Ductile Iron: breaking new ground
in directional drilling & pipe bursting
Innovation without limits
Offering innovative solutions to the utility, construction and housingsectors, Saint-Gobain Pipelines forms a part of the global Saint-GobainGroup. Saint-Gobain Pipelines is able to draw on the vast R&D andworld wide production capabilities of the group to provide innovativeand cost-effective solutions to the market. At Saint-Gobain Pipelinesinvestment in innovative technology is paramount, without this thecompany would be unable to offer the new and improved products and services which are at the very foundations of its business.
PAM Directional is one such product brought to market thanks to theextensive experience and expertise of the worldwide Saint-GobainPipelines team. A simple and effective ductile iron solution to situationswhere open cut trenches are not suitable or possible.
Range overview & technical detail
For further details on the dimensions of the pipes see the Productinformation section.
Experience
These pipes have been used in numerous projects across Europe overthe last 10 years. There have been no experiences of joint or pipelinefailure. The maximum length carried out to date has been 1,500m usinga DN150. The longest project in a larger bore currently stands at 1,100mof DN600 PAM Directional pipe. Further details about the projectscarried out are available, including some case studies.
Application PAM Directional – Saint-Gobain Pipelines ductileiron directional drilling and pipe bursting pipes – canbe used for both water and sewer applications.
Diameter range DN100 – 700Joint Self-anchored pushfit. Double chambered socket.
(See also section on Joints.)Gasket Tyton or Rapid gasketCoating 200g/m2 zinc plus 5mm cement (ZM-U).
A highly robust & rigorously tested protectivecoating, suitable for all drilling & soil conditions(e.g. rocks, aggressive soil, etc). In no circumstancesis further protection required.
Lining Sewer (EN 598) – Alumina cementWater (EN 545) – Blast furnace cementThe water pipe is approved for use with potablewater by the Secretary of State for theEnvironment, Transport and the Regions inaccordance with Regulation 31 of the Water Supply(Water Quality) Regulations 2000.See Saint-Gobain Pipelines website for InstructionsFor Use.www.saint-gobain-pipelines.co.uk/alldownload.cfm

new ground
Joints
PAM Directional is assembled by way of a simple anchored push fitjointing system. The double chambered socket allows for use of a lockingring which acts as both an anchorage point to enable the pipe to bepulled through the required drilling channel and a thrust restraint for thepipeline. This joint is protected from abrasive conditions with the use of arubber protective collar and a metal sheet cone.
• Easy to install
• Robust and durable
• Safe and secure
• Effective in all conditions
drilling & pipe bursting
Tooling required for completing the joint includes jointing tackle as pernormal ductile iron pipe, a locking ring insertion tool, spacer, and a hammerfor securing the metal sheet.
The jointing process can be carried out in a confined area during the pullingof the pipe through the drilling channel, if space is available it is alsopossible to lay out and joint the whole pipeline before pulling into thedrilling channel.
PAM Directional pipes can be jointed as normal with PAM Natural and PAM Integral pipes and fittings.
For details on the angular deflection of the joints and the radius of thedrilling channel, see the Product information section.

To joint a PAM Directional pipe:
1 Ensure that the rubber protective collar is on the spigot end of pipe to be jointed (pulled back slightly from the joint) and that the metalsheet is fitted via the spigot end of the jointing pipe and pulledadjacent to the socket.
2 Place the rubber gasket into the receiving socket (as per normalductile iron pipe installation).
3 Place the locking ring in 2nd chamber (nearest to socket face) of thereceiving socket using the insertion tool.
4 Hold the locking ring open using the spacer and push the spigot endof pipe into the socket.
5 Cover the joint with the rubber protective collar.
6 Position the metal sheet over the rubber protective collar.
7 Hammer the metal sheet at the edges to ensure it remains in place.
8 The pipe is ready to be pulled into the drilling channel.

Installation calculations & technical support
Saint-Gobain have developed a tool that will calculate the exact pullingforces required on a specific project and will also make weight and liftcalculations to ensure that the pipe is correctly balanced in the drillingchannel. This tool will ensure optimal installation.Project information required for these calculations:
• Diameter of pipe intended for use• Length of project• Application
The calculation tool assumes the use of 1.3kg/L density of bentonite as standard.
The drilling channel is required to be 1.3 times the outside diameterof the socket of the pipe. The minimum drilling channel required foreach diameter is shown in the product information tables at the backof this leaflet.
On a 6m long pipe with a deflection of 3 degrees, the maximum jointoffset of each pipe can be 314mm. Therefore the minimum radiusachievable on 3 degrees of deflection will be 115m.
On a 6m long pipe with a deflection of 2 degrees, the maximum jointoffset of each pipe can be 209mm. Therefore the minimum radiusachievable on 2 degrees of deflection will be 172m.
In comparison with other materials no additional site equipment(drilling rig etc) is required for directionally drilling with ductile iron pipe.Ductile iron specific pulling heads are available to order with the pipe.
Full technical support is available from an experienced team of engineers, either by telephone or where required, through visits to site.
Benefits of ductile iron for directional drilling & pipe bursting
The table below highlights the advantages using ductile iron in a directionaldrilling application over the current industry-preferred material, PE.
The maximum length ofa ductile iron project thathas been carried out bySaint-Gobain Pipelines to date is 1,500m usingDN150. The longest projectin a larger bore currentlystands at 1,100m of DN600PAM Directional pipe.

Safety factors High (2.5) As low as 1.2 Low safety factors in plastics mean that expensive and additionalexternal support or protection may be needed to minimise risk of failure.

Joints Anchored Coil for small Ductile iron can be jointed during the pulling of the pipe,push-fit diameters and welded reducing stop/start strain on both pipe and machinery and
for larger diameters allowing the contractor to work in a small amount of space.
