Planning a live music concert like the one Ihave coming up this month is a gut-wrenching form ofself torture.

I have a number of longtime musician friendscoming to play Action Magazine’s 40th Anniversary andMusic Extravaganza at Texas Pride Barbecue on Sun-day, April 12. Almost every picker who will take ourstage has been a cover feature in Action Magazine.

Unfortunately, there are hundreds moregreat musicians who will not be a part of the showsimply because of space and time limitations, plusthe fact that I had no way of contacting many ofthem. I wish every single one of them could be onthe big stage at Texas Pride.

Those on the upcoming schedule range in agefrom teenage sensation Victoria Celestine to 80-year-old legend Johnny Bush. Our anniversary show will fea-ture an eclectic mix of Texas music, including the bluesof Jimmy Spacek and Laurabell, and the Hispanic fla-vors of The West Side Horns.

Driven by both Spanish and German music in-fluences, the incomparable Joe King Carrasco will blowthis audience away with a conjunto flavored style of rockand roll never before equaled by a gringo musician. Most people don’t know it, but his real name is JoeTeutsch--as German as is the name Augie Meyers. Andit is no coincidence that Joe King and Augie honed theirchops together in such magical, clandestine, and cut-ting edge Tex-Mex inner sanctums as the Joey LopezZAZ Studios deep in the West Side of San Antonio.

Augie Meyers is an internationally-recog-nized superstar, having toured the world with thehit-producing Sir Douglas Quintet, and more re-cently the Texas Tornados. He won a Grammy withBob Dylan, and his name is gold today on thestreets of San Antonio.

Augie is a close friend. It was at Augie’s oldfarm house in Bulverde that I first met Leon Russell, who was sitting on some rusty old bed springs feedingbread crumbs to a rooster. And it was first through Augiethat I met Doug Sahm, another old friend who would beon our anniversary show if he were alive today.

Augie was at my wedding on 7/7/7, and he willemcee Action Magazine’s 40th Anniversary and Music

Extravaganza. I didn’t ask him to emcee this marathongig. He just told me he was going to do it.

It is also significant to note that some of countrymusic’s true living legends will be on our forthcomingconcert bill. Names like Johnny Bush, Darrell McCall, and Johnny Rodriguez have topped the country musiccharts time and time again. I consider them all friends.

Interestingly, we have two of the three sur-viving members of the late Ray Price’s originalCherokee Cowboys Band on the Action Magazineshow. Johnny Bush was Price’s drummer, McCallwas the bass player, and Willie Nelson was the leadguitar. I wish Willie could be here for the anniversaryshow. I didn’t know how to personally contact him,but I passed the word to some of his closest friendsthat he would certainly be welcome. I am aware thatWillie is now a world renown megastar, and hisschedule must be daunting.

I have always considered Nelson to be thegreatest songwriter who ever lived. He headlined myWorld Championship Menudo Cookoff when I was stillwith the newspaper. When I got fired at the Express andNews in the late 1970s, I crawled on Willie’s tour busand never looked back. And he was the cover feature inthe first issue of Action Magazine on March 1, 1975.

I go way back with all of these guys. Darrell McCall and I were especially close

when he and Mona lived in San Antonio back in the1980s. I hung out at their home a lot, and we now main-tain contact via facebook. The McCalls now live nearBrady in McCullough County where Darrell and Monaboth record on the Heart of Texas record label.

There is a natural tremolo in Darrell’s voice. Iconsider him to be one of the greatest vocalists whoever lived.

My love and admiration for Johnny Bush iswithout bounds. Bush and my late friend Gary Stew-art were true kings of the drinking song, but Bushtook it a lot further than Whisky River, There StandsThe Glass, and Jim, Jack, and Rose.

Along with McCall, I consider Bush one of thecountry’s top singers and songwriters. And I was therewhen a horrible affliction called spasmodic dysphoniashut his soaring tenor voice down to a rasping squeak.

