The High School is an independent day school (HMC) for Boys and Girlsaged 4 to 18. Our Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form are based on-site atWaverley Mount and our Infant School is based across the road at Lovell House.

Development of teaching and learning is a key emphasis of the School,seeking to develop our pedagogy to deliver lessons that are challenging andinspiring. THE ROLE The Head of Cricket is a long-standing role, supported by a strong interest in the game from the student intake fromReception through to Year 13. The School is ambitious for its most successful cricketers - some of whom go on to play atfull County level- while also encouraging of the students who simply want to enjoy the sport at a recreational level. Thevacancy provides a great opportunity for an experienced practitioner to build a wide-ranging programme. The scope ofthe position is extensive, and the successful candidate will bring imagination, innovation and creative thinking. It is apotentially career-defining opportunity for the right person to make a lasting impact on the game.

Nottingham High School has its own sector leading sports ground at Valley Road in Nottingham, next to the CityHospital. With a dedicated team of grounds staff, nets, changing rooms and a pavilion, the School is able to provide firstclass wickets to all of the teams for both fixtures and training.

Within the school, the Head of Cricket will be responsible for leading a programme which will inspire pupils and staff toparticipate, aspire and excel, both in curriculum Games and the co-curricular programme . This will includeestablishing, and monitoring, an industry-leading coaching provision, and overseeing all aspects of player – and coach –development in the school. The successful candidate will coach at all levels across the school, inside and beyond thecurriculum, and also support the most aspirational athletes in their quest for representative honours. S/he/they will leadfrom the front. This will include managing the competition programme, and supporting logistics, ensuring that anambitious, and appropriate, high quality experience is provided for all pupils. (The Head of Cricket will also be expectedto contribute to one or more aspects of the school’s Autumn/Spring Term sports programme, in support of the activitiesof the wider Sports Department.)

The successful candidate will have a significant background – and status – in Cricket, as a player and coach. Experiencein schools is desirable, though not essential, as are coaching qualifications, or the willingness to acquire them. The hourswill be flexible, reflecting the varied nature of the position, but will involve a strong commitment to after-school,weekend and school holiday activities. Candidates will be expected to work with school teams on every Saturday duringterm times, throughout the year.

Cricket at Nottingham High School is a wide-ranging project, that extends beyond delivering the school programme.The successful candidate will be capable of wide, strategic thinking resulting in a range of impacts and partnerships thatwill enhance the school’s reputation in the game, and the community. S/he/they will also ensure that the School'scricketing facilities are used to maximum effect, both by the school’s own students and also by the wider community.Establishing collaborations with other schools, clubs and performance programmes will be an important part of this.

There is an exciting opportunity to introduce new initiatives, and to further develop the game in the area. This willrequire the Head of Cricket to show a range of skills, including the capacity to build positive relationships with a varietyof other stakeholders. Entrepreneurial ability will be important in attracting and developing new cricket activities andcompetitions at Valley Road and in our sports hall / nets. This includes the capacity to establish, and manage, anextensive programme of outreach activity, in support both of pupil recruitment and of the school’s charitable purpose.

The successful candidate will be a role model for pupils, and an ambassador for the school in the Cricket community. Animportant requirement of the position will be the ability to establish a positive reputation for the game in the schoolamongst pupils, parents and the wider Cricket community.

THE SPORTS DEPARTMENTNottingham High School has a strong tradition in PhysicalEducation, with sport playing a vital part within the life ofthe school.

Teams represent the school in a variety of sports. The mainAutumn Term sports are hockey for girls and rugby forboys, in the spring term netball for girls and hockey for boyswith in the summer term cricket for girls and boys. Otherteams are organised for swimming, athletics, badminton,handball, cross-country, tennis and football (for SixthFormers not involved in the major sports).

Facilities include a fully equipped sports hall with a recentlydeveloped fitness suite. A climbing wall, gymnasium and a25m swimming pool complete the facilities on site. Playingfields are situated 2 miles away at Valley Road and have anenviable reputation for the fine surfaces that are preparedby the three groundsmen. In addition to 3 permanentcricket squares, 4 artificial strips and 8 artificial cricket nets,there are 5 rugby pitches, 6 netball/tennis courts, fullathletics facilities including grass 400m and 200m tracksand also 2 football pitches. Our Hockey programme is basedat the Nottingham Hockey Centre, where following theaddition of our two new pitches is the largest Hockey centrein the UK. We also use this facility to play some softballcricket. We utilise other sports facilities in Nottinghamincluding West Bridgford Tennis centre, NottinghamSquash club and the Harvey Hadden Athletics stadium.

The department also works closely with local and nationalsports organisations to develop links and coachingopportunities. Nottingham High School hosts the MCCFNottingham Cricket Hub and has supported an U15s hub forLoughborough Lightning netball for the last 3 seasons. Inaddition, we work closely with local schools to providefootball and cricket festivals at Valley Road as a part of ouroutreach programme.

There are currently eight full time members of the PE departmentincluding, an athletic development professional and a graduateteaching assistant. All staff teach both in the senior and junior schoolwith three members of the department delivering the A level course.The department is fortunate to have at least another 30 teaching staffwho help to deliver the games curriculum and assist with co-curricular sport. Currently, at least 25 staff assist with running schoolteams across a wide co -curricular programme.

In addition to curriculum PE the department teaches A Level PE.This is becoming ever more popular as a subject with studentswishing to study all kinds of subjects at university fromPhysiotherapy to Medicine.

As part of a thriving PE and Games department is is essential that thesuccessful candidate is available to run sports practices in other sportsafter school and is available on Saturdays to run / manage sportsteams throughout the academic year.

The department is looking forward to running sports tours againonce the pandemic situation improves. Consequently, the successfulcandidate may have the opportunity to be a part of these toursduring both term time and school holidays. In the past thedepartment has toured the UK and taken tours to South Africa, NewZealand, Argentina, the Caribbean and the USA and hopes to do soonce again.

Professional Development

The High School believes in, supports and resources anextensive system of continuing professionaldevelopment and all teachers and non-teaching staffparticipate in it throughout their careers. The School hasdeveloped an Appraisal Scheme for all staff. Eachmember of staff has a Line Manager with whom theyhave Professional Review or appraisal meetings for theirindividual personal development. In this case, the Head of Department is the line manager.

Working Environment

This is an enjoyable and stimulating place to work. Weoffer a wide and varied range of staff benefits includingfree refreshments and school lunch during term time.When permitted under Covid guidelines, staff organise aseries of social events during the year including anannual Christmas event. Many of the facilities of theSchool are open to staff and their families, including thegym and swimming pool.

For PE internships the School offers breakfast, lunchand dinner through school catering on weekdays duringterm-time, plus food as provided at fixtures.

Living in Nottingham

Good quality housing in Nottinghamshire and thesurrounding counties is affordable and as a result manyof our staff have a good choice of areas to live in andexperience a good quality of life. Most live within atwenty-minute commute of school. There are manyattractive villages surrounding the city as well as goodquality housing in the city. In the centre there has beenconsiderable development of high-quality apartments.

The School is well served by public transport and is onthe tram network. In addition, there is car parkingavailable on site.
