Humes manufactures a comprehensiverange of standard headwalls to conform

with the requirements of individual stateand local authorities.

These headwalls may be customised toaccommodate multiple conduit applicationsfor both pipes and box culverts.

Also available on a regional basis are slopingheadwalls and endwalls - these are usedprimarily in property access applications.

Headwalls are used at both the inlet andthe outlet of a pipe system. While they areprimarily used in culvert applications theywill have application at the outlet point of astormwater system.

Culvert Applications

The natural water way will generally

be wider than the culvert structure andtransition sections will be required to receivethe upstream water, direct it through theculvert and then return it to the naturalwater course in an undisturbed manner.

Where the velocity of the water is of theorder of 4 metres per second the headwallis the most common structure used toeffectively achieve these conditions.

The wingwalls train the water and the

base slab combined with the wing wallsprovide protection for the embankmentand surrounds. Where exit velocitiesare high it may be necessary to incorporateenergy dissipators into the structure. Wheresediments are carried in the water it may benecessary to incorporate a silt trap at theexit.

Stormwater Applications

Where headwalls are used in theseapplications the key issue will be to train thewater in the path that will cause minimumturbulence and hence optimise the hydrauliccapacity of the line.

Irrigation Headwall - Cotton Area NSW

This headwall sited in a channel incorporates a pumpstation. The water is sourced from the Macquarie Riverand gravitates to the headwall where it is pumped intoan adjacent water storage area.

The system may be reversed so that the flow of waterreturns ensuring that the demand for water may bemet.

Modular Headwall - SE Queensland

The drainage design for a canal estate required aheadwall to be fitted onto a 2100 mm diameter pipe ina submerged situation.

The headwall was precast in modules and assembledat site and lowered into position, fitted and secured bydivers.

The insitu alternative was to construct a coffer dam,dewater the site, pour an insitu structure and thenremove the coffer dam.

This precast option was supplied and installed for 25%of the estimated cost of the insitu option.

Headwalls can be custom designed and manufactured tosuit the complete range of steel reinforced concrete pipe

and reinforced concrete box culverts we supply.

When you are designing, specifying or ordering aheadwall(s) it is necessary for us to obtain project specificdetails from you. These details will include the conduittype (Steel Reinforced Concrete Pipe, Box Culvertor Custom Profiled Pipe), the exposure classification(freshwater, saltwater or other) and the site specificgeometry including number of cells and angle of conduitto headwall if other than normal.

Your headwall(s) will then be manufactured tospecification and will perform in accordance with yourexpectations.