With Dr. Blake Simpson and botox injections inhis throat, John has made a miraculous and gutsycomeback.

And it seems like only yesterday that I wrote thefirst article about Johnny Rodriguez ever printed. I wasstill at the Express and News back there in the 1970swhen Happy Shahan and Texas Ranger Joaquin Jack-son summoned me to a room in the El Tropicano Hotelto meet who they characterized as the “next countrymusic star.”

Shahan and Jackson did all the talking.Johnny didn’t say two words, as he was fresh outof jail where he had been incarcerated for stealinga goat. This made a good hook for the article, andRodriguez swears to this day that, if not for me, no-body in the world would ever have known that hewas a onetime goat thief.

What it really amounted to was Johnnyand some other kids grabbing a goat for a barbe-cue, but the “goat rustler” story took wings, and Ihave been closely connected with Johnny Rodever since. He’s my friend.

Kinky Friedman is another old friend who I con-sider to be a genius in disguise. I trust him, I believe inhim, and his true love for animals is the reason I decidedthat all gate donations at the anniversary concert wouldgo to the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch Kinky founded.

How could I ever forget that momentous daythat Anita Anderson invited me to bring Friedman up forher noon show on KENS-TV, a conservative showwatched intently by the retired military community ofSan Antonio.

Kinky carried his guitar, but little did any-one dream what he would do with it until showhost Anita Anderson invited him to sing a number.

That was when, without warning, he cut loosewith his unforgettable song They Ain’t Making JewsLike Jesus Anymore.

The FCC all but unplugged KENS-TV over thatone, and Kinky and I were never invited back. But hepromises to sing that song one more time at the ActionMagazine 40th Anniversary and Music Extravaganza.

It will all be one hell of a show, folks. Don’tmiss it.

By Sam Kindrick The big show is ap-proaching fast, and ActionMagazine’s 40th Anniver-sary and Music Extrava-ganza promises to beeven bigger than first an-ticipated. The music starts athigh noon on Sunday,April 12, at Texas PrideBarbecue’s big indoor-out-door facility which is lo-cated on Loop 1604 Southin the Adkins area. “This will most defi-nitely be the biggest showever produced at TexasPride Barbecue,” saidTexas Pride owner TonyTalanco. “We have hadsome name performers inthe past, but never alineup of this magnitudefor a single show. Therewill be something for

everyone, and I have nodoubt but that the musicwill continue deep into thenight.” Battling cancer, and stilltrying to recover from a re-cent mini-stroke, the greatFiddling Frenchie Burkewill be on hand for our an-niversary show. This is the word fromRoy Holley, whose KKYXTalk About Texas showhas done a monster job inhelping to promote our an-niversary concert. “Frenchie isn’t able toplay,” Holley said, “but hesays he is having his wifedrive him out to the show.He said to tell you hewouldn’t miss it for any-thing.” For me, personally, thisword on Frenchie is bothhumbling and inspira-tional, for there isn’t a bet-ter person walking thisearth than FiddlingFrenchie Burke. And nogreater showman everlived. All proceeds from theconcert will go to theUtopia Animal RescueRanch in Medina County.Minimum donations of $10will be asked at the gate.Hopefully there will besome who will donatemore, since this is a realbenefit for some homelessdogs and cats who needthe help.

We have musicianscoming from Nashville,Tennessee to West Texas, and the lineup of Texasmusic legends and iconicperformers is enough toboggle the mind. Most allof them have been fea-tured in Action cover arti-cles over the past 40years. Some of the greatestmusicians who ever livedhave stepped up to helpus with this one, includingour anniversary concertemcee Augie Meyers, world renown for his workwith the old Sir DouglasQuintet, currently TheTexas Tornados, variousother groups of his own,and his Grammy Awardwinning performance withBob Dylan. “I remember when youtried to sell me ActionMagazine for $500,” Augielaughs. “I am just glad Ididn’t buy it. You havehelped a lot of musiciansthrough the years.” Coming on stage withMeyers for the upcomingblast will be country musiclegends who includeJohnny Bush, Darrell Mc-Call, and Johnny Ro-driguez. Author, recordingartist, and former guber-natorial and agriculturecommissioner candidateKinky Friedman will be

Crazy D’s plus Tenacious is a bigword, but it isn’t bigenough to fit Dalia De-Moore. Bulldog stubbornwould be more like it.

