Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Greetings to you in the name of our

wonderful Lord and Savior, Jesus. MayHis blessings of love and grace be withyou and yours.

It has really been great to be back inthe States, to see loved ones again, and tohave fellowship with the wonderfulChristian people who are a part of the"team" that are behind us in our workwith the Chinese people. If we haven'talready visited you, we will be in the nearfuture.

After spending a week and a half withmy folks, we came back to the Midwest.During Thanksgiving week, we attendedthe National Missionary Convention inOklahoma City. I spoke at one of thesessions on the subject "Home Meetingsin Taiwan." It was a great convention, even though the attendance wassomewhat down from last year. It waswonderful to see so many missionaries inone place. There were about 200missionaries who attended, almost 10percent of our missionaries. The sessionswere informative, helpful, and inspiring.Spiritual food like this is really ablessing. You really don't realize howgood it is until after you have beendeprived of it for awhile.

After leaving the convention, westopped at Cookson Hills Christian Schooland Boys Ranch in Kansas, Oklahoma, and visited with some good Christianfriends, Joe and Awyne Thurstenson,Alan and Mary Helen Crider, the Black-wells, and Mom and Pop Hallum. Westayed for a few days and then went on toVirginia's home in Charleston, Illinois, for the month of December.

On December 2, I returned to RoUa tospeak at my home church. FirstChristian, on their Faith Promise Day.They are our sponsoring church and theyhave been very faithful in their supportand guidance. Thank God! I spoke in themorning service and Don Johnson, missionary to Ethiopia, spoke in theevening service. A total of $26,734 waspromised for missions in the comingyear. We praise God for this !

While at Virginia's home, we spoke ather home church, Bushton ChristianChurch, and reported to them of thework. Bushton has also been very faithfulin their support. While we were on thefield, their giving continued to increaseperiodically. Again, we praise God forHis wonderful love and watch carethrough His people!

We prayed for a white Christmas inDecember so the kids could see snow andthe Lord answered our prayer. And, likeHe does so many times, He answered it sothat our cup was overflowing. We hadVlVi inches of snow at one time and thenseveral inches of snow off and on afterthat.

The last of December we went to visitVirginia's second brother and his familyand speak to the church where they attend, the Christian Church in Morris,Illinois. We attended the adult class partyon Saturday night, spoke in all four services on Sunday, and had devotions forthe Young People's New Year's Eveparty. This gave us a good opportunity togot to know the wonderful folk there.

Soon after that we returned to RoUa,where we will be living until we go backto Taiwan in August or September. Danand Mary Pittman and my aunt and

uncle, Marvin and Dorothy Breuer, had ahouse all waiting for us, fully furnished. We are very thankful to them for findingsuch a nice place, but at a reasonableprice. The kids are really happy that wehave a "home of our own" now.

Sunday evening, January 6, I spoke atanother of our supporting churches, theSt. James Christian Church. I haveseveral relatives in this church, also, so itwas a happy time of reunion andfellowship. One of my cousins, RickMosher, a student at St. Louis ChristianCollege, was there and it was good to seehim and his family. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Hi every body! Well, time just keeps

moving on. In fact, we have just passedthe halfway point of our furlough here inthe States. We will be leaving on August30, the Lord willing, to return to Taiwan. Please continue to pray that the Lord willbless us and we will be able to raise theneeded monthly support by the time wereturn.

On January 20th, we were at the HornetChristian Church, halfway betweenJoplin and Seneca, Missouri. We wereyouth ministers at this country church for2 years while still attending Bible college. It was great to see everyone again andrenew old friendships. We were sorry tohear that Jimmy King, son of David andJean King, had been run over by a carwhile sledding. He was operated on andthe doctor says he'll be ready to go backto school and participate in sports againin the Fall. Praise the Lord!

On the last Wednesday of January wepresented our work at the KansasChristian Church in Kansas, Oklahoma. This is the church where most of thefamilies of Cookson Hills Christian Schooland Boys Ranch attend. One of thebrothers there saw that one of the tires onour car was getting a little bald, so hegraciously gave us a tire that he justhappened to have on hand. It worksgreat!

On February 3rd we traveled toanother of our supporting churches,Youngs Chapel Christian Church inSalem, Illinois. We spent the day with theFeatherlings and the Maylons. Eventhough this church, too, is a countrychurch, there were many new faces. Wewere happy to meet all these new people.

