T HE E DIFIER Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and the things wherewith one may edify another (Rom. 14:19) Walnut Street Church of Christ Volume 50 August 30, 2020 Number 34 Word at Walnut Street Bryan McAlister The One of the most educated men of his day and time made the strong proclamation, “that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead” Philippians 3:10-11).” Of all that could be learned, gained, or processed in one’s heart and mind, the greatest pursuit of any heart can be for the heart to seek Jesus and His way of life and living. What have you changed you needed to? What have you not changed that you need to? Why? Since we believe in Jesus, we are called to be in this world and not of this world. Our knowledge and the base of our knowledge, must be different in every way possible. My prayer is that people would believe Jesus can help answer the questions of their life. If they have emotional questions (the heavy burden of pain, heartache, guilt, regrets, and disappointments) Jesus is able to understand our hearts. If they have intellectual questions (Could He have existed, did He exist, and if He did, was He really God’s Son?), He has enough evidence to overwhelmingly prove His deity. If they have theological questions (Does it matter how I am saved...how I worship, and how or if I serve?) Jesus is able to answer these questions. If they have personal questions, (can He forgive, will He forgive, does He want to forgive me?”) then I want them to know Jesus. I want them to know Jesus can heal the broken things of all this world. Jesus said, “I am no thief” (John 10:8), but the people wanted a thief (a thug named Barabbas) released instead of Jesus (John 18:40). Jesus said, “I will set you free” (John 8:36), but the people wanted a prisoner, just like they were prisoners (John 18:39). Jesus said, “I am the king” (John 18:37), but the people said “We have no king but Caesar” (John 19:15)!” Jesus was asked by Pilate, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me” (John 18:33ff)? Their exchange went on for a bit, until finally, Pilate just asked again, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice” (John 18:37). The image is conjured in my mind, that while Pilate was speaking to Jesus, and while Pilate was questioning Jesus, Pilate finally asked Jesus, “What is truth?” and while Pilate turns to go back to the people, Jesus is left standing there, and in His mind He goes back to the moment when many believed in Him, and He began telling them, everything they needed to know in order to change their lives. It’s like a flashback, and all at once, Jesus in His mind is transported back in time about a year. He hadn’t been beaten, He hadn’t been arrested, He hadn’t been tortured. He had actually been believed. When I picture Jesus in the moments of navigating the time of His mockery of a trial, I seem Him reflecting to the times in His ministry when those who heard Him, believed. They were convicted in their hearts His knowledge was enough. They believed in the freedom of Jesus, the forgiveness of Jesus, and that life was now worth following Jesus. In a world where every man is their own source of knowledge, turn your heart, soul, mind, and life upon Jesus and His knowledge and let the world see Him. Who is my neighbor? Because of your generosity, we were able to deliver care packages like the one pictured above to several area elementary schools. Each box contained hand sanitizer, hand soap and empty spray bottles. Thank you!

One of the most educated men of his day and time made the strong proclamation, “that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead” Philippians 3:10-11).” Of all that could be learned, gained, or processed in one’s heart and mind, the greatest pursuit of any heart can be for the heart to seek Jesus and His way of life and living.

The image is conjured in my mind, that while Pilate was speaking to Jesus, and while Pilate was questioning Jesus, Pilate finally asked Jesus, “What is truth?” and while Pilate turns to go back to the people, Jesus is left standing there, and in His mind He goes back to the moment when many believed in Him, and He began telling them, everything they needed to know in

order to change their lives.

Because of your generosity, we were able to deliver care packages like the one pictured above to several area

elementary schools. Each box contained hand sanitizer, hand soap and empty spray bottles.

Thank you!

Notes of Thanks: The simple words “thank you” are not enough to express the overwhelming amount of love, food, prayers, cards, donations and support that has been shown to our family during this time of loss. We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers as

we try to figure out the next steps of our lives.

Dear Walnut Street Family,

One of the ladies in the mission house recently transitioned to an apartment after working hard to obtain a job, a license, a car and finally an apartment for her and her young son, but it was an empty apartment. Due to your overwhelming generosity, it is no longer empty. Thank you for demonstrating the love of Christ in a way she

will never forget. Sherman Cline, Golden Deeds Ministry

Dear Church Family,

My family and I would like to thank you for your encouragement and support as we passed through the seasons of life during a pandemic. Your response to Christy’s “drive-by” wedding shower was so wonderful and fun! Your kindness related to Norman’s hip replacement were humbling to both of us. Your sweet words following my mother’s passing continue to be comforting and

appreciated. Janice Lampley