DeMoore owns twonightclubs and two autorepair shops, and nothinghas been handed her on asilver tray. Her flagship operationis Crazy D’s Saloon atNacogdoches and PerrinBeitel, a live countrymusic venue and bar thatshe has been operatingthe past six years. The auto repair busi-nesses are Dad’s AutoRepair, one at 12903Nacogdoches, and theother at 14311 Toepper-wein. The latest DeMooreacquisition is Krystal’sCocktails on Nacog-doches Road, the oldJerry Dean’s which De-Moore has completely re-modeled and refurbishedinto a gleaming cocktaillounge with big emphasis

on puro elegance. “We are featuringkaraoke three nights aweek at Krystal’s,” De-Moore said, “but this clubwhich I named after mydaughter will have no livecountry music. It’s a cozyparty place, a safe placeto bring a date. Theremight be a solo or musi-cian duo on occasion, butthe full band music will bemaintained at Crazy D’s.” Once married to SanAntonio musician GregDeMoore, who fronted aband called Greg De-Moore and D Most, Daliasaid she helped manageand book her husband’sband, and that this associ-ation resulted in her neverending love for live coun-try music. “Greg has left themusic business for themedical field,” Dalia said,“but we had alwaysdreamed of our own livemusic venue. It just didn’thappen while we were stillmarried.” DeMoore said shenamed Crazy D’s afterherself, explaining with alaugh: “People called mecrazy for taking the busi-ness risks I have taken allmy life. And I guess itmight be true. I fell into theauto repair business withno experience whatso-ever. I drove a Yellow Caband sold Mexican dresseson street corners andworked as a bartender onthe side while getting myfirst nightclub up andgoing. It’s not that I haven’tmade mistakes along the

way, but failure has neverbeen an option.” One of seven kids,Dalia came to San Anto-nio from El Paso with hermother, a pianist andsuper sales lady who wasforced into the work forceas her husband’s healthdeclined. Dalia said herdad passed on, while hermother is 83 and still ingood health. “Mom sold every-thing,” Dalia said. “Elec-trolux and Kirby vacuumcleaners, furniture, andcemetery property. Shedid it all.” Dalia DeMoorebankrolled a friend in theauto repair shop business, then wound up with theshop when the manwalked out without notice. “I didn’t have a clue,”Dalia said. “But I learnedin a hurry. Now we havetwo Dad’s Auto Repairshops which are both suc-cessful operations. Theyare working class friendlyand structured for bothmen and women whomight be a little short ofcash. Customers bringtheir own parts and oil ifthey so choose and wetreat the customers likethey are family. A lot of mywomen customers feelsafer and more comfort-able because the shopsare female owned.” Dalia’s kids are musicmajor Greg DeMoore Jr.,who graduates in Junefrom Texas Lutheran Col-lege in Seguin with plansto become a band direc-tor; Eric DeMoore, a fresh-

man at Judson HighSchool where he is takingvocations courses to ac-quaint herself with the au-tomotive business; and28-year-old daughterKrystal, now a Wendy’sgeneral manager who isgetting her degree soon inbusiness. “My hope is that shewill take over operation ofKrystal’s Cocktails,” Daliasaid. “It’s up to her.” Dalia DeMoore con-fesses a lack of personalmusical talent, but empha-sizes a talent for knowinggood music when shehears it. “I have a band rota-tion at Crazy D’s thatbrings in customers,” shesaid. “I have had Ace InThe Hole, the GeorgeStrait band, and someother solid draws. Bands Ibook must come with afollowing. I don’t care howhigh they might be on themusic charts, if they don’tbring people with themthen I can’t use them.” Fredstock set This year’s AnnualFredstock Music Festivalat San Antonio Collegewill feature music byGranvil Poynter, Ruben V,Jimmy Spacek, Los #3Dinners, and Eddie andThe All Nighters. The free festival andconcert will be May 2 onthe SAC campus in theparking lot at CourtlandPlace and North Main Av-enue. Live music will runfrom noon until 6 p.m.,and visitors will be treated