On the 17th, we spent the day at theBoulevard Christian Church, inMuskogee, Oklahoma. This is the churchwhere we were working as youth

Page 6: Hazlewood-Sam-Virginia-1974-Taiwan.pdf

ministers when the Lord called us toTaiwan. The main auditorium hadburned down just before we left. Theynow have a beautiful new building andthe church is really growing. We wereable to visit some more of our goodfriends. I wish we could put into wordsthe wonderful joy that we feel when weare able to fellowship with you all.

Next, I journeyed alone to Talequah,Oklahoma, to speak to the NortheasternChristian Chiu'ch there. I stayed withTom and Barbara Tucker, old schoolmates of ours from Ozark. Tom is thecampus minister of Northeastern StateCollege.

In March I took a long trip down toNorth Carolina. It was in Virginia that Ifirst experienced the gas shortage. It wasthe first time I have had to line up for gas.One place I had to wait in line at twodifferent places. I got within 3 cars ofgetting gas at the first placd when theyran out. I had to go and line up at anothergas station (the only one left open intown).

We had a great Faith Promise Rally atRichlands, North Carolina. The goal was$2,500 and the promises exceeded $2,800.Praise be to God! It was a wonderfulweekend with the good folks there (good'ole southern hospitality). I was especially appreciative of Walter Jacobsonand his wife, who took such good care ofme while I was there.

The rally was over on Sunday morning,so I started home that afternoon andstopped in Reidsville for evening services. I just missed the services at theReidsville Church of Christ, but was ableto worship with a new congregationthere, the Faith Christian Church. Thecongregation has left denominationalismand just wants to follow the "Bible only".They asked me to tell about the work in

Taiwan, which I very happily did. Theyare meeting in an American Legion hallright now, but will be moving into theirnew building in June. We pray God'sblessing upon this new congregation asthey seek to do His will.

On March 10th, we had the privilege oftelling our home church, the FirstChristian Church of RoUa, about the workin Taiwan. This is our sponsoring church, the church that wasresponsible for sending us to Taiwan. Wereally enjoy living here in RoUa andhaving fellowship with old friends andgetting acquainted with new ones. Thechurch here is carrying a substantial partof our support and we thank the Lord forthem, as we do for many of you who alsoshare with us in this ministry.

Please be in special prayer for Shane. His eyes are crossed. The doctor is tryingto correct them with glasses. After 6weeks, if his eyes have not improved, then he wiU have to have surgery. Wehope and pray that this will not benecessary. We want to thank the Lord forhealing my Aunt Dorothy, DorothyBreuer, here in Rolla. She had brainsurgery and a tumor was removed. It wasfirst thought to be unfavorable, but laterdiagnosis proved it to be benign. PraiseGod! We ask for your prayers that shewill have a speedy and, most important, acomplete recovery. Her left arm and legwere paralyzed at first, but now she hasalmost complete control of the arm andbeginning to feel movement in her leg.We thank God for this.

Well, must go again for now. We wouldappreciate hearing from you all. Sit downand jot us a line or two. We love you all.May God bless you and yours is ourprayer.

Love in Jesus,Sam, Virginia, Shane, Misty and Tad

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Hi! We hope and pray that the Lord has

been blessing you very much. Remember, He blesses us according to our faithin Him.

Time has slipped away. By the timeyou receive this, we will have about 5 or 6weeks left here in the States. We areplanning to leave on August 30, if ourvisas come through in time. We wouldappreciate your prayers concerning this.

We would also like to ask you to prayfor our finances. At the present time, wehave about $800 a month regular support. There are others who givespasmodically, but we can pretty wellcount on the supporters who are giving$800. The rest of the money we receiveeach month has been special offerings. Sowe are still in need of $450 of monthlysupport. The raising of monthly supporthas been slow. I think part of the problemlies in the fact that most churches havealready made their commitments to abudget before January, when we began tomake a real effort to raise our support.

This happened when we first raisedsupport to go to Taiwan. We went toTaiwan thinking we had enough support, but didn't. But the Lord continued to blessus and some of the churches placed us intheir new budgets the following year Oursupport began to rise until it reached thepoint where it met our needs. We beiievethat this may be God's way of workingwith us this time. We hope and pray thatif you are not now doing so, that you willbegin sharing with us in this ministry.

