JgHt-'l>ecaune I advertised for Bale some things I do not need, some people ask that question. Don't you worry about it. I am get- ting ready to do THE BEST MEAT BUSINESS ever done in Lowell. BURGLAR IN TOWN EVAPORATOR CLOSEB WOMEN IN FRANK WHITE S HOUSE N. Held at Revolver's Point. "All's Well That Bads Well." The rcHidence of F. N. White was entered by a burglar Sunday morning and Hcveral ol lliu inmates threatened with a revolver; but nothing was lost and no one was hurt. At 3 o'clock a. m., Sunday, Mrs. Colling atid Mrs. .Sherwood, guests of the Whites and occupying a room on the ground floor, were awakened by H Mne one moving about in the adjominu mom Thinking it was Mrs. White, Frank N's. aged moth- er, and that she might be sick, one of them proposed to get up and go to her aid; but a man appeared in the curtained doorway and leveling a revolver at them commanded silence; as he had already throaieued the old lady, who had meekly com- plied. The younger women, however, with a revolver pointing at them screamed: "Frank White come down here, there's a' man in the house." They were answered from all parts of the hotiHe; and when the alarmed members arrived on the scene, an open window and three frightened women were the total results of the excitement. Two watches lay on the bureau and several considerable sums of money were in the house; but noth- ing has been missed. The burglar is described as tall and slim,' his face covered by a hand- kerchief. He left the tracks of No. 8 shoes in the soft dirt of the re- cently graded lawn, which haJ a peculiar indention in the ball, such as might be made by the grippers worn by ball players and sprint- ers. Otherwise no clue to the per- petrator is known. Mr. White tells a good joke on himself in connection with the alfair. Mr. and Mrs. VVhite>had given up their bed room to their-guests and taken one up stairs. When the alarm was given, our supervisor got to his feet in a dazed condition, and forgetting that he was upstairs, be- gan feeling around in the dark for a way UP stairs, where he thought the disturbance was. So, while Mrs. White got down stairs in time to sec the burglar scooting out of the window, her partner did not ar- rive on the scene until the danger was all over. Thinking of "How Betty and 1 Killed the Bear," Frank now occas- ionally remarks to his wife; "My, didn't we kill a big one!" PROPRIETOR HATCH UN ABLE T O G E T H A R D C O A L . m Congnssaan Wm. In addition to above, we can fur -nish at reduced prices to our patrons almost any paper or magazine published. We arc money out of pocket on each and ever}' proposi-t ion; we accept subscriptions for these outside papers, do the work for nothing, simply to accommodate our subscribers.

FIRST, find out what the trusts want done. Then do the other thing.

Axi) Morgan Co. don ' t like Teddy. Well, well! First thing you know the whole job lot of us will be hurrahing for Roosevelt.

THE report that Money Bags Morgan refuses to contribute to the New York Kepublicah campaign fund because be dislikes President Roosevelt, ought to be worth thous-ands of votes for Teddy.

CAN you wonder at the prejudice against foot ball, as played, when such items as follows are of frequent occurence in the press?

Benton Harbor , Mich., Oct. 20—Daring a lierc-e footliall game yesterday between the "Li l l le Rocks" and the "Dir ty Dozen" young Claude Oram ' s ear was bitten off in a light which ensued over |>osi>ession of a ball.

, L O C A L papers throughout the county are stopping the custom of clubbing with outside newspapers. I t is a losing game for the country editor, who does the work and runs the risk for nothing. However, we like to accommodate our subscribers; and for this reason alone, continue for the present the clubbing arrange-ments mentioned elsewhere in this paper.

TUB coal operators are said to be planning to recoup their losses on account of the strike by advancing the price of coal 50 cents per ton. I t is estimated that this would be a tax of !j;'.'5,00u,000 on the consumers. Inasmuch as the losses were the direct result of the coal barons' own meanness and stubbornness, they should be made to bear the burden themselves instead of saddling it upon the people, who were in no sense to blame.

O K T H E 0 4 8 , 7 4 3 immigrants to the United States last year, 102,182 could not read or write. Here is an army of ignoramuses to offset the votes of intelligent citizcns, who have been twenty-one years in mak-ing. The reading test for the ad-mission of foreigners, as proposed at the last session of Congress, would shut out this Hood of igno-rance, and the average intelligence of the nation would increase more rapidly. If an educational qualifi-cation were then required of our voters, the intellect of the country wonld have a better chance to make itself icit in legislative matters.

E V B B T paper now has a list of hunt ing accidents. There are BO many tools loose in the woods with guns tha t it is actually safer to go to war than to go gunning for game.

R I P P K R I S M , boodleismand bossism are receiving some hard blows in-dependently of party lines. In De-troit, the Republican city committee has thrown out the entire vote of the second precinct in its primary elec-tion, on account of wholesale frauds on the part of their own henchmen. The people are waking up to the necessity for public decency; and there is hope for the future.

T H E I J O W B L L Manufacturing company, which on account of its stinginess, could not get help here and moved to Grand Rapids, has a strike on its hands there on account of a cut in wages. When they were here, they laid their difficulties to Lowell and said that they would be all r ight in Grand Rapids. W e are of the opinion tha t they are of the kind that take their troubles with them wherever they go. Small potatoes and few in the hill.

F I F T H district voters do not need to lie awake worrying over the re-sult of the Congressional contest. Mr. Smith and Mr, Walker are both good men and t rue ; and either would represent the distr ict with ability. Every citizen is f ree to vote for the man who best represents the voter's principles; and can do so knowing that he will be represented by an honest and good man in either case.

m 9 m The Rev. G. W. J e n n i n g s of Pontiac

rapped local coal dea lers f rom the pulpit and said soil coal should be sold to t he poor there a t $ 3 75 a t o n . T h e doalers branded the preacher 's sUtemenls aa false and the m i n u t e r now offers to give 20 tons of coal to t he poor if the dealers can prove what they say.—[Evening News.