to booths featuring artsand crafts, and there willbe food trucks and ven-dors. But the annual Fred-stock project is far morethan just a concert andfestival; it is the culmina-tion of a lot of hard workwithin the San AntonioCollege Music BusinessProgram, and a no-chargedemonstration of what theprogram is capable of pro-ducing. Donnie Meals is theSAC faculty Music Busi-ness Program Coordina-tor who serves as thefestival organizer. Says Meals: “Fred-stock is hands-on training. It’s part of the process thatour students will be doingout there in the industry.” He went on to saythat the students behindFredstock will get to per-form music businessroles, from booking thebands and vendors topreparing stage logisticsand creating festival pro-motions. Fredstock is namedfor Fred Weiss, whoheaded the Music Busi-ness Program at SAC formore than 20 years.Weiss, who died in 2008,was a professor in theradio/tv/film program atthe college.Still ‘Restless’

Ron Young says theRon Young-Scott GaleBand is no more, as hehas moved on to form aduo with Patrick Joseph, aformer member of theKrayolas. The duo will be

known as Young andRestless, a name Younghas used in the past. Young says he leftbanjo man Scott Gale andJim Newell and BobOroszi in order to concen-trate more on his own ma-terial than on cover tuneshe found himself playing. “I wish the other guyswell,” Young said, “but Ihad to move on. I want toplay and sing more of myown material.”Gary memorial

A memorial gatheringfor Gary Stebbins washeld last month at the lastof many nightclubs andrestaurants he founded--Texas 46 Restaurant andSaloon in Spring Branch. Gary’s ex-wife andbusiness partner, KathyStebbins, organized thememorial which featuredfood, fellowship, and liveTexas music from a vari-ety of musicians. The place waspacked with Stebbinsfriends and former cus-tomers, including at leastone potential buyer for aplace which has been forsale since Stebbins’ Feb-ruary 20 death. Theproperty includes boththe restaurant and barand the Stebbins homewhich sits directly behindTexas 46. Gary was 66. Disposal of the busi-ness and property isnow in the hands ofKathy Stebbins, andwhen a sale is finalized, you can read about it inAction Magazine

signing books in the audi-ence and belting out un-forgettable anti-racistnumbers from the stagewhich include They Ain’tMaking Jews Like JesusAnymore, and AssholeFrom El Paso. Also on the show willbe Joe King Carrasco, oneof the greatest entertain-ers ever to grace the coverof Action Magazine. Thereis only one Joe King, andyou must hear and seethis guy to believe it all. And then there will beappearances by such SanAntonio greats as GeorgeChambers, Ron Knuth,Jimmy Spacek, DubRobinson and the Drug-store Cowboys, Claude(Butch) Morgan, Randyand Russell Toman, andMartini Club owner andsuper musician WayneHarper. I wanted Action Maga-zine’s 40th party to be agiant gathering of mylongtime musician friendswho have so generouslyagreed to play this show. Ialso wanted this celebra-tion to be both beneficial

and affordable for the loyalreaders and advertiserswho have stuck with Ac-tion Magazine since ourfirst issue on March 1,1975. Other Action Magazinecover musicians sched-uled to play the party in-clude Geronimo Trevino,Bonnie Lang with guitaristMaurice Munter, teenagewonder Victoria Celestine,Hector Saldana and TheKrayolas, and blues belterLaurabell with The WestSide Horns.Mona McCallwill be singing with hus-band Darrell, and possiblyT. Gosney Thornton,Johnny Santos, andBubba and Patsy Brownwill make the lineup. It is definitely going tobe a mad scramble, butwe are going to try to getas many on stage as timepermits. This show could nothappen without the tire-less help I am receivingfrom a bunch of selflessindividuals. When I asked TexasPride owner Tony Talancoearly last winter about