Also, at the end of this newsletter I willitemize the current needs we have as weprepare to return. Our total need is$3,500. We now have $750 of that, leavingus with the need of $2,750. We are hopingto get our visas back about August 1st. Atthat time we will need our plane farefrom San Francisco to Taipei, which willbe between $1,200 and $1,650, dependingon whether we can get on a charter flightof the Asian American Recreation Clubor not. Except for plane fare and $400 forteaching materials to take back with us,the remainder of the money will not be

Page 10: Hazlewood-Sam-Virginia-1974-Taiwan.pdf

needed until we leave on August 30.Because of the tremendous inflation

going on in Taiwan, we thought it best notto try to get a car and some other itemswe had planned to get. Gasoline has gonefrom 66c to $1.22 a gallon. So we feel thatit would be best for me to continue to use

the motorcycle for normal business andthen use a taxi when the whole familygoes together. I believe it would be muchcheaper than owning a car.

Many of you are reading our newsletterfor the first time. Over 100 families, churches, and individuals have beenadded to our mailing list since our lastnewsletter was put out in April. We wouldlike to welcome you and thank those ofyou who have joined with us in the workof taking Jesus to the Chinese people inTaiwan. If you have any questions concerning the work, please feel free to writeus and let us know about it. Our address

from now until we leave is in care ofMary Dorothy Franklin, Route 3,Charleston, Illinois, 61920. We pray God'srichest blessings on you.

Many things have gone on since we lastwrote you. We took a trip to Californiawhere we spent a week with my folks andattended the Institute of Youth Conflictsin Long Beach. We would like torecommend this conference to everyone, especially those of you who are workingwith young people or who have childrenof your own. It was really helpful to us inmany ways and will be even more helpfulto us as we work with the young people ofTaiwan.

We spoke to several churches on theway out and back. The last week in Maywe began working in Vacation BibleSchools. Our first VBS was in Cache,Oklahoma. The next week we worked in 2

VBS's, First Christian in Seneca in themorning, and Hornet Christian Church in

the evening. The following week wehelped in the second week of the VBS atour home church. First Christian inRolla, Mo. We appreciated the opportunity of teaching these young peopleabout the customs, religions, and thework of God in Taiwan. We want to thank

all of these kids for sharing with us oftheir money.

The third week in June I was privilegedto be the missionary speaker at CyokamoCamp, near Joplin, Mo. I have 3 morecamps planned in the near future; one atGasconade Camp near Waynesville, Mo.,

October 1974

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,Hi! Well, we made it, praise the Lord.

We arrived on Saturday, September 7,and had several of our Christian friendsat the airport to greet us. It sure is good tobe back in Taiwan again.

We spent the last two weeks in theStates with my folks in Visalia,California. We had planned to leave onAugust 30th, but the charter flight that wewere planning to take was full up by thetime we had received enough money forour plane tickets. So we had to takeanother flight to Hong Kong and then onto Taipei. But it was cheaper that way, sowe were happy to spend that extra weekwith Grandma and Grandpa Hazlewood.

On our way to California fromMissouri, somehow our passports withthe Taiwan Visas stamped in them weremisplaced. We were really concernedabout that because losing 3 passports isno casual thing. So I had to go to SanFrancisco to see about getting new ones. With the Lord's help we were able to getnew passports in one day and the visas inanother day.

On Thursday, September 5, my parentsdrove us up to Oakland to see us off. Myaunt and uncle, George and AlphaBarber, who live in Sunnyvale, were alsothere. We all ate dinner together and thenwe said good-bye. We left Oakland about10:00 p.m. and stopped in Seattle andFairbanks for about an hour or so in eachplace before going on to Hong Kong onSaturday morning at 8:00 a.m. (we lostFriday when we flew over the International Dateline). After switchingfrom Trans Inter-national Airlines toSingapore Airlines, we flew from HongKong to Taipei, arriving at 4:30 p.m.

It sure was good to see everyone again. The Bemo and Skiles families werethere, along with Mrs. Dittemore, MeiHwa, Julia and Mark (who are now Mr.and Mrs.). Others had been there theweek before when we had planned toarrive with Sue Rhodes. We were sorry tohave missed them, but will be seeingthem later on as we begin our work.

We had been told by others how priceshad gone up after we left, but it was stillsurprising to us when we got back. Rent

Page 14: Hazlewood-Sam-Virginia-1974-Taiwan.pdf

is so high (it doubled in the area we wereliving) that we decided to look forsomething outside of Taipei City. Wehave looked at several houses from 8 to 12miles from downtown Taipei and theprice range is between $75 and $100.

Right now I am looking for someone tohelp me to continue in my study ofChinese, especially in the realm ofteaching the Bible. Alan Bemo and twoChinese brethern, Joseph and ThomasLwo, have started a Bible Institute. Assoon as I can find a Chinese co-workerand get a little bit of study in, I hope to behelping in this.

