CIRCULATION AND READERSHIP PROFILE

The International Journal on Hydropower &Dams is read in more than 180 countries;

more than 3000 copies of each editionare distributed after publication. Copies aregiven to all delegates at the major interna-tional and regional conferences organized byAqua-Media (1500 copies at the Europe-basedevent, and about 600-700 at regional events).

Aqua-Media International is a member of theAudit Bureau of Circulation (ABC). BetweenAugust and December 2013, an average of3108 copies of each issue of The InternationalJournal on Hydropower & Dams were sent outby post. Copies were circulated in more than185 countries. (The next audit will cover thesix issues distributed in 2014.)

The ABC ‘headline’ figure excludes extrabulk distribution at 7-10 other importantindustry events each year. For example, during 2014, copies went to: ICOLD’s82nd Annual Meeting (Bali, Indonesia;900 copies); HydroVision (Nashville, USA;800 copies); Hidroenergia (Istanbul,Turkey; 200 copies); the InternationalTidal Energy Summit (London, UK); and,the International Convention for MarineRenewable Energy (Cherbourg, France;200 copies); the British Hydropower Association’s summer forum (Cardiff, UK;150 copies) and 13th annual conference(Glasgow, UK; 100 copies ); and, theBritish Dam Society 18th Biennial Conference (Belfast, UK; 120 copies).

The largest categories of reader are:(1) developers, owners, managers and operators;and (2) engineers and consultants. Others canbe seen in the pie-chart below.

We ensure that the journal reaches the mainwater and power utilities or governmentdepartments (ministries of water and energy)in all countries with dams and hydro plants, particularly those with active developmentprogrammes under way.

Readership surveys have demonstrated thateach copy of the journal is read by 8 to 10readers on average, because many organizationscirculate the journal internally. Surveysindicate that Hydropower & Dams is regardedas the most widely read (and retained) technicaland business journal in this market, as a resultof the mix of high-level technical content, andbusiness and policy coverage. Organizations retain their copies as a source ofreference, and if they find a copy has gonemissing, they often purchase a back-issue tocomplete their set.

We print a minimum of 4000 copies of eachjournal, and 4500 at times where a largebulk distribution is required for an event. We retain about 100 copies for future sales.A significant investment has been made overthe past two years in increasing the circulationin less-developed countries, where there isa strong need for technical and business information, in view of the major schemesmoving ahead and being planned. Thisinvolves regularly reviewing the list of thosebeing sent the journal, to ensure we arereaching the most appropriate people.

Our circulation is composed of the following main categories:1. Subscriber copies (companies or individuals with paid annual subscriptions).2. Controlled circulation complimentary copies, principally in the less developed and developing countries. Most are requested, but we select some additional recipients, eg, key decision-makers and organizations in less-developed countries with active hydro/water resources development programmes.3. Non-controlled free circulation (eg, organizations and individuals who have attended our conferences, and other appropriate national or international organizations).4. Extra bulk distribution (at selected major conferences or other relevant industry events, where international developers and consultants are present).

CONFERENCES AND EXHIBITIONSThe major event of the year in the diary of allthose involved in hydropower policy, planning, development, operation, maintenance or refurbishment, is the annual HYDRO conferencehosted by Aqua~Media in Europe, organized in collaboration with the national utility of thehost country. These take place in carefullyselected European cities, easily accessible fromall parts of the world.

Working with an International Steering Committee of eminent experts, and officers ofsome professional associations such as ICOLDand IEA, the H&D team puts together a programme for three days of presentations, panel discussions.

Four tracks of sessions cover technical, environmental/social and financial andcontractual issues.

A major Technical Exhibition runs alongside theConference, where all companies active in thehydro industry have the opportunity to showcase their products and services, bringingtheir expertise to the attention of key decision-makers in more than 80 countries.

Plenty of additional informal networking opportunities are provided, during refreshment breaks and social events, for inter-action with potential clients. Feedbackindicates that valuable new contacts are made.

Aqua~Media also organizes biennial regionalevents in Asia and Africa covering hydropowerand multipurpose water storage schemes. International experts meet to focus on issuesof specific relevance to the region. Asian eventshave taken place in Thailand, Vietnam,Malaysia and Sri Lanka, with the next plannedto be held in Lao PDR.

The first African event, co-hosted with ICOLDand EEPCo, was held in Ethiopia in 2013, incollaboration with the African Union and UNECA.

The Aqua~Media events represent a uniquesetting to learn of business opportunitiesthroughout the world.

An analysis of delegates who have attendedour annual international conferences and exhibitions over the past five years reveals thatsince HYDRO 2009 in Lyon, an average of 1400delegates have attended each year.

In total since 2009, 124 countries have takenpart, with an average of 82 delegations per year. The number of attendees (both

delegates and speakers) from Africa, Asia andLatin America has steadily increased, reflecting the hydro potential and development activity under way, and the focuson these regions in the programme.

The regional events (in Asia and Africa) attractabout 700 participants from more than 45countries. These events provide an ideal forum

for networking with key decision makers inthe parts of the world where many of theworld’s most significant hydro and dam projects of the next decades will be constructed.

More than 30 per cent of participants at the annual events taking place in Europerepresent ministries, utilities or private developers of hydro plants. About 20 per centare consultants, another 25 per cent are suppliers, and others are civil contractors, financiers, academics and students.

The major IFIs and regional developmentbanks regularly participate, including theWorld Bank, IFC, Asian and African Development Banks, the European InvestmentBank, EBRD, KfW and others.

The main hydro developing countries of theworld are regular participants.

There is no other event in the world, specifically focusing on hydropower, which attracts such international participation.

20152015

The international hydropower community will return to France next year, for HYDRO 2015. With world hydro capacity now standing at around 1060 GW, almost 200 GW under construction, and at least a further 400 GW likely to goahead within 5-10 years, the multiple benefits of this renewable resource are clearly more widely appreciated.

Topics for HYDRO 2015 will include: progress and challenges for large regional schemes in developing countries, the importance of multipurpose developments, the role of mini hydro, ensuring the safety of water infrastructure,

and maximizing the benefits of existing powerplants by timely refurbishment and upgrading.
