After a heart-breaking extra-inning loss in the Region 18 Championship last season, the College of South-ern Idaho softball team is setting its sites on hosting the Region 18 Tournament, winning it and placing at the NJCAA National Tournament.

The Golden Eagles return nine players from that team and have added one of the most athletic and talented freshmen groups in the history of CSI softball.

“I think we have the perfect combination of experience and youth and of speed and power,” said CSI head coach Nick Baumert. “We are loaded with athleticism and competitive spirit which will only make us better as the season progresses. Our depth will force the players to compete every day in practice to get into the starting lineup.”

Last year, the Golden Eagles were young in the circle but experienced at the plate. This year that role will be reversed early.

Region 18 first team selection Jyl Eckstein and Jessi Duncan return at the pitcher position. They combined for 43 of CSI’s 44 victories. They will be joined by Kimberly High School standout Nellie Makings and California native Grace Combs to give the Eagles depth.

“I think having more options will be huge for us this season,” Baumert said. “All four bring different strengths and attributes. We will be able to utilize their strengths to make us more dominant in the circle.”

Behind the plate, Kelsie Webster returns, having caught 42 games for CSI as a freshman. She will be joined

by freshman Averie Schroeder and sophomore Bailee Montgomery.“Kelsie has a great relationship with our two returning pitchers, having caught them all last year. Averie has

caught Nellie for eight years and that experience will be invaluable. Bailee gives us depth but also a pinch-hit option at the plate.”

The Golden Eagles return starters Nikki Brailsford and TJ Surrage in the infield as well as red-shirt sopho-more Chelsea Buttars. They will be joined by freshmen Patti Ferguson, Kylee Hogue and Lea Hopson.

“All six of these kids can really play the game of softball,” Baumert said. “We will be very quick and have the ability to rotate players depending on who is playing well.”

Alyana Watson and Holly Ritz return in the outfield. Newcomers include Gabby Stacey, Brooke Boggess, Tyler Wilkinson and Whitney Carlton.

“Our outfielders run well and are solid defensively as well as at the plate,” Baumert said. “If they aren’t play-ing in the field, we can use them in pinch-run situations as well as to pinch hit.”

Losing 80 home runs and 382 RBI out of the hitting lineup will take time to replace but Baumert is hopeful the returning sophomores as well as the incoming freshmen are talented enough to adjust quickly.

“It definitely will be an adjustment to lose the experience we had last year early in the season,” Baumert said. “But I have no doubt once this groups sees a lot of pitching early, they have the ability to make their own mark on CSI softball.”

Region 18 should be deeper and stronger across the board this season. Salt Lake CC returns its top pitcher from a team that placed second in the nation so early the road to a Region 18 Championship will run through Salt Lake. Colorado NW and Southern Nevada have new coaches. Every team is much improved this season

and will add parity throughout the league.“Every weekend will be a battle,” Baumert said. “With 48 confer-

ence games, we will need to remember that the season is a marathon not a sprint. Still, every game is important and if we want to host regionals we need to take care of business.”

The winner of the regular season will host regionals with the win of the Region 18 Tournament advancing to the NJCAA National Tourna-ment in St. George, Utah.

Nick Baumert joined the Golden Eagles as the head softball coach in 2006. He earned 2007 Region 18 Coach of the Year his very first season and was voted 2011 Region 18 Coach of Year as well. In 2008, Baumert led CSI to a Region 18 Championship and brought home a 7th-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. The Golden Eagles have cracked the top 10 in the NJCAA National Poll the last four seasons.

CSI has competed in the Region 18 Championship game every year of its existence. In his five years at CSI, Baumert has compiled a 224-106-2 record.

During their five seasons, the Golden Eagles have had eight All-Americans, 11 NFCA All-West selections, four NFCA All-Americans and 11 NJCAA Academic All-Americans. The team has posted a high enough gpa every year to reach Academic All-American team status.

Prior to being hired to start a brand new program at CSI, Baumert coached high school softball.

As the Twin Falls High School varsity coach for seven seasons, Baumert led the Bruins to a 159-46 record. He won the Region III title five times and placed fifth three times at the state tournament.

Throughout his high school coaching career, he coached one high school All-American, six Region III Players of the Year and 29 Region III first team selections. He also helped 12 players continue their softball career at the college level.

Baumert received coach of the year accolades five times for Region III, twice for the Times-News and seven times from the District IV coaches. Most recently, Baumert was named Distinguished Softball Coach of the Year for Idaho in 2006.

Baumert is married to Karen. They have two daughters, Katelynn and Kylie.

Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in 1975 and became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the college include Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs, Dean of Continuing Education/Summer School, Vice President of Instruction, and Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer.

Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in Technical Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed. D. in Adult Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post doctoral at Harvard University Institute for Educational Management.

In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the Twin Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce Development Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board member on many local organizations including Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization, Region IV Development Association and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. He is past president of the Idaho Association of Private Industry Councils.

Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities provided by the college and the support from his family and co-workers.

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007.

Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis.

Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.

Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state

finishes.Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the

University of Idaho in 1986.Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
