Chanakya was an adviser to the Mauryan Emperor Chandragupta, andwas the chief architect of his rise to power. Kautilya and Vishnugupta, the namesby which the ancient Indian political treatise, called the “Arthashastra” identifiesits author, are traditionally identified with Chanakya. Chanakya has beenconsidered as the pioneer in the field of economics and political science. In theWestern world, he has been referred to as the Indian Machiavelli, althoughChanakya’s works predate Machiavelli’s by about 1,800 years. Chanakya wasteacher in Taxila, an ancient centre of learning and was responsible for the creationof Mauryan empire, the first of its kind on the Indian subcontinent. His workswere lost near the end of the Gupta dynasty and were not rediscovered until 1915.He was a master of the shrewd act of diplomacy. He believed in four ways –Sama, Dana, Danda, Bheda (treating with Equality, Enticement, Punishment orWar and Sowing Dissension).

Gautam Buddha was a spiritual teacher in ancient India, who foundedBuddhism. He is also called the Tathagata [he, who has come thus], Bhagavat[the Loard], and Sugata [well-gone]. The story of his life is overlaid with legends.

Ashoka, popularly known as Ashoka the Great, was an emperor of theMauryan Dynasty who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent. One of India‘sgreatest emperors, Ashoka reigned over most of present-day India, after a numberof military conquests. His empire stretched from present-day Pakistan andAfghanistan in the west, to the present-day Bangladesh and the state of Assam inthe east, and as far south as northern Kerala and Andhra. He conquered thekingdom of kalinga, which no one in his dynasty had conquered. He embracedBuddhism. One of the tallest figures, among the first generation of modern freedomfighters. He was the most outstanding leader among the extremist congressmen.Bal Gangadhar Tilak later came to be known as “Lokmanya Tilak”. He playeda leading part in popularising the culture of patriotism. He stared two newspa-pers, The Maratha in English and The Kesari in Marathi. He was the first con-gress leader to suffer several terms of imprisonment. He organized the GanapatiFestival and the Shivaji Festival. A great fighter, both in political and socialfields, he played an important role in the Renaissance Movement. He devoted hisentire life to the service of the country. He made excellent use of his great flair forjournalism to mould public opinion in favour of his political aims and objectives.Tilak left the Indian National Congress in Surat session, held in 1907 and laterorganized his own party of extremists, in collaboration with Lala Lajpat Rai andBipin Chandra Pal. Tilak, while in Mandalay prison, wrote his famous book“Gita Rahasya”. He also established the Home Rule League in Bombay. The Brit-ish rulers called him the “Leader of the Indian Unrest” and the Indians hailedhim as “the Prince of Patriots”.

Pherozeshah Mehta was a political leader, activist and a leading lawyer,who was knighted by the then British Government in India for his service to law.His political ideology was, as was the case with most of the Indian leaders of histime, moderate and was hence not directly opposed to the crown‘s sovereignty,but only demanded more autonomy for Indians to Self-rule. HBPL BiographiesThe “Grand Old Man of India”, Dadabhai Naoroji was a great

nationalist. He established the “East India Association” in England to serve as aforum for the ventilation of grievances, against the exploitation by BritishGovernment. He, in his book, “Poverty and Un-British Rule in India”, exposedthat poverty and economic backwardness of India were not inherent in localconditions, but were caused by colonial rule, which was draining India of itswealth and capital. Dadabhai Naoroji, a great leader of Indian national movement,was the first Indian to become a Member of the House of the Commons, on theLiberal party’s ticket, where he fervently pleaded the cause of his country. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the pre-eminent political andspiritual leader of our country, during the Indian independence movement. Vallabhbhai Patel (31st October 1875 – 15th December 1950) was a greatpolitical and social leader of India, who played a major role in the country’sstruggle for independence and guided its integration into a united, independentnation. Syed, M.H.Sheikh Abdullah

Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, known as Sher-e-Kashmir‘ (the Lion ofKashmir) was one of the most important political figures in the modern history ofKashmir, Sheikh Abdullah was a charismatic leader, and had the following of ahuge majority of Kashmiris. Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad was a leading figure in India‘s strugglefor freedom, apart from being a noted writer, poet and journalist. He edited anUrdu weekly newspapers, named Al-Hilal. Lala Lajpat Rai (1865 – 1928) was a great author and politician, who ischiefly remembered as a leader in the Indian fight for freedom from the BritishRaj. He was popularly known as Punjab Kesari (The Caesar of Punjab). He wasalso the founder of Punjab National bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company. Bornin Monga district of Punjab, on 28th January, in 1865, Lajpat rai created a careerof reforming Indian polity through politics and writing. Later, Lala Lajpat Rai’sinvolvement became imperative to the Indian Independence Movement. His actionsin anti-imperialist movements led to numerous arrests. He became an importantmember of the Arya Samaj. Lala Lajpat Rai led political rallies. He presided overthe first session of the All India Trade Union Congress in 1920. In 1923, hebecame a member of the Imperial Legislative Assembly. Lajpat Rai engaged heavilyin direct action and protest against British rule. He was repeatedly arrested. Hewas not only a good orator but also a prolific and versatile writer. In 1928, LajpatRai led a procession to demonstrate against the Simon Commission. Great martyr, Bhagat Singh was one of the most prominent faces ofIndian freedom struggle. He was a revolutionary, ahead of his times. Motilal Nehru was an early Indian Freedom fighter and great leader ofthe Indian National Congress. Govind Ballabh Pant was a great freedom fighter, an important politi-cal leader from Uttar Pradesh and a forerunner in the movement to establishHindi as the national language of India. He began his career, as a lawyer inKashipur (now in Uttarakhand). In 1921, he entered politics and was elected tothe Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces. Bipin Chandra Pal was a noted  politician,  journalist and an eminentorator. He had a remarkable literary competence and studied various booksextensively. Among the earliest of Indian politicians in the pre-independenceera, Surendranath Banerjee, at a very young age, cleared the British institutedICs examination, but was later dismissed, due to racial discrimination. He whippedup a strong protest against it. He was intensely swayed by liberal and progressivethinking. After graduating from the University of Calcutta, Surendranath travelledto England. During his stay in England, Banerjee acquainted himself with theworks of Edmund Burke and other liberal philosophers. Upon returning to India,he started working as a professor of English at the Metropolitan Institution, theFree Church Institution and Ripon College. Netaji, Subhash Chandra Bose (born January 23, 1897) was a leaderin the Indian independence movement. Bose was elected president of the IndianNational Congress for two consecutive terms, but had to resign from the post,following ideological conflicts with Mahatma Gandhi and after openly attackingthe Congress’ foreign and internal policies. He established a separate politicalparty, the All India Forward Bloc and continued to call for the full and immediateindependence of India from British rule. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is considered as one of the pillars of Bengalrenaissance. He managed to continue the reforms movement that was started byRaja Rammohan Roy. An important personality in Bengal, during the time of the noncooperationmovement, Deshbandhu Chitranjan Das started the boycott of British and otherwestern dresses. He was elected the mayor of Calcutta Corporation and also becamePresident of Congress. A lawyer by profession, he went on to play a very importantrole in Indian struggle for independence. He acquired his higher education fromEngland. His career in law kicked off, when he successfully defended AurobindoGhosh in the Alipore bomb blast case. He set an example for others in adoptingthe handmade desi khadi garments. He later set up the Swarj Party to propagatehis non-moderate views with Motilal Nehru. He also launched a newspaper, named‘Forward‘ to spread his message to the public and fight the British Raj, but laterrechristened it as ‘Liberty‘. Deshbandhu was continuously ill, throughout hispolitical life. But despite this, he showed spunk and unwavering determination inopposing the foreign rule. Chitranjan Das advocated the adherence to constitutionalways in order to attain independence for India. He preached communal concordand supported the cause of national education. Subhas Chandra Bose was hisstaunch follower. Fondly, Das was called Deshbandhu (the friend of the country).

Jayaprakash Narayan, widely known as JP, was a great freedom fighterand political leader. He was one of the few leaders of modern India, who foughtfor its independence and took part in active politics for a long time, after it becomesindependence. He did his higher studies in United States. After returning to India,JP joined Indian National Congress on the invitation of Jawaharlal Nehru in1929. Mahatma Gandhi was his mentor in Congress. Great philosopher and statesman, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan wasthe first Vice-President of India and also went on to be the second President ofIndia. One of India’s most influential scholars of comparative religion andphilosophy, Radhakrishnan is considered through his efforts to have built a bridgebetween East and West by having shown that the philosophical system of eachtradition is comprehensible within the terms of the other. He wrote authoritativeexegeses of India’s religious and philosophical literature for the English speakingworld. Among many honours, he received were a knighthood (1931) and the BharatRatna (1954). Radhakrishnan wrote his thesis for the M.A. degree on: “The Ethicsof the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions”. The M.A. thesis waspublished, when he was only 20. Later, he wrote many an acclaimed book onphilosophy, both eastern and western. His birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s Dayon 5th September, every year.

Kumaraswamy Kamaraj better known as K. Kamaraj was an Indianpolitician from Tamil Nadu, widely acknowledge as the Kingmaker in Indianpolitics, during the 1960s. He was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and later aMember of Parliament. He was known for his simplicity and integrity. He wasinvolved in the Indian independence movement. As president of the IndianNational Congress, he was instrumental in bringing to power two Nadu, his homestate, he is still remembered for bringing school education to millions of the ruralpoor by introducing free educational and the free Midday Meal Scheme, duringhis tenure as Chief Minister. He was awarded India‘s highest civilian honour, theBharat Ratna, posthumously.

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, (7th November 1888 – 21st

November 1970) was a great physicist and Nobel laureate in Physics, recognizedfor his work on the molecular scattering of light and for the discovery of theRaman effect, which is named after him. Venkataraman was born atThiruvanaikaval, near Trichinopoly, Madras Presidency. He gained his M.A.,obtaining the highest distinctions. In 1934 Raman became the director of theIndian Institute of Science in Bangalore, where two years later he continued as aProfessor of Physics. Other investigations carried out by Raman were experimentaland theoretical studies on the diffraction of light by acoustic waves of ultrasonicand hypersonic frequencies and those on the effects produced by X-rays on infraredvibrations in crystals exposed to ordinary light. In 1947, he was appointed as thefirst National Professor by the new government of Independent India. Ramanretired from the Indian Institute of Science in 1948 and established the RamanResearch Institute in Bangalore, Karnataka, a year later. Great statesman and thinker, Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari, morepopular as Rajaji, was a well known lawyer, writer and politician. He was electedthe second governor-general of India after independence and following this, Rajajiwas made the chief minister of the Indian state of Madras. His interest in politicsstarted at the inception of 1900s. After Mahatma Gandhi returned from SouthAfrica in 1919, Rajaji made up his mind to follow him. The first Indian woman to become the President of the Indian NationalCongress and the first woman to become the governor of a state in India, SarojiniNaidu was a distinguished poet, renowned freedom fighter and one of the greatorators of her time. She was famously known as Bharatiya Kokila (Nightingaleof India). She was proficient n Urdu, Telugu, English, Bangla and Persian. President of Theosophical Society of India; founder of Home Rule League,a pleader of self-rule in India and the first woman president of Indian NationalCongress, Annie Besant was a social reformer, political leader, women’s rightsactivist, writer and orator.
