Dynaformer’s 28th Stakes Performer of 2008 is PICK SIX WAIT A WHILE RETIRED Champion Wait a While (Maria=s Mon--Flirtatious, by A.P. Indy) has been retired after finishing third in the GI Breeders= Cup F/M Turf, according to Daily Racing Form. "She's in Kentucky," Michael McCarthy, assis- tant to trainer Todd Pletcher, told DRF. "She will be bred. Rac- ing is over for her." The five- year-old=s 2009 mate has not yet been determined. Bred in Ken- tucky by W.S. Farish and W. Temple Webber Jr., the grey was purchased by Tim Hamm for $50,000 as a yearling at KEESEP and, just a few months later, blossomed into a $260,000 OBSFEB juvenile. Racing in the colors of Alan Cohen=s Arindel Farm, Wait a While graduated by five lengths when switched to grass in her second start at two, then added a 6 1/2- length tally in the off-the-turf Miss Grillo S. before capping 2005 with a third in the GII Demoiselle S. That versatility was showcased during her championship 2006 campaign, which she kicked off with a 14-length romp in the GII Davona Dale S. over a sloppy track. Second in the GI Ashland S. and fourth in the GI Ken- tucky Oaks, Wait a While then rattled off four straight wins: an off-the-turf GII Sands Point S., plus the grassy GI American Oaks, GII Lake Placid S. and GI Yellow Ribbon S. She could only manage fourth to Ouija Board (GB), Film Maker and Honey Ryder in the Breeders= Cup at Churchill, but had done enough to secure an Eclipse Award as the nation=s top three-year-old filly. Wait a While came back to win two of six starts last year, the GII Ballston Spa H. and GIII Honey Fox H., and also hit the board in the GI Matriarch S. and GI Flower Bowl Invitational. After winning the GII San Gorgonio H. Jan. 14, she was sidelined with a minor injury, but returned to successfully defend her title in the Ballston Spa Aug. 21 before adding another Yellow Ribbon trophy Sept. 27. The five-year-old finished third by a length in the Breeders= Cup at Santa Anita Oct. 24 in what would be her career finale. Wait a While compiled a record of 24-12-3-5 and bankrolled $2,394,916. TANAKA CONVICTED OF FRAUD Prominent racehorse owner and businessman Gary Tanaka was convicted Wednesday of defrauding clients and could face prison time, according to published reports. A Manhattan jury convicted Tanaka and busi- ness partner Alberto Vilar, who together operated Amerindo In- vestment Advisors, of stealing $20 million from clients in order to keep the firm afloat and pay off Vilar's personal expenses. Amerindo made billions for in- vestors during the internet boom of the 1990s, but the company was left reeling when tech stocks nosedived in 2000. In one example of fraud provided by bloomberg.com, the men took $5 million from one inves- tor and used $3.1 million to pay another investor, while using $650,00 to pay the firm=s bills. Vilar also personally used $1 million to fulfill an outstanding charitable pledge. The jury convicted Vilar on all 12 counts brought against him, including conspiracy and securities fraud, and Tanaka on three of the 12 counts. Tanaka, 65, has been under partial house arrest in New York since he and Vilar were arrested in May of 2005. He hasn=t seen his wife, who lives in London, in 3 1/2 years. Tanaka=s lawyers said that he was receiv- ing cancer treatment in 2003 and 2004, when many of the criminal acts took place, and had surgery to Are- move and replace@ most of his lower jaw, according to bloomberg.com. Tanaka, who was in court when the verdict was read, was convicted of conspiracy, securi- ties fraud and investment adviser fraud. The following summer it was announcedthat the Florida-bred would enter stud at theGreathouse family=s Glencrest Farm near Midway, Ken-tucky.

AWe thought he was a brilliant miler,@ Glencrest=sDavid Greathouse saidyesterday. AHe was ableto win going further andwe were looking for ahorse to replace CleverTrick when we decidedto buy into him. Wethought he was a veryhard-knocking horse thatbeat some good horsesduring his career, and

Consigned by Glencrestto the OBS Fall Mixed Sale, the bay was hammereddown to Spurr LLC for $77,000. AHe was probably as good a baby as we ever raised;as good-looking a horse as we could raise,@ Greathouserecollected.
