelled and will not be rescheduled. AWe are ex-tremely disappointed that we had to cancel the Thor-oughbred meet at The Park this winter,@ said AndreaYoung, Chief Operating Officer of Sam Houston RacePark. AHowever, we are proud of efforts made by theTexas Racing Commission, the horsemen and our coun-terparts at Retama to preserve wintertime racing inTexas. We plan to support Retama in any way possi-ble.@ The additional racing dates will extend Retama=scurrent meet, which opened Aug. 29, through Feb. 28,2009, creating 78 days of live Thoroughbred racing.