We were able to get Shane in Kindergarten at the Bethany ChristianSchool in Taipei. He has adjusted realwell there and only missed the first weekof school. More about that in the next

issue.

Not too much news this time. Pleasecontinue to remember us in your prayers, especially in the realm of readjusting tolife here in Taiwan. We didn't do to good ajob of readjusting to life in the States.Thank you for your prayers. Several haveasked about our support. We are stillshort of our projected budget. With inflation set in (as it is in the States), wewill have to live here awhile to really beable to determine our needs, but this we

know. God will provide for our needs, whatever they may be! Blessed be ourLord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May allhonor and praise be to Him is our prayer.

December 1974

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Jesus,Hi! We hope and pray that this letter

finds you and yours well and happy inserving Jesus!

Well, the devil is sure getting his licksin (and I don't mean this light-heartedly).He knows we're back to stay and he isdoing everything possible to discourageus. We like to never found a place to livein the first place. But after living with 2different Christian families for almost amonth, we foimd a place in Tien Mou,about 6 or 7 miles from downtown (abouta half hour's drive).

When we got everything out of storage,we found that the stove and dryer wouldnot work. So we had to eat sandwiches

and use a hot plate to cook on for about aweek. We also had to take our washingover to the Wesley Bell's house (aChristian family we lived with for 2weeks) to dry during that same time. After the stove and dryer were fixed, thenour water pump went out. It took 5 days toget it fixed. During that time, all waterhad to be carried to fill up the washer.

take a bath, and fill up the stools.Numerous other small things happenedalong with re-adjustment to Taiwan sothat it seemed like we were spendingmost of our time living and spending verylittle time doing what we came here todo—spreading God's Word. We were sodiscouraged that we wondered if it wasreally God's will for us to come back afterall (Satan has a way of doing that, doesn'the?). But out of this experience, it hasreally helped us to grow in our respect forthose missionaries who live in areaswhere they do not have the things wehave. We need to remember missionarieseverywhere, especially those that we areclosely associated with, in our prayers aswell as our giving.

After we got half-way settled in ourhome, I began to look for a place to set upour office and begin studying again andhaving English Bible classes. I looked forover a week without success, so we havetemporarily set up shop near AlanBemo's in a basement room. We will stillbe there another few weeks. Hopefully,

we will find something permanent soon.I am very happy to have Joseph Chen,

one of Alan's students, and one of thefaithful members who attends the churchin Alan's home, to come and help me.Right now he is teaching me NewTestament Stories (a textbook of TaipeiLanguage Institute) along with theChinese Bible. In the future I hope tostudy one of the courses being taught inthe Bible Institute so that I will perhapsbe able to help teach in this Institute.

We had the privilege of being inviteddown to Lo Tung, where we used to holdhome meetings every Friday eveningbefore we returned to the States. This is

the place, you will remember, where wemet in the home of Brother Chen. Ted

Skiles and his family are now in that areaand have started an orphanage. He hasalso continued to have a home meetingeach week at the Chen's. We were invited

for supper. Afterwards, Ted and BeverlySkiles, Sue Rhodes, and I sang somespecial songs for them. Then I said a fewwords to the brethren, after which Tedpreached a sermon using flannelgraph. The brethren are growing in the Lord andwe praise Him for this. Next month weplan to spend Thanksgiving with theSkiles' and I plan to teach this time. Please pray for me that I will be able tostudy well and get back in the groove ofteaching and preaching in Chinese. Also, please pray for Sister Chen as she still ishaving problems with her stomach. Herhusband had half of his stomach taken

out in an operation about 2 years ago. Shenow has to go every day to the hospitalnear her home for shots and medicine.

They are very poor and cannot affordthat too long. But, praise the Lord, thechurch that meets in Alan's home took upan offering for their family and it willhelp them a lot.

Ted says that the new orphanage willbe completed just as soon as it quitsraining (it has rained in the area for 5solid weeks). The contractor said 3 or 4nice days and they can finish up. If any ofyou are interested in this orphanagework, just write Ted Skiles, P. 0. Box 9,Lo Tung, Taiwan, 265.

That's all for now. May the Lordcontinue to be with you and yours as weall live for Jesus where we are.Remember, "So then, submit yourselvesto God. Resist the Devil, and he wiU runaway from you. Come near to God, and hewill come near to you." (James 4:7,8).