holding an anniversaryshow, he said when andwhat time? Tony is making it allhappen by turning the bigvenue over to us for theApril 12 blowout, and thisincludes the Texas Pridesound system, stage, ta-bles for VIP seating, in-door and outdoor seating, mounted security, andvendor booths. Texas Pride is a family-owned operation with aspecial vibe which someof the other area musichippodromes seem tohave lost through theyears. Tony Talanco hasworked shoulder to shoul-der with wife Joni to buildTexas Pride into theunique barbecue eateryand live music centerwhich it is today. And itwas only natural that theirdaughter Tara would de-velop into the sharp, savvy, and youthful TexasPride manager that youwill now find running theoperation. Texas Pride out onsoutheast Loop 1604 has

literally become a destina-tion point. It is a small cityunder the lofty outdoorroof which shades the bigpavilion and toweringstage area. There are giftshops, a spacious chil-drens playground, an-tiques, a tattoo parlor, andeven a clothing boutiquefor the perusal of nativesand tourists who comefrom far and wide. If we pull this show offas planned, I will be thank-ing people for the rest ofmy life, but there are somewho need thanking evenbefore the first downbeatof the concert. People like GeorgeChambers, Randy Toman,Dub Robinson, Urban Ur-bano, Ron Knuth, andAugie. Chambers is a legendin these parts, havingbacked everyone fromLoretta Lynn to Willie andmost of the big countrynames on this show. And the first order of busi-ness when we startedplanning this concert wasto enlist the help of

Chambers. With Ron Knuth, ourfiddling and songwritingfriend who has alsoworked with the biggestcountry stars in the busi-ness, Chambers agreedto put the band togetherwhich would kick the an-niversary blast off with allthe needed pieces. Urban Urbano calledup to play drums and do-nate his entire drum kit forthe use of every band whotakes the stage. Randy Toman of theToman Brothers Band of-fered to play bass behindanyone who might needhim from open to close. And Toman and Dub

Robinson of the DrugStore Cowboys indicatedthat a possible reunion ofthe original DrugstoreCowboys Band might ma-terialize on the anniver-sary stage. That would be Dub,Randy, and drummerRobert (Cotton) Payne, who will be playing a gig inSeguin with Bill Andersonthe day of our show. “It’s possible that wemay have Cotton over atTexas Pride before thenight is over,” Dub said. “A1970s Drugstore Cow-boys reunion would be re-ally cool.” I didn’t ask Augie toemcee the show. He just

told me he was going todo it. Friends like Augieare better than gold bricksin the bank. And I can’t overlook thesupport from Hector Sal-dana and his Krayolas. Iwas at thier first gig whenall of them wereteenagers, and I havewatched Hector also de-velop into a talented musicand general assignmentsreporter for the Expressand News. Then there are the peo-ple who help me produceAction Magazine on amonthly basis. My wife Sharon is theeditorial assistant whouses her academic skills

as a longtime elementaryschool teacher to proofeverything that goes intothe magazine, and no bet-ter proof reader ever ex-isted. Elise Taquino, our rel-atively new graphics de-sign artist, has takenAction Magazine to a newlevel of eye-catching ex-cellence. Her extraordi-nary talents may beviewed on the cover of thisissue of Action. Not visibleis her work ethic. She isfaster than jugged light-ning on a computer, andshe builds advertisementswith imagination and pin-point accuracy. Ronnie Reed has been

our circulation man formany years, and I havemanaged to do most ofthe rest--from writing arti-cles, shooting photo-graphs, and cleaning outthe toilet bowls. I have been a dog lover

since childhood, and mydecision to turn all gateproceeds for the concertover to an animal rescueoutfit was a no-brainer. Kinky Friedmanfounded the Utopia Animal
