Small Blended Learning Survey of Hawkes Bay Schools

Small Blended Learning Survey of Hawke's Bay SchoolsA small snap shot of how ICT is used to assist learning in Primary Schools.

General Information about SurveySurvey was completed by lead staff member in 13 Contributing schools in the greater Hastings and Napier.Survey is only a snapshot of that particularly time and needs to be read bearing in mind that the information could change on a daily basis.Information was not collected from which to measure different schools against each other but rather as a snapshoot of what was happening in the classrooms. This survey was only taken from a small sample of schools. The purpose of the survey was to measure the implied use of ICT in the classrooms and the stumbling blocks to the uses in the classrooms.

Basic Data

There was only thirteen schools surveyed and the range of deciles ratings was spread. School size was another variable to be considered. Once again a variety of sizes was sort.

Types of Equipment Participants were surveyed about the types of equipment they had available in their schools for use in blended teaching. The graph shows that the middle decile schools have less equipment available to the teacher and students than the low or high decile schools.

Computers in classrooms compared with suites and pods/cows

It is obvious that some schools are investing heavily in computers in a variety of ways. The schools with only computers in the classroom where the smaller schools.

Teachers negative feelings towards e-learning and ICT.

Many of the lead teachers when asked this question commented on the reasons for the negativity. Only one school stated that it was really a problem in their school and affected the purchase and use of the equipment.

Teachers negative feelings towards e-learning and ICT.

How often was the equipment available for teaching only used as a tool.

This question in the survey had surprising results in that the a large number of teachers are still only using the available equipment as a tool for task boards and rote learning activities.

Types of activities in Y1-Y3 classes

The results of this question show that there was not much variety being used at the lower level of primary school. Surprisingly there were no e-portfolios being created.

Some concluding thoughts that need further investigation and discussionMost schools have the basic equipment but this is not necessarily being used adequatelyThere is still a proportion of teachers who for a number of reasons are resistant to teaching and using ICT in primary schoolsMiddle decile schools seem to have less access to hardware. Why?Schools are still unsure as to which is the best use of computers through the suite, classroom or pods/cowsJunior classrooms at primary schools use their computers to publish or with for games. Only a few are using them for other activities
