January 7, 2018 THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD January 7, 2018 EPIPHANY People can come into our lives, sometimes for a very short time, and make a big impression. The power of the encounter can change our life, renew our hope, or strengthen our resolve. It can even set us on a new course, leading us to places, causes and people we never imagined meeting. The Magi, or astrologers as Matthew calls them, arrive to pay homage to the newborn Jesus. A star had guided them on their quest and when they left, they avoided Herod and went on their way. Their gifts represented the kingship of Christ (gold), His divinity (incense) and his redemptive suffering (myrrh). The story of the Magi reminds us that the whole world has come to recognize and worship a Savior, and the impact of this short visit would reverberate through the ages. Like the Magi, our life is a journey of faith. We encounter Christ in hundreds of ways. Each momentary encounter has the potential of changing lives, healing wounds, easing suffering and restoring faith. Those we meet along the way are fellow pilgrims who also search for grace and life. Follow the star of faith and offer your gifts of love. Christ will surely lead you. James Gaffney Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/)

“St. Luke’s donates 10% of its weekly collection through Sharing First . We donate to others be-fore attending to our own wants. Sharing First is unique not only because there is one

collection each week, but that we help the needy first. Please adjust your donation to include both Sharing First and St. Luke’s. Thank you for your generous support.

DECEMBER 17, 2017 supports ST. DAMIEN’S PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL IN HAITI in the amount of $1568 DECEMBER 24, 2017 supports DISMAS in the amount of $1568 DECEMBER 31, 2017 supports JEREMIAH’S INN in the amount of JANUARY 7 supports VISITATION HOUSE (TODAY) JANUARY 14 supports WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? When I think about the work we do in the Outreach Office at St. Luke's, I recall the practices of charity known as the Corporal Works of Mercy that Christ described in Matthew 25:34. They are: Feed the Hungry, Clothe the Naked, Shelter the Homeless, Visit the Sick & Imprisoned, Bury the Dead and Give Alms to the Poor.

Every day, our parishioners and neighbors come to St Luke's asking for help because they know we care...they know that we will not turn them away or judge them. We are here to lift their burden...to ease their pain and worry. It becomes so clear that every day, God works through us to do His work. He counts on us to be his instruments...to be His messengers. Often, we see people leave with tears in their eyes because they cannot believe that their prayers have been answered, and they ask how they can pay us back. The answer is always the same, "pay it forward...by helping someone else in need". That is what Jesus would want us to do.

ST. LUKE THE EVANGELIST CHURCH IS OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, WE CAN MAKE A VISIT ANYTIME WE PASS.

JESUS WILL BE AS HAPPY TO SEE US AS WE ARE TO SEE HIM.

EPIPHANY CONCERT There will be an Epiphany Con-cert in the church at 4 pm on January 7th. We’ll be celebrat-ing Christmas and also arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethle-hem.