W E K N O W the Rev. George Washington of old and opine that the Pontiac diamond dealers might better fool with a buzz saw. No matter how high they throw him, he will strike on his feet, every time. Long may he live to fight the battles of the poor and needy.

THE Tenth's Companion, a notice of which id given elsewhere in this paper, is without doubt the best journal publiabed for children and young people, a t the same time con-taining matter of interest to every member of the family. The invar-iable price of the Companion is $1.75 per year; but we can furnish it with T H E L E D G E R to people who are not now taking the Companion at $2.25 for both papers. The Companion makes no clubbing rate whatever for its old subscribers.

W A S H I N G T O N G A R D K SR says there are trusts in f ree trade England, and therefore the tariff in the United States has no bearing on the t rust issue. But Senator Beve-ridge says the t rusts are vastly worse in tbis country; and T H A T

DOES bear on the case. The trusts are so harmless in free trade Eng-land. where they are obliged to com-pete with all the world, that onr English brothers cannot understand what we are howling about in Amer-ica. Let England protect her trusts with a high tariff to shut out all out-side competition, and she will find out k ,what '8the matter with Hanna."

IN THE coal slrike contest. Presi-dent Bacr of the coal combine, has not kept within shooting distance of President Mitchell of the Miner's union, either in ability or gentle-manly behavior. In capacity for insulting his betters, and in the ut ter disregard of human rights, however, he is without an equal. To these must be added treachery; because only a l i t t le while ago, Baer was a labor agitator himself. Tru ly , Mr. Baer is 'Least in war, least in peace aud least in the hearts of his countrymen. '

N o MAN knows what a choice lot of enemies a conscientious news-

per man can make until he has ad experience in the business. If

a man is known by his enemies; much more should the test be ap-plied to a newspaper. If its conduct is such as to incur the enmity of thugs, law-breakers, criminals and immoral people generally, it is doing i ts duty and should have the loyal support of every good citizen. This is as true as preaching. I t is also true, that the paper which is con-ducted in such a manner as to rally to its support the classes named, has failed in its duty to the public, aud should be dealt with according-ly. "By their f ru i ts , ye shall know them." ^

Won by Formet lu Court Hicks Last Friday.

Justice Hicks ' office was busy last Friday with a suit for trespass brought by Mrs. Carrie Cooper against John Wilson. A judge-ment of $5 and costs was awarded theplaintifT, whose < ase was handled by Attorney Mathewson.

The trouble was over the removal of some cattle from Mrs. Cooper's premises. Wilson claiming to have purchased the animals. Mrs. Coop-er claimed to have refused the tend-ered money and that there was no sale; and ordered Wilson off the premises. He went but took the cattle.

Afterward the lady was off-jred $5 more for the cattle, than was left on Mrs. Cooper's fence by Wilson. So the $5 judgment covers the difference in price and Wilson retains the cattle; but both parties are out their attorney fees.

A THUNDER-STORM.

T h e pulse of day since noon has beat At fever heat ,

The swooning winds are dead, and still, Man has no wiil

To move, except compelled by toil; For burning soil

Blisters the feel tha t on it tread, While overhead

The sun pours down Us fiery tide; The oottie hide

In th ickets deep, with rolling eyes; The varied cries

Of birds t ha t fly upon the wing. And creeping thing,

Are hushed, as if with boding f ea r ; F o r on the ear

The roll of heaven's drums, tha t beat Whenever meet

The s to rm clouds, breaks with solemn tone» Through valley moar.s

The gale tha t rushes f r o m above; The tree-tops move,

The wind, long dead, ha s leaped to life, To Join tho s t r i fe

Of e lements ; the hireing rain Sweeps o 'er the plain

And b r e a k s upon the mounta in ' s brow. Before It bow

The giant trees, as If bu t reeds Or ear thborn weeds.

But suddenly ns tempest came, With lightning flame.

And heaven's war d rum rolling roar ; Again ' t is o'er.

The sun comes out with blinding glare ; And yet the air

H a s something lost of burning heat . And bird songs greet

The world, all freshly washed, and sweet. —John K. Hurlbut , In Springfield (Muss.)

Deadly LaGrippe Caused

Heart Trouble,

Nervous Prostration and Dyspeps ia .

My Friends Know Heart Cure Cured Me.

Mrs. C. 0 . l lurd. 118 W. Third St., Musca-tine, la^ is well known throughout her section of Iowa as an ardent worker in the M. E. Church. She says: "LaGrippe left mc with a severe case of nervous depression and nervous dyspepsia, which soon affected my heart. I suffered from sleeplessness, head-ache, extreme nervousness and twitching of the muscles. The siightest exertion would cause shortness of breath, a numbness of my body and hot flashes w th pain. I will tell you what I am constantly telling my friends —that Dr. Mil s' Heart Cure cured me so that all these disagreeable symptoms le!t me. I may add that for severe pain I have never found anything to equal Dr. Miles' Anti-Pain Pills and think the Nerve and Liver Pills are a wonderful stomach remedy."

"Our son was stricken down with heart trouble in his twentieth year. For two months we got no sleep with him at night, so we commenced to use Dr. Miles' Hear t Cure and Nervine with the Nerve and Liver Pills and today he U sound and well. In fact he passed a physical examination since his sickness and is with the Army in the Philippines. I desire to add that Dr. Miles' Anti-Pain Pills have certainly been a boon to me. I am frequently troubled with sick and nervous headaches and I have never found anything that would relieve me so q'l ckly and le ive me feeling so well there-after."—Mrs. Alice Moad, Buffalo, Mo.
