The Habib Bank Ltd is a leader in Pakistan's services industry. An

extensive network of 1425 domestic branches – the largest in

Pakistan and 55 international branches has enabled HBL to provide

comprehensive services that meet customer needs. This has ensured

thriving client relationships that form the backbone of the Bank's

operation.

• Today, HBL plays a central role in Pakistan's financial and economic development. It has come a long way from its modest beginnings in Mumbai on August 25, 1941 when it commenced operations with a fixed capital of 25,000 rupees.

• Quaid-E-Azam was 1st account holder.

Habib Bank has been a pioneer in providing innovative banking

services. These have included the installation of the first mainframe

computer in Pakistan followed by the first ATM and more recently,

internet banking facilities in almost 1425 domestic branches.

The Bank's towering presence in Pakistan's financial and commercial

life has remained unchanged over the decades. The strength of its

brand and image is symbolized by its prominent Head Office

building that has dominated Karachi's skyline for 35 Years.

Nationalization & Privatization

Nationalization of Bank Nationalization means transfer of any property or institution from the private to the ownership of state. It is defined as: “Nationalization is the process of bringing the assets of a company into the ownership of the state”

HBL was Nationalized in 1974 and it continue to Dominate the Commercial banking sector.

Privatization of Banks Privatization is the process of involving private sector in the ownership state owned enterprises. It is defined as: “Privatization is the denationalization of an industry, transferring from public to private ownership”

On February 26, 2003, Management control was handed over to Agha Khan Foundation, for buying the bulk of the shares.

DEPARTMENTS of HBL. Cash Department The cash department is the

most important department of the bank, it receives cash from the customer and then deposit it into the accounts of the customer and maintain their balances.

Bills and Remittances Department The main funtions of this department is to deal in following:

1.Outward bills for collection(OBC) 2.Inwards bills for collection(IBC)

Foreign Exchange Department The main function of this department is to facilitate the imports and exports by opening up of letter of credit the banks provide.

Credit Department The function of credit department is to lend money in the form of clean advances against promissory notes, as well as secured advances against tangible and marketable securities. The bankers prefer such securities that do not run the risk of general depreciation due to market fluctuations

profitability is also a threat to HBL e.g. UBL, Alfalfa, MCB etc.

For the 2 to 3 years, Pakistan is facing economic and political instability which is a big threat.

Foreign banks are flourishing in field of consumer financing.

Afghan war and terrorisms has an effect on the economy of Pakistan.

Increased regulations from state bank of Pakistan may affect its business.

Recommendations: Fresh graduates must be recruited, as

the combination of experience and fresh can produce better result and it will improve the efficiency of management

Banks different scheme must be convey to the targeted customers so that to have a reasonable share in market.

Mismanagement of resources must be avoided as much as possible as a decrease profit but discourage hard workers and honest employees.

Conclusions : HBL is clearly the first choice of

everyone who believes in qualitative approach of banking an environment of highly responsible people. Bank is enjoying a healthy market share and taste of good status in terms of its operative features support.

HBL is clearly the best bank operating in Pakistan. Corporate and commercial functions are distinguished features of HBL experiencing a good reputation and reasonable mark up with respect to prevailing market mark up with assurance of satisfaction and support. HBL has more customers as compare to other banks, if they given proper attention to every customer then in few years it will be the leading bank of the country.
